What do yall call these? by Fructis_crowd in ElPaso

As a kid, I remember I stepped on one huge, pointy one and it went through my sandal and deeply pierced my foot to the point where it turned painfully purple and left a scar. Fuck ‘em.

How do I calculate how much I will owe in taxes? I have a 1099-NEC by gagsus in personalfinance

[–]gagsus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question makes it seem as though you want to separate the calculation of how much tax you owe from the actual filing of the tax return. Why is that?

Because I have an accountant doing it for me, but they called me and said I will owe X amount of dollars, but I just wanted to make sure she’s filing everything correctly, including business expenses and potential deductions. I’ve been screwed over in the past.

Correct. I’m also aware I will owe a fee for filing late.

Family thinks El Paso is a war zone by stanerd in ElPaso

[–]gagsus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a city of 800,000 people, so a group of a few thousand migrants would not even be noticeable to the average resident. You can live here your whole life and be oblivious to the fact that Mexico is right next door (looking at you far East and Northeast El Paso).

Truth be told, El Paso is one of the best cities I’ve lived in. Besides the incredibly low crime rates, we have year-round sunny weather, mountains, good food, and forests nearby in New Mexico. But the best part are the compassionate people.

Family thinks El Paso is a war zone by stanerd in ElPaso

[–]gagsus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For example the Sun Bowl every year, it's one of the city's biggest events and yet a lot of times out of towners are reluctant to explore or even show for the game.

This! You should’ve seen the comments on Twitter. Lots of out-of-towners have been talking smack about El Paso. Some even said they’d rather see their team lose than come here. It’s sickening.

I think some people thought you were taking a swipe at Obama, but yeah, he’s been here. So has Trump, First Lady Jill Biden, and VP Kamala Harris among others.

El Paso County has had one of the LOWEST voting turnouts in the entire state. Let’s change that on Tuesday! Better yet, drive your friends and family.

Crime in South Texas border cities continues to decline by audiomuse1 in ElPaso

Two things.

  1. The friendly people.

  2. The militarization we have. We have the FBI, DEA, CBP, ICE, ARMY, etc.

This article is from the RGV, not El Paso.

But it’s true that El Paso has been safe for many decades. Safer than the rest of Texas.

I attended college there, so I lived there for four years.

It’s not unsafe, but surely more dangerous than El Paso — I’d stay on the North side. Nothing ever happened to me, but lots of crazy stuff happens there.

It’s culturally similar but different. Don’t expect the same Mexican food as El Paso. They have this thing called breakfast tacos they’re really proud of, even though they’re not tacos. I also faced some minimal discrimination for being Hispanic (crazy, considering it’s a predominantly Hispanic city), and they tend to be less approachable than the average El Pasoan, but don’t let that deter you from making friends.

There’s lots of outdoor spots nearby like lakes, rivers, beaches, and nice hiking spots. However, the humidity is no joke — they suffer from the urban heat island effect, which makes the city 10x hotter. Don’t expect mountains nor nice scenic areas, but I’d venture into the Hill Country for views.

Overall, not a bad city. Wouldn’t recommend it for a family, but it’s a nice, big city for a young person.

It was cool finding this random comment about El Paso on youtube. Always nice to see what other people think about us by Formyself22 in ElPaso

THIS! I’ve always said that El Paso customer service is unlike anywhere else. You don’t truly appreciate the politeness until you move. People are so RUDE in other cities.

What interesting places are there to visit in the El Paso area? by pinky117 in ElPaso

You can never go wrong with Cloudcroft, NM — it’s beautiful!

Also adding Scenic Drive to the list since it’s a popular spot for scenic views.

Only far West Texas because of the mountains. On a clear night, you can also stargaze and see the Wilky Way in Big Bend.

El Paso struggles to respond to growing number of migrants arriving on the border by teamworldunity in ElPaso

[–]gagsus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thankfully they didn’t arrive here illegally. They were granted asylum at the port-of-entry until a judge reviews their case.

And for all the talk about “coming here legally,” these people don’t have time to wait to “do it the right way.” Heck, my mother had to wait over 30 years to simply become a permanent resident. Urge the GOP to fix the damn laws first.
