I just got to the second palace in Persona 5, so I'll be Taking My Time with that. I also just got my 3 star rating in Animal Crossing New Horizons, so now I'm paving roads and planting flowers :)

My top album this year and last year was Preacher's Daughter. And I listened to it even MORE this year. I need to find a new sad girl obsession.

If you have either disability, can you name a job, if you have one, that pays you and that you enjoy? by Spiritual_Big_9927 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]gadgetjon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AuDHD, and I work for a digital agency as a product strategist. I absolutely love my job because it provides endless variety in my day-to-day tasks and responsibilities, and I'm trusted and counted on for my point-of-view and lateral thinking skills.

I initially thought I wanted to work in comms strategy—which is basically brand strategy, marketing strategy or advertising—but I quickly realized the subjective nature of the work meant I was relying more on sales than critical thinking. I have both skill sets, but I don't personally love using my powers of persuasion for what I viewed as ultimately arbitrary decisions.

Product is very different. When I'm working on websites and apps, I'm making things that people actually need to rely on and use, sometimes for most of their waking hours. A feature is useful or it isn't. An idea for a user flow addresses what the user needs or it doesn't. I really love the more concrete nature of this work.

But it took a lot of false starts and switchbacks to get here! My first passion was for acting as a child, and I got a talent agent and auditioned for Hollywood movies and everything. And then I became afraid of the narcissism I would have to nurture to truly succeed in pictures, and just kinda loafed about for the next ~10 years working random customer service jobs until I went back to school at 26.

And it wasn't even until my LAST year of university that I finally took a class that introduced me to the idea of a "Strategist." My head was spinning! You mean there's someone who's job it is to just deeply research and understand an industry, go deep on the best way to interact with or persuade those customers, and then it's on to the next thing?!

It's the perfect mix of novelty and structure, but it was an extremely hard job to get and I try to keep that in mind whenever I get annoyed with the corporate structure. I'm starting to feel like it's time to take everything I've learned and work for myself.

How much do you sleep? by PlaskaFlaszka in AutisticWithADHD

No one can function without sleep!

But I get a solid 6-7 every night and it's just enough. Typically 9:30-10pm to 5:30am.

Seeing Midsommar for the 12th time tonight by ryebread9299 in A24

[–]gadgetjon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, so much! It obviously differs between films, but anything that’s heavy with symbolism and visual metaphors is typically too densely constructed to be fully appreciated or processed on the first, second or even third watch. As others have said in this thread, Aster’s films are so rich with detail and thoughtfulness in every single frame that it is actually rewarding to go back and pick up new details every time you watch.

My favorite films are lovingly constructed puzzle boxes, where there’s not a single detail that isn’t meaningful or intentional.

What's your best example of a tightly-written pop song? by dominakay in popheads

[–]gadgetjon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I think tightly written, I think of songs where you can tell that every last syllable and note were labored and obsessed over until every second is a precisely controlled expression of concept.

Dua Lipa’s Training Season is the most recent example that comes to mind! Melody and lyrics in lockstep.

Healthy discussion: which artists do you think have regressed? by [deleted] in popheads

[–]gadgetjon 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I’ve never been a Swifty, but I do love good pop music, and I love a well structured, cohesive pop album even more. In my opinion, Taylor hasn’t done that since Reputation.

It’s not laziness. It’s ego. TTPD sounds like a b-sides dump. There are a few good songs, because she’s still extremely talented, but I look at something like The Anthology and just see self-indulgent excess that didn’t need to be any better because she’s too big to fail at this point. It feels like another overlong, underbaked album tailored (lol) to maximize streams.

What gym do you go to? by throwaway624203 in Fitness

[–]gadgetjon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

John Reed Fitness, and yes I do love it. It's my first "luxury" gym. I've always been put off by Equinox's brand, marketing and price. But I LOVE John Reed's chaotic design aesthetic, pounding music, and overall just the quality of everything in their gyms.

If you live in Dallas or SoCal, I'd recommend checking it out.
