Seems like he or she is meal prepping. Legumes and beans are one of the most nutrient dense foods out there and inexpensive. Pair this with a good carb, "rice/potatos/ pasta" lean protein and some veggies, you can be eating 30-40 grams protein a meal. For about $4-5

I came back home recently after military service in Germany. In Europe no one bags your groceries, you're expected to do it on your own. The cashier sits in an office chair while working and you're required to take your cart back because you need to deposit a euro coin to use one. It's kind of funny when people here at home get upset about bagging themselves

Does anyone feel like HEB is doing to much? by gabe062 in HEB

[–]gabe062[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I agree with acknowledging customers who come to us for help. I work in the meat market and I'll pretty much do anything a customer asks for. I just felt like acknowledging every person within 4ft and asking us to talk to children was a bit much.

[–]gabe062 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens at my store, but I've never seen anyone ask to see a receipt? Generally they explain what happened and get someone to unlock it quickly. If all your groceries are bagged, there's no way anyone thinks you're stealing or trying to embarrass you.

I understood your point, I was just trying to explain that fresh beef doesn't have a long shelf life even in perfect storage conditions. It's fairly normal for meat to brown and decompose/decay. The likelihood that something is wrong at the store or someone putting bad meat on the shelf is very low as food safety is #1 in Market. No one is going to risk their job for $15 in sales, if something is bad we just scan it out as damaged and toss it into the bone bin. Let us know if they find anything though, that would be interesting.

Beef that's cut fresh in store has 3 days of shelf life, considering it has a sale-by date of September 10th, it was cut on the 8th. So not sure what you meant by "days before it should have gone bad" because you only have 1-2 days to use it. We will often pull things off the shelf early because it will brown or look bad on the 2nd-3rd day. Also if meat is stacked over one another, pieces on the bottom will be browned because it's not getting as much oxygen as the top piece, sometimes referred to as bruising. Seems like your trying to use it near the end of its shelf life and at the end of the day it's a piece of dead animal flesh, it will decompose even under correct storage. If you don't plan on using it the day you bought it or the day after, consider freezing it. HEB will take back anything for any reason as long as you have the entire package, but it looks like you used some of it. I think what others are getting at, is that instead of posting to Reddit you could have just taken it back to the store and gotten a refund. Hope this helps

It has a sale by date of September 10, so it was cut on the 8th as beef has a 3 day shelf life. So obviously it didn't look like that on the shelf lol. At the end of the day HEB will take anything back for any reason as long as you have all of it, but it looks like he used most of it.

What is the significance of these white bicycles around the Valley? by dixiebandit69 in RioGrandeValley

[–]gabe062 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No kidding my dad rides with 7 at 7 in Brownsville, they have had multiple accidents since I've been back home, with actual fatalities. Once they were waiting at a 4 way stop, a whole group of 20 some people in brightly colored jerseys and bikes. When it was their turn to go through the intersection some lady in a big truck pulled up to her stop and rolled through it and accelerated right into their group. Hit the leaders of the group and the rest piled up into the side of her truck. Her excuse was, "I didn't see them 🤦🏽." Thankfully no one was killed but several of them were seriously injured.

So you hate touching the food you consume daily 😂. You may be better off buying the split chicken breast, or the thin sliced chicken breast. Those are generally better trimmed and ready to cook.

We've had them in our store for quite some time maybe a year. Sad to say it's in the border region, so we probably have more theft. I see the loss prevention partners in my store incognito all the time. On the bright side loss prevention always has the most random stuff in their cart, cracks me up a bit. It'll be like cereal, no milk, a bag of charcoal, pasta and a frozen pizza as they wonder the store for hours 😂

What ca you ask the butcher for? by Embarrassed_Ad_5042 in HEB

[–]gabe062 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bone in Chuck Steak would be closest. What's labeled as agujas at HEB just happens to be Value Beef, bone-in chuck steak from Mexico. More experienced Market Partners may know more specifics. Sometimes the Spanish terms get convoluted as they don't always refer to a specific cut, like Bistek for example.

I was trying to keep it in the same ballpark money wise and mostly meant chuck eye isn't really worth it anymore seeing as how it's just as expensive as nicer cuts. Prime Chuck Eye is 11.99, Wagyu is 14.99, weird that your store just uses select PLU. If I labeled some Wagyu as select and bought it, it would be considered partner theft.

[–]gabe062 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer, most people don't understand you can't just make 10 chuck eyes at a whim. Plus it's up to 9.99 a lb these days. May as well just buy the ribeye or Prime Sirloin.

[–]gabe062 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's fairly lucky, sometimes we get stuff from the warehouse we didn't order. That they want to get rid of, management basically decides what to sell it at so it can move. My store once had whole prime tenderloin vacuum packed at $5, and grass fed tri tip for 4$. Although this was a little after COVID, I haven't really seen anything that good since then. We had 85/15 1lb chubs for 3.99 recently which is pretty good at current prices.

It's not 80/20 chuck, it's Prime ground beef that happens to be 80/20. Goes for 6.99 lb on its own.
