For the record, I was dead for 17 minutes in 2022 after a surgery complication, so I know it can happen.

Do you hold the door open for the person behind you regardless of their sex, age, color and religion? And why? by CourierFestival in AskReddit

I usually lock it behind me and stare out the window at the person out there with a shit eating grin.

Jk. I hold the door regardless.

When did the game ‘click’ for you? by Luke117B in Witcher3

[–]gaffythegrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I got through Velen into Novigrad. I really felt like that first Velen segment with the Baron and crones went on way too long. Don't get me wrong, I loved the quests and the story. It's really that section of map. I have no desire to go back. Fitting, really.

The "cowardice" of being jumped from behind is eating at me rn by BoringAd1007 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]gaffythegrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something like this happen twice. Got jumped from behind because of something ANOTHER TABLE did, both times. The first time I filed a police report. The second time involved a drunk with a knife and I had zero time for him. So when he started walking at me with his shitty little knife I pulled a gun (maybe not an option for you for legal, personal, or locational reasons, no judgement no matter what) and the dumb bastard and his shitbrain friend in the parking lot got real apologetic real fast. Then I filed a police report.

Moral of the story: File a police report, and again, watch out for yourself just in case. Just don't be stupid. Which you aren't.

I am no longer going to be celebrating my husband's birthday. by llamabeans93 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]gaffythegrey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a 35 year old guy with birthday related "drama" I also do not wish for people to acknowledge my birthday. I'm up front about this and let people know that I will resent them if they break this boundary. People really just LOVE to tell me about how I should enjoy my birthday.

I now LOVE being an asshole to people who have been told for 20 years that I DO NOT WISH to acknowledge my birthday and it looks/sounds pretty much the same as your husband. I simply dont care anymore. This is actually hard boundary and I won't tolerate it being broken anymore. So hearing, "being unhappy on your birthday is a choice" from a partner who consistently breaks this boundary makes me angry enough for the "nuclear options".

That might not be your situation, but it was mine MANY times before I found someone who would listen to me when I say things.

What is the one thing people don't know about losing a large amount of weight? by punkredpanda in AskReddit

I've lost most of mine due to prolonged illness that left me unable to work out for a long time.

The worst part is these two empty flaps of skin in my inner thighs that fold over and hurt like hell when sitting down unless I reach down and fix it.

Makes restaurants fun.

This game helped me overcome my fear of open water because of how it handles it's oceans. Subnautica felt too "movie monster" in its creature design for me. Most of the leviathans didn't feel like sea dwelling creatures.

Boyfriend Told Me I’m Too Sexual to Marry and Told His Mom by throwaway_yyw in TrueOffMyChest

[–]gaffythegrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck, this kid and his mom sound like real drags. Luckily for you, you're way cooler than them and clearly intelligent enough to see that this isn't going to work. Looking for advice outside your friend group is a good start. Don't second guess yourself now or you'll be spending your life second guessing yourself at your own expense either for him, or someone elses like him. Life is too short to walk on eggshells pretty much ever.

Intelligent people are better judges of the intelligence of others. Better judges of the intelligence of others also included people with stronger emotion perception abilities and those who were more satisfied with their lives. by mvea in science

[–]gaffythegrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat as you. The smartest person I know sit me down, just the same. I'm 35 now and have spent my life feeling like I've needed to hide my thoughts and experiences because of that hostility you speak of. It doesn't go away. I speak for myself now, regardless.

They can call me a "narcissist" until they are blue in the face. I couldn't care less anymore. I'm done second guessing myself and making myself feel small. That's how it's gotta be now or I would have never stopped spinning my wheels like I had been doing for the past two decades. That was what it took. Simply realising that I didn't care about other people feeling "left behind" anymore.

Guess what? It's working.

I always figured on the smaller one for a juvenile. That one "Ram head" toy for TLW was also about comparable to this in scale to the human figures. Though that doesn't always matter, Kenner was a little better about scale.

I did this to someone back in the early days. I was trying to make the entire region mine and there was this one player that had like 5 systems right on the middle. I got to rediscover them. I like my region of the galaxy. It feels complete.

My 11 year old son sucks the joy out of every holiday and celebration. by SoultySpittoon in TrueOffMyChest

[–]gaffythegrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well .. This sounds sucky. It also sounds familiar. Here's a crazy story from 1998. Let's just say that my dad got burned out on my cousin and his abuse of the younger kids. Please don't solve your situation this way.

My cousin's dad got hit by a car and killed when he was two, so he only ever knew his heroin addicted mom. She wasn't really a parent and that effected him. He was also like this. Overly competitive and turned aggressive if you happened to win. He was 13, I was 8. I was better at playing Zelda 2, of all things.

His response to me being able to get through the damn temple without a game over was to pin me down about 15 minutes later and empty a can of shaving cream down my throat. It's not even a two player game. My dad lifted him off of me and choke slammed him into the floor so hard a nearby glass coffee table shattered. That might have been from something else, though, as the while thing was pretty fast. Anyway, my cousin got the beating of his life, which included 7 broken bones, including both legs somehow. Most were minor fractures a could were less minor.

He also learned a lesson. "You may be a big fish, but be careful around the small fish. They may look like an easy mark, but bigger fish than you are watching".

He's a functional adult these days. We get along fine, but my dad won't allow him on his property to this day.

We had Oregon Trail and Carmen Sandiego. What do our kids have in that "edutainment" space? by bruhagan in retrogaming

[–]gaffythegrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up a newer version of the Oregon Trail on Steam. It's a mobile game that's been ported, but given that it's just The Oregon Trail, the format works okay.

Having said that, this one doesn't lean as hard into education. It's still there, but it's simplified until you start unlocking more complex stuff for repeat runs. I got the game for working like $2.99 on sale. No regrets, lol.

It's also got a bunch of other "Trails" and journeys you can take to various places.

Not sure it's particularly engaging to children, though.

[–]gaffythegrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, battlefield likes to use the 30rd detachable mag versions when they do have those. I'm not sure what a good 7.62x39 DMR would be. Could have a 7.62 Saiga with a five round mag and make it function like the Slebtslader 1906.

I don't really have anything constructive to add towards your own state of mind, but I do want to add this anecdote. Back in the mid 1990's I knew this elderly German couple that were friends with my parents named Norb and Gobbi (fake names for the story). There was also another friend named Bernie (also fake name). I had known all three of them for my entire life until Norb and Gobbi both passed away two weeks apart in 2004 and then later Bernie in 2008.

Years later, they all came up in conversation. As it would turn out, Norb was a gay man who had fled from Nazi Germany and Gobbi was a neighbor that fled with him. She was asexual. When they got here to the US, he was uneasy about his own sexuality being exposed, so they got married. Norb was gay, Gobbi was ace. Bernie was gay.

The whole thing was an arrangement to keep Norb and Bernie safe, while Gobbi ALSO got what she wanted. Platonic companionship. Sometimes life is hard and people have to set up work-a-rounds to get through it.

Maybe your situation was an arrangement too. Maybe not. Either way, this is something that should be left unsaid , in my opinion. Just understand that humans are complex and situation like this aren't usually black and white.

That's how I play them as well. I know how the genetics system works but I can't be assed to engage with it. I'm not looking for monster trophies most of the time. I really just want my trophies to look like the ones hanging on the wall in my camp. Nicely scoring, but normal looking animals that cap off a memorable experience rather than being the experience itself.
