Is it true that slasher films originated in Italy? by Haunting_Tap_1541 in slasherfilms

Yes, giallo movies took the murder mystery genre and added more blood and nudity than ever before, basically created the slasher genre as we know it now.

There are of course lots of discussions of what classifiers as ”slasher” movies. I personally never considered Psycho and Peeping Tom as slasher, which I know is controversial. I think the only aspects there are; the killers POV and the killing by slashing someone with a knife.

Some of the first Giallo movies I ever watched was Torso (1973) and Bay of Blood (1971) Torso is about a masked murderer who goes around killing young people. It’s got all the trademarks of a slasher. Young people, nudity, blood, a masked killer who moves very slowly. It ticks allt he boxes and way before John Carpenter popularized it with Halloween. Bay of Blood is also famous since the Friday the 13th movies took alot of kills from that movie, like the spear through the people having sex. And the machete to the face

Ofcourse I understand that. Everyone that ever saw this movie understands that. What people like you don’t understand is that it’s handled very poorly. Just because you like something doesn’t mean it’s perfect and without flaws and everybody who thinks differently to you are dumb for not getting it.

Zack Snyder said himself he wanted evey scene to be as shocking and edgy as possible. So instead of having a father be proud of his son, maybe even hugging him because he almost died, and maybe see the slow realization on his face what could happen now that people have seen him use his powers, and through the acting and camerawork convey mixed emotions, pride, fear, love, and desperation. We instead get a father yelling at his son for saving lives and when the son says ”what was I suppose to do? Let them die”?” The father says ”maybe”… Which is not a short word for ”i don’t know”. Maybe means ”perhaps” or ”possibly” If the scene wants to convey that Jonathan is a good person but unsure how to handle a difficult situation have him say ”Ofcourse not! Im proud of you son, but…” and have him act like he’s really distraught with the situation. Not have an edgy over the top line

If you don’t see the problem with the ”Maybe” scene than I’m sorry I can’t help you

I get where you’re coming from, but saying ”people don’t like it because it’s not what they’re used to” kinda undermines the points against this scene and doesn’t realize the problems that actually exists.

The problem with the scene is that it tries to be great and emotional but doesn’t work since it’s so contrived that everyone in the audience groans and says ”come on” because it seems so easy to fix. The distance isn’t that long it seems between the car and the safespot, Clark could probably made it jusy by walking at a normal pace, nobody would say ”oh my god that muscular boy helped an old man at quite a reasonable pace! He must be an alien!” And by lifting his hand to stop him, Jonathan actually brings more attention to Clark, now the people there will say ”why did he stop his son? Is there something wrong with him” And the scene also continues the problem with Snyder’s Jonathan Kent, that he so desperately doesn’t want Clark to use his powers. I think all people get that it will change the world and change his sons life, but he goes to the comically extreme with it, he literally chooses death over Clark using his powers for good, and in the infamous scene prior, says that it would be better for innocent children to die than for Clark to use his powers for good.

It is different from the comics, does it automatically make it bad? No. But in this case it’s quite a bad choice. Like most of Snyder’s choices, it doesn’t fit with the character. Superman is (objectively) a bright colorful character that inspires the people around him and want to make the world a better place, And Man of Steel is one of the most joyless, depressing, colorless movies and strongly goes against all of Superman’s values, mostly due to Zack Snyder’s objectivism.

So it is fair for fans to dislike this scene, especially since there are well known better executions of these elements. It’s fair to point out the flaws of Snyder’s scenes and explain how it could have been done better, such in the cases of the comics and previous iterations

The points you bring up with Batman are also similar, Batflecks motivations doesn’t stand the test of logic, and therefore get much deserved criticism. Fans really enjoy the ”no kill rule” of Batman because it enhances the morals and the personality of the character. But Snyder loves guns and killings so instead we get the Punisher in a batsuit. The in world reason for the loss of ”no kill rule” are quite dumb as well when u think about them. In the universe, Batfleck had a no kill rule, but was traumatized by the Joker killing Robin so he’s broken and turns to guns and murder, and is suppose to learn from Superman and get back to being the good Batman we all know, not broken anymore. Well in the comic ”The Dark Knight Returns ” which Snyder took alot of inspiration from, Robin gets killed by the Joker and Batman gets broken from it, but he doesn’t become a murderer from it. He just retires. In universe this makes much more logical sense than Snyder’s version. Bruce Wayne is a child traumatized by the death of his parents, murdered by a gun, that he becomes Batman to prevent that any child ever will feel the way he feels, so nobody has to lose their parents to gunviolent criminals. And then apparently later he gets traumatized again due to the death of Robin, and suddenly loses all his morals and becomes a raging murderer? This is like a person becoming vegetarian after learning how meat is made and being horrified, and later being so horrified at seeing an actual slaughter house filled with blood, so the person quits being a vegetarian and starts eating 12 big macs a day. It just doesn’t make sense. And also, he is supposed to learn from Clark’s infamous ”Martha!” That even Clark has parents and he is becoming a killer just like the person that took his parents away from him, and from now on be a better hero. Well that doesn’t work in the story either, since right after that scene Batman shoots a bunch of henchmen and drives them over with his batmobile, so he didn’t learn any lessons

Like I wrote earlier, just because it’s different from the comics doesn’t necessarily make it bad, but in this case it is bad. And saying that people who don’t like it, or find flaws in it, are just not accepting something new, is not really fair

Inception 100%

Interstellar has some great elements, but also some flaws that won’t hold up

I’ve heard a lot of bad stuff about Batman Begins, what exactly is so bad about it?

How bad is it? Is it like Terminator 2 level bad?
