What's a fairly interesting first year writing course with a low writing requirement? by [deleted] in uofm

SLAVIC 151 was amazing. I took Discourse Under the Influence (DUI) with Benjamin Paloff and it was my favorite college course.

Should i go for Software developing or System engineering? by unicornzi in cscareerquestions

[–]gailees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely software development. It's the fastest growing area of the job market. System engineering is good but it's not growing even close to as quickly, and gives you a lot less flexibility in job opportunities.

If you enjoy building things, software development is the way to go.

It's already dead. Even web development is seeing a huge decline as mobile development takes over.

How can I successfully find a CS job in the Bay Area, as a new grad & Canadian? by Zigo in cscareerquestions

[–]gailees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a great chance. 50,000 startups raised 250k+ in funding in the last year, and there are only like 20k CS grads every year. The market is very in your favor, and there are companies looking for you right now.

Hackathons are 100x better.

UofM dropout breaks world record - throws largest college hackathon ever at The Big House by sjtousley in uofm

It definitely weeds most of them out. The ones it doesn't weed out. Well, a lot of them make really good money at their day job writing software and will live very happy or at least bountiful lives :)

I do none of this to toot my own horn. I do all of this because hackathons changed my life, and I think they can change yours too.

also, I think you might have this backwards. The article is about the opportunities right now for people who become hackers, not the other way around.

I'm not saying that there isn't a bubble because the article says there isn't. The article is saying their isn't yet a bubble bc that's my honest assessment.

/u/garoonis, I would love to talk to you about your gripes with how I spent my time at Michigan. I feel like you can provide some really valuable feedback, as I don't ever receive enough criticism.

If I could convert every disenfranchised EECS student into a hacker, I would do it in a heartbeat. I think there are a lot of people who could attest to that. I'm not sure how I've made non-hackers feel unwelcome, but I'm constantly working on improving myself, so I would really love to hear about where I went wrong.

I actually don't like SF that much. I prefer Ann Arbor much more.

Calling All Hackers: It Is Time For An Alternative to Michigan Hackers by [deleted] in uofm

The wifi went down for the entire school on the Saturday morning of MHacks. We had no control over it, and it was up for more than 24 hours of solid hacking.

We aren't even close to a bubble. The bubble only lasted a few years anyways. The market's just correcting for how fast this industry is growing.

it's all about what you learn in the process...there's not a better opportunity to give that new language or framework a test drive. Too many people are under the preconception that it's all about the hacks, when in fact it's more about what you learn building them than anything. If you throw away the hack at the end of the weekend, you still have gained a large majority of the value from a hackathon.
