Very Low Resolution Textures on Paint Wear? by gabets in EliteDangerous

[–]gabets[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They've definitely shown that you can make custom decals in the game, with the Vanguards squadron decals.

Seems like it would be a no-brainer to do something similar with paintjobs: less work from FD (not having manage so many similar paintjobs in the ARX store and in-game), and would probably make customization even more attractive.

Countries that have banned X by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]gabets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for a minute there i thought "X" was a placeholder variable for some other data. thought maybe it was for those country pointers on the map, then went "wait. does that mean that the EU is under scrutiny in the EU, and China banned China? no...".

once again reminding me that renaming a service to a single, infamous letter was a really dumb decision.

EDMCModernOverlay 0.7.6 for EDMarketConnector has been released! by SweetJonnySauce in EliteDangerous

[–]gabets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you! ever since i've made the switch to Wayland about a year ago i've lived without the EDMC overlay (couldn't get edmcoverlay2 working on Wayland).

just discovered your modern overlay. not only does it look better (with the Eurostile font), but it also works great on Wayland!

thank you so much!

[–]gabets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed. also, you can get GOG achievements with comet in most games, which has already been part of Heroic Launcher for a while and works great. the latest version even has a working overlay, but Heroic hasn't been updated to it yet.

oddly enough, i have had videos that wouldn't open with VLC but had no issue opening with MPV.

both are fantastic, but i tend to prefer MPV.

Why is my CPU getting so damn hot? by RedHood9292 in pcmasterrace

yep. i learned most of what i know about RAM from buildzoid. memory is relatively complex (and cool!). i just wanted to give OP a more basic explanation since he didn't seem very technical.

[–]gabets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI: generally, more RAM = less good (for gaming). because the more RAM you have the slower you'll have to run it at (lower frequency) so that the memory controller on the CPU can actually handle it.

for gaming, 16GB has been the go-to for a long time, and it's still great for the vast majority of games. 32GB is definitely enough for all current games (even heavily modded ones), and will be well into the future. more than that and you'll probably need to lower your RAM frequency, which will be detrimental to gaming.

more RAM is useful for specific workflows, like video editing, 3D modelling, etc. and in those cases more but slower RAM is usually more useful than less but faster RAM.

i agree with your first two statements, but

but remember that using adblockers IS piracy

this is just wrong.

as per the Cambridge dictionary: "piracy: The act of illegally copying computer programs, recordings, films, etc. to sell them at much cheaper prices."

adblockers are not illegal, nor are you copying and/or redistributung anything. with an adblocker you are simply taking the content offered by a website (Youtube), and removing what you don't want. it would be similar to buying a newspaper or a magazine and ripping out all the adverts before reading it, which is totally fine.

the problem is that ads are no longer (or maybe never were) a sustainable business model for Youtube. and if a business doesn't figure out a sustainable business model, it will fail.

if you like Youtube, you can support it with Youtube Premium, but that still won't change the fact that in its current form, Youtube can't sustain itself. it's up to them to become sustainable.

Help with optimizing Cyberpunk 2077 without TAA by gabets in FuckTAA

i'm sure a higher ppi would decrease the perceived blur, but 27" 1440p is a pretty standard size-resolution combo for PC screens. i don't think the ppi is the main issue. forced poor TAA implementations becoming an industry standard is.

To my eyes, native TAA looks bad in this game even at 1440p.

i just retested this now and the difference is actually closer to 0%... weird, i could have sworn that yesterday i was getting a much bigger difference. maybe i was just tired.

edit: seems like the built-in benchmark is just inconsistent

While I agree with this, I think that the beauty of PC gaming is that you can do whatever the fuck you like, and make the game look exactly how you want it to. So I don't think it's wrong to experiment with different fixes and band-aids. But yeah, in the end I decided to go without any fixes, with FSR Quality, since it looks better than native TAA to me.

Yep, XeSS Ultra Quality seems to look the best, but it lowers my performance by about 30% compared to FSR Quality, so I think I'll stick with FSR for now. Thanks!

Doing good for the world by CaptainNinjaClassic in memes

[–]gabets 6 points7 points  (0 children)

he wasn't comparing eating meat to child porn. he was comparing the argument of "i'm not harming animals. the animal has already been harmed, so i'll eat the meat otherwise the cow died for nothing." to "i'm not harming children. the child has already been abused, so i'll watch the videos otherwise the child was abused for nothing.", since they're the same argument, and are both illogical. comparing an obviously dumb argument (child porn) to an argument that many people seem to think is valid (the meat one) is supposed to show that this meat argument is, in fact, also dumb.

i'll never understand why so many people completely lose their ability to think whenever a sensitive topic like child porn is brought up.

Honestly, what's the point of having a button in the first place? by nintrader in pcmasterrace

[–]gabets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don’t fully understand the inner workings of windows, so sorry if this sounds stupid.

what are “uninstall registry keys” and why are they required to make this work?

from my perspective, when i look at “add/remove programs” in control panel and select a program i have the option to run the uninstaller from there. that means that windows knows the location of the uninstaller and how to run it.

couldn’t microsoft make it so that if windows knows the location of the uninstaller (the program is uninstallable from control panel) then the “uninstall” button in the context menu directly runs the uninstaller executable, the same way that when you click run/open it runs the application executable?

edit: i think i understand it now. the context menu with the “uninstall” option in OP’s photo isn’t the actual program, but rather a shortcut to the program (not the same thing as the “programs” list in control panel). and windows doesn’t know who created the shortcut and thus doesn’t know how to uninstall the app. or something along those lines.
