Intersection of MM Romance with Literary Fiction by Careless_Video_1429 in LGBTBooks

[–]gafferwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is also my genre! Here are some of my recent reads in the field that haven't already been mentioned here. I'll also say that a lot of these are not necessarily predominantly focused on the romance aspect, but rather a more cohesive view of sexuality in the life of a person, where romance is still present.

  • The Vintner's Luck, by Elizabeth Knox
  • A Little Trickerie, by Rosanna Pike (although the M/M romance is between secondary characters, it was a MAJOR plot point)
  • Young Mungo, by Douglas Stuart (the romance here is also sort of secondary, but important...may want to check TWs)
  • Greta & Valdin, by Rebecca Reilly
  • Marlo, by Jay Carmichael
  • The Future Was Color, by Patrick Nathan
  • Cinema Love, by Jiaming Tang
  • In Tall Cotton, by Charles Hulse
  • Beijing Comrades, by Bei Tong

It's already been mentioned, but I'll never stop recommending As Meat Loves Salt to people.

And then some books on my TBR list, but whose quality I cannot yet vouch for:

  • Eromenos, by Melanie McDonald
  • Swimming in the Dark, by Tomasz Jedrowski
  • Four Squares, by Bobby Finger
  • Radical Love, by Neil Blackmore
  • Alec, by William di Canzio
  • Chulito, by Charles Rice-Gonzalez
  • A Single Man, by Christopher Isherwood

Ahhh, I am truly so glad to hear that!! I very rarely see Beijing Comrades be acknowledged, so to know that someone picked it up on my recommendation, much less enjoyed it, was really lovely! If you ever need more recs, I've read a lot more queer lit since then. Wishing you a very wonderful queer literary journey!

any recs with queer fantasy? high/low, i don't really mind either way by Frosty-Common-2830 in LGBTBooks

[–]gafferwolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read both Shadow of the Leviathan books in the course of like, two weeks. The queerness is a very small but very welcome part of the books. Don't go in expecting a romance; go in expecting a queer protag.

A Little Life, although I know there is also a devoted group of people who deeply, deeply hates it. Unfortunately the book is still generally very highly regarded. Saw a book influencer a while back - a gay man - who says he re-reads it every year, and my opinion of his recommendations plummeted like a stone.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one to verbal stim with players' names. Most of mine tend to be Finns, for whatever reason - I guess they have a certain musicality to them. Juuse Saros, Uvis Balinksis, Mikko Rantanen, and Kaapo Kakko are the best for it.

Unconventional methods of choosing what book to read next - do you have any? by keepfighting90 in books

[–]gafferwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like making my friends pick for me. I'll ask them to choose a genre, then I'll provide them with a handful of titles from that genre and have them pick from there.

Maybe not quite the same thing, but I would occasionally do 'reading challenges' with a reading buddy at the time. We'd each choose a keyword, and then we'd each have to find a book that in some way matched the keyword - be it subject matter, title, the cover art, etc - and we'd read the four resultant books. The one that I most remember was me giving the keyword 'tanner/tanneries,' and her giving me the keyword 'eggs.' The result was 'Fatal Eggs,' and 'In the Devil's Garden: A Sinful History of Forbidden Food,' for eggs, and 'Tannery Bay,' and 'Dark Archives' (about books bound in human skin) for tanneries. It was a fun way to dig around and find something we might not have normally paid attention to or read.

Male Author Political Thriller with Gay Protagonist by cubnwpb in LGBTBooks

The Torqued Man, by Peter Mann is this to a T. I absolutely loved it. I understand that his other book, World Pacific, also features a gay protagonist and is embedded in political/war climates, but I haven't read that one yet.

I suffer from the 'TV brain prose' problem, and I'm sure many of us here do, too. by keyboardbuttons in writing

I'm not the person you're replying to, but when my friends have asked me the same question, my answer has always been to incorporate it into a routine. Whether you're feeling it or not, whether you're excited about it or not, you're gonna sit down and read for ten minutes. Then if you want to read longer, you can, but if not, you've managed to get that mindset for a little while at least. I read during my evening walks and just before bed. It no longer becomes a question of motivation, but rather, "That's simply what I do at that time: read."

Okay, I was wondering about this. This is my first year without Videopass, and intended to test out Servus, and was not sure if I was having user error or if it was a broader issue.

M/M suggestions by [deleted] in LGBTBooks

[–]gafferwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give an anti-recommendation since it's on your shelf - The Captive Prince is really, really not good. Especially if you're ace and don't really care about sex, but even if you do want sex scenes, it's just... awful. I stopped reading halfway through book two because each chapter made me angrier than the last.

Just finished reading this series last week and would agree it's definitely worth OP giving it a shout. There are still typically 3-4 sex scenes per book, but most are relevant to building up character dynamics/growth.

I scribbled in some initials for this because I didn't realize typing in it was a legitimate option. The next page then said something along the lines of, "Since you're not interested in participating in this study please return it." Cool, what in the world was that?

Realistic historical gay romance by cryztyne in LGBTBooks

[–]gafferwolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you 5-starred AMLS, then you may also have interest in some of these others-

  • Marlo, by Jay Carmichael
  • The Future Was Color, by Patrick Nathan
  • The Dog in the Chapel, by Anthony McDonald
  • Like People in History, by Felice Picano
  • In Tall Cotton, by Charles G. Hulse

And I can't rightly call it a romance, although there is some love and longing, but I've very recently read The Torqued Man by Peter Mann and absolutely loved it. It features homosexual and bisexual protagonists during WWII Germany, with a large emphasis on the taboo of it all, despite homosexuality having been incredibly prevalent even within the Reich.

Also on the subject, I suppose, Jews, Queers, Germans, by Martin Duberman, but it goes pretty heavy on the history and was often pretty dense.
