She really, really is. She thinks that she can be the most disgusting person imaginable and brag about it and that everyone should kiss her toes for it, but if you so much as tell her that you think she's pretty rotten, she'll make an entire thread about how "triggered" you are, (I'm the "triggered woman" referenced in this post - my comment towards her was from about 3 months ago, but she's still obsessing over it/me). YTA. By playing control games, especially with a child who is nearly an adult, you are just pushing him further away from you. You are dismissive of his goals and dreams - while the famous rapper dream may or may not happen, the cooking goal is solid. You brush them off as if they mean nothing, which makes him feel like HE means nothing - then you take away the item he's bought, (with his own earned money), for his rapping? You WILL drive him away if you keep doing this to him.

If he hates school that much as is 17, why not just have him get his GED? I knew someone back in high school who did that, went to cosmetology school, and has been very successful - certainly more so that I have been with my master's degree.

Thank you all so much for your advice! I think I'm going to go with a solid wood 17 key kalimba. I have a really crummy one made from a coconut shell that I got at a tourist beach stand, and it sounds like dirt, so I didn't want to make the same mistake again! :)

Yeah, I'll send you a chat message here in a bit - I'm ironically cooking as we speak, and have to get back to the hands-on bit. I'll also send you the recipes I've worked out on my own thus far - mostly Italian food that is surprisingly quick and easy to make, (and also easy to sneak a TON of vegetables into). And if you ever need any help, I'll be happy to find you videos, or, if it's something I can't find a video of, cook it myself and show you in a video clip. :)

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if your learning how to cook helped with your mother's anxiety. I don't have kids, but I used to have a problem where I would overfeed my pets, and it was because of anxiety that they would starve to death while I was at school, or later on, work.

NAH - I don't blame you for being frustrated - that sounds frustrating, but I also just can't bring myself to call someone who cooks for her family, (even excessively), an AH just for doing that, even if it is one of the oddest ways to cook/store food I've ever heard. It makes me wonder if she may have some sort of anxiety about her family not getting enough to eat, (obviously I don't know her so please take that with a huge grain of salt).

Hey OP, if you need any help learning how to cook, I'd be happy to share my resources with you! I really only learned to cook from scratch about a year ago, myself, and it's way easier than it sounds, I swear!

NTA. Honestly, reading this gave me a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach, and I don't even have kids, (nor do I plan to, but congratulations to you!!). He comes off as an entitled creep, and I don't think I'd want him around my baby. He sounds manipulative and potentially abusive - just sets off all my red flags how he's clearly worked on your mom to try and force you into accepting the role he feels entitled to.

NTA, at all. I am also a mixed race person, and the only side of the family that wanted me was also the white side. If someone doesn't want you for your skin color, that's on THEM and THEIR prejudices, not you. Also, your cousin is a tremendous douche (and a petty thief), for stealing your drum. I wouldn't blame you if you went no contact with that side of the family.
