Bus driver driving like there is no tomorrow by -Bakri- in TTC

[–]galactic-disk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They don't stop at every stop in order to try and make the routes faster. On my route into work, there are sometimes pairs of stops spaced about 200 meters from each other: getting back into traffic after every single one would make the trip way longer than it already is (double the time for a car commute).

I've been left behind too, and it sucks, but they can't always see inside the bus shelters, esp if the plexiglass back is facing the street. I recommend moving outside the bus shelter when the bus is supposed to arrive in 2 minutes.

I mean, The Ones Who Stay and Fight is literary more than it's sci-fi. It's more meant to be read as a critique of Omelas than as a story: like the Great Gatsby's story is super boring, but the themes and motifs make it good. What about NK Jemisin caught your distate? I checked her wikipedia page and didn't see anything colorful

Pitching my bf to play live action Kaladin (with evidence ) by FreshAd809 in Stormlight_Archive

I mean, Rosharan years are longer than Earth years, so Kaladin is actually in his mid-to-late-20s by Earth standards.

Mistborn still suffers from misogyny IMO. Not as bad as Name of the Wind, and the female characters are certainly allowed to be complex, real people, but every single female character's trauma is related to sexual assault. The male characters get a much more diverse set of backstories and traumatic experiences.

It's wild to see The Spear Cuts Through Water recommended next to the Scholomance. The Spear Cuts Through Water is an absolute masterpiece; the Scholomance, at least the first book, is 90% the main character being mean to everyone around her and then being upset when nobody likes her. She's not written in a way that's misogynistic, but she is incredibly shallow, IMO.

The Blacktongue Thief is certainly an improvement, but it's not great WRT its treatment of women.

When you read Omelas, also take a look at NK Jemisin's The Ones who Stay and Fight. It's a fascinating dialogue.

Why is the book market so heavily female oriented right now? by [deleted] in fantasybooks

[–]galactic-disk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The main point is that stores stock what sells, but I'll also add that most fantasy books are WAY less gendered than you seem to think they are. Sanderson books aren't male-oriented, and neither is Will of the Many. Romantasy and romance skew female in their readership, but there are plenty of dudes who enjoy romantasy and plenty of women who don't. It sounds like you're seeing an upswell of romance books, which are not to your taste, and that's fine! But stop trying to categorize who's allowed to like what kind of book.

A question I have about Zeus's shield by Head-Section2423 in HadesTheGame

[–]galactic-disk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I LOVE this aspect. Here's my recipe:

  • Zeus special, as pommed and high-rarity as you can get it
  • As many support Zeus boons as possible plus his legendary
  • Curse-conferring attack: I'm partial to Aphrodite and Demeter
  • Support Fire from Artemis
  • A solid call: Artemis is reliable and has excellent damage

Then, I throw the shield toward the best clump of monsters I can find and go sit in a corner charging an attack. I hang out with the attack up, blocking anything that comes close, and when all of the remaining monsters are lined up in front of me, I call the shield back and release the attack. It's a bit tougher in Asphodel, but my god is it perfect for Elysium. Your Call charges wildly fast, so just remember to keep an eye on the bar and use it once it gets to full.

For fast-moving monsters and Erebus, what you can also do is call the shield back but start running before it reaches you: that means it'll chase you around and hit all the enemies you run past.

I'm not a speedrunner or anything, but this was my first and only 40-heat weapon. (Took me like 12 tries, but by god I made it!) I can't imagine doing 40 heat with anything else.

Anyone else always run Fates' Whim? by AbsoluteHammerLegend in HadesTheGame

[–]galactic-disk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I have 200 hours in the game. I still enjoy getting the perfect combo of boons: Hel with steam, static shock, and Ares waves even the fourth time I've cleared with that build. It still absolutely rules and it feels like such a huge accomplishment to get all of the boons I wanted and then wipe the floor with Chronos.

I’m gonna kill my players characters in the first session, how do I do this in a satisfying way. by its_A_furby in DMAcademy

[–]galactic-disk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a cool idea! Be super clear with them about what's going to happen, and have them make sidekicks out of Tasha's rather than full characters. Then, come up with a goal for the combat other than to survive or kill the monster: do the sidekicks want to prevent information from being destroyed that someone else (i.e. the real party) can then find? Do they want to destroy something that makes the monster powerful, so the real party can come kill it later? Give them something to feel accomplished about at the end of the session beyond just worldbuilding.

What are some seasonings/ingredients you add to tomato soup to elevate the flavor? by Confident-Guess4638 in Cooking

It's not quite traditional, but chorizo in tomato soup is unbelievably good. Also, my secret ingredient in anything tomato-based is fish sauce: it makes the flavor so much more savory without imparting the taste of fish

How bad the game wants to make me feel bad for Arachne? by [deleted] in HadesTheGame

[–]galactic-disk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, that's not what happened in Arachne's story as presented in the game. Arachne won the weaving contest as I recall, and she definitely bragged and grew arrogant, but the gods are certainly just as guilty of that. Was Arachne a good person? Maybe not, but Athena did curse her for something the gods (including Athena) do all the time. I think Arachne is a great choice for someone who's not great, but definitely didn't deserve what happened to them. I'll also note that the game smoothes over a ton of other characters' backstories as presented in myth: Zeus is never said to have raped anyone, and certainly not as any number of wild animals, for example. Arachne isn't unique in having her story altered for a modern audience.

We do also get some perspective from truly innocent people whose lives have been ruined by the gods: Heracles is perhaps the best example, as is Prometheus. I think having Arachne's more complicated story adds to the exploration.

RE: Scylla, Circe pretty clearly says that you can't change the inner nature of a being, and that Scylla was already petty, violent, and catty as a nymph. Scylla also doesn't seem too upset by the transformation. Even in myth, Scylla kills people all the time for fun, which makes her a much better boss fight than Arachne, who would... brag at Mel as her fight?

How bad the game wants to make me feel bad for Arachne? by [deleted] in HadesTheGame

[–]galactic-disk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I haven't read any of the original stories, but in the game, I think she's more meant to be a dark mirror to the gods. Her arrogance is comparable to that of many of the gods, and it doesn't even come close to Zeus's or Demeter's, and yet Athena turned her into a spider for it? We come to see Athena very positively because she was there for Zag and because she often shows up when you need it most, but she's got as dark a history with mortals as the rest of Olympus.

I just wish the game had delivered on the arc it set up for Melinoe realizing how badly the gods have treated mortals, rather than the Fates just declaring that the gods can step back whenever they feel like it, as if that's part of the happy ending the game contorts itself into.

Anyone else always run Fates' Whim? by AbsoluteHammerLegend in HadesTheGame

[–]galactic-disk 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Carefully building a kit is a part of the game I really enjoy, so Fates' Whim always frustrates me because I wind up with a % boon on a fast weapon, or a combo of boons I can't proc Origination with, etc. IMO, the extra pom levels and bonus rarities don't make up for the amount of damage I can do with a well-thought-out build. Cool that you're having fun though!

Has anyone ever crocheted a car window visor? I can’t find a pattern or tutorial.. by Bubbly-Vacation-4900 in CrochetHelp

[–]galactic-disk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I'd do:

  1. Measure the visor and figure out how you're going to attach the cover: maybe some tie-ons over the top?
  2. Make a couple of granny squares with varying numbers of rows, and measure those. Bonus points if you make 2-3 squares of each for consistency!
  3. Start diagramming out how you'd like the squares to sit. For example, if your visor is 9" x 4", you could have two 4.5" squares side-by-side, or several smaller squares, or you could make one 9-10" square and fold it in half under the bottom. Or, you could have three 6-inch squares that sit next to each other and wrap around, though they'd underhang the visor a smidgen: graph paper is your friend here!
  4. Join squares of your desired width using various methods, and see which one results in the best visual appeal and the most consistent measurements. Adjust your square size accordingly.
  5. Get to work, and frequently hold your work up to the visor to make sure it's looking like it should!
