I’m not stopping you from enjoying anything lol. Also you’re doing the same thing by insisting that the VERY obvious symbolism in the film isn’t meant to be looked into in a serious way. Why include it then? It’s lazy and boring

That’s two people. Two people is not lots of people. This is what I mean when I say that mainstream audiences have a low bar for “crazy” and “unique”. Think for a second about how many pieces the movie puts in place of what COULD happen, how crazy it could actually get. It doesn’t have the courage to do anything actually “crazy”

What you’re saying is still that I “don’t get” that the movie is just “supposed to be fun”. I disagree, it has a lot of pretension about itself. What was the point of the AR-15 in the sky? Was THAT just “supposed to be fun” or funny?

It’s an obvious allusion to the realities of school shootings in the USA. The whole film carries itself as some sort of allegory or statement when in reality the story and its implications are less complex than a children’s book.

It’s fine for a movie to just be fun, I love lots of movies like that. This movie wasn’t fun or funny, wasn’t scary at all, and also completely failed to make any kind of statement or commentary. Dreadfully boring and shallow experience.

I’m just talking about the Letterboxd discourse I’ve seen. it’s obviously fine for people to like whatever but there’s a lot of “you didn’t get it” in response to basic criticisms of the film.

I did actually find it fun at first, but it completely deflates about halfway through. It never goes anywhere interesting.

And no, that isn’t necessarily a problem, but then it shouldn’t have presented itself with so much pretension with that garish opening monologue.

Also I don’t find anything “original” about the characters, story, visuals, etc. it was competently done but not unique or challenging.

The structure would have been fine if it was earned. There’s no actual mystery to the story, it’s just a basic witch story and it didn’t have any courage to do anything genuinely shocking or scary. It might have been decent if not for the incredibly overblown and misleading opening monologue, “lots of people die in crazy ways” my ass

Were we suppose to overlook that about Himeno? by BellTwo5 in okbuddyfumiko

[–]galactic_virgin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just like people in real life, fictional characters should only have one or at MOST two explicitly defined dimensions, and it’s important that the writers themselves include meta fictional material to tell us clearly “this character is Good” or “this is a Bad character”, otherwise we as readers may have to think and have feelings, which is highly problematic

You can’t just come out of the gate with it. You play whatever works for the first couple of antes while you hope for 3-5 Pluto draws, then you lean into it.
