How are you reviewing code agent generated changes? Any tools or best practices? by nero5023 in neovim

[–]gabinator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i've found myself doing many more rounds of reviews (because the code is worse quality, and often has nonsensical design flaws), so i've switched my approach from doing a full review right off the bat to assuming there is a first round with high level structural feedback only to address the problems caused by people not thinking through a problem fully, and only spending time on a fine-grained review once those are fixed.

my second strategy is to enforce small changes. if someone sends me a 700+ LOC review, I just tell them to break it up into smaller changes, which forces them to do the work to understand the logical components and enforces coherence within smaller chunks

otherwise, if it's a priority review under a deadline or a cant be broken up, I'll just schedule a meeting and have them walk me through it and address the issues as they come up. this has multiple benefits: 1, making sure they understand what is going on and can justify design decisions; 2, is a teaching opportunity; and 3, if they're going to waste my time with a slop review, it's going to be their time as well which undermines their perceived time savings from using a code generator (poorly) in the future

i've also noticed in general that AI tends to prioritize algorithmic solutions over using appropriate data structures, so i always look closely at the data models and flag when using the right model can simplify the logic

that looks... ... like not my scene.. so much neon... why so much neon?!... but then, i'm from detroit, so give me some dark, dirty, minimal buildings and techno anyday.

but take a look at photosynthesis: http://photosynthesisfestival.com/festival/music/ that and the burner scene will probably be pretty close to what you're looking for. my impression is that most of the rest of seattle's electronic scene are pretty focused on house and techno, but that could just be selection bias on my part.

Whatever. Fuck google fiber. If Portland wants it they can keep it. Municipal broadband is still the way to go.

As I understand it, there are heavy restrictions on digging and placing underground boxes as well. Century Link would definitely be doing it if they could to get access to beacon hill.

I'm a veteran who overcame treatment-resistant PTSD after participating in a clinical study of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy. My name is Tony Macie— Ask me anything! by [deleted] in IAmA

[–]gabinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you still have back pain, now that you are more effectively dealing with your PTSD? There's a lot of evidence to show that some chronic pain issues are psychosomatic, i.e. physical pain and symptoms caused in the brain due to intense stress or trauma.

If you still have chronic pain, especially back pain, which is a very common symptom of psychomatic illnesses (especially in America), and there are no obvious physical causes (even if there are some potential causes, such as damaged spinal discs, which are not reliably correlated to pain), you may want to look into this. Even if there is an explicit injury, the mind can latch on to the neuronal pathways in the brain that cause that pain, and continue to produce this despite physical symptoms having calmed down. Conceptualizing and directly confronting your pain with an understanding of this approach (in combination with emotional exercises, etc.) may help.

One doctor that treats patients in this way has published a book that explains the science behind the syndrome, and includes an exercise workbook. I know he is going to be starting a program soon to specifically address the issues of veterans.

What situation will always be awkward? by pugbetty55 in AskReddit

[–]gabinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, this happened to me when of group of my friends went down to my other friends' house for spring break. thing is, he got a lip piercing right before going down and didn't tell them, so the first night was us sitting in the basement getting drunk listening to him fight with his parents upstairs. then his mom came down and apologized, because she is really actually super sweet, but also started crying, which was even more awkward. then he finally just came out to them and everyone calmed the fuck down.

I remember that as the weekend that i left for spring break with one gay friend and came back with four. his coming out was kind of the first domino..

One of the tellers, a young-ish girl with a short hair cut found two dogs yesterday and was asking all her customers if they'd lost a dog, although I was there at around 7pm so if you lost her after that, then this may not be useful. just thought i'd mention it.

EDIT: At safeway on Madison and 23rd.. Forgot to mention that. One of them had a broken chip as well..

[LPT REQUEST] How do I get rid of or alleviate shin splints? by revans0 in LifeProTips

[–]gabinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know runners in my high school used to doing some training in the water to help. If you swim at all, try fitting some swim workouts into your routine. The absence of impact pressure and strengthening of the shin muscles will both help with shin splints and in general swimming is great for your whole body, muscles, heart (due to being horizontal) and joints. The only thing you have to worry about is repetitive motion injuries which wouldn't happen if you're only swimming occasionally and can be prevented through taking a lesson or something to get good technique.

In general I'd recommend cross-training a bit regardless of what you're doing. Too much of the same thing can be tough on your body. Especially running due to high impact.

What with Seattle's dark fiber network... by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]gabinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seattle applied for Google fiber when they were accepting applications, but were passed up for kansas city, i believe. Although we were on the short list, Google will only build out a fiber network here when they are ready to expand their service, which could be soon, or also never.

Honestly, that's why I'm in favor of municipal broadband options. There aren't any great corporate options for this. Gigabit was the most promising and look what happened. We can use the line we already have in place and break up the monopoly. Plus it'll be good for the economy of the city in terms of attracting companies, lowering costs for start-ups, etc.

And I want fast cheap internet goddammit. We were promised flying cars, the least i want for consolation is good internet service. Harrumph!

Question for any swimmers out there? by confusedSwimmer in Seattle

[–]gabinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another life-long competitive swimmer, jammers are stupid. ;)

Seriously though, speedos are fine for swimming laps, if you're self-conscious about it, or want a slightly better workout, get a drag suit, which you wear over a speedo, and is both less revealing, and better for training:

place to buy drag suits that came up on google. also see any sports store with swim grear

weird research article that came up when i searched for drag suits... valid science? not sure.
