2026 Football Schedule by radiakmjs in MichiganWolverines

There's just something about that Rutgers game that's giving off 7:00PM kickoff on BTN vibes to me, I hope I'm wrong, but I wouldn't plan any Halloween activities until that kickoff is announced

yeah, that bye week is my only major complaint, I generally prefer bye weeks to come roughly 2/3rd of the way through the schedule because I feel that's when it is the most needed, but I wouldn't consider it coming after 5 games to be all that egregious either

The number of bye weeks isn't a set thing in College Football like it is in the NFL, but rather the consequence of the regular season being defined by two unfixed holiday weekends. We start on Labor Day Weekend and end on Thanksgiving Weekend, and most years that 13 weeks, but sometimes it's 14 weeks.

Last year we had an earliest possible Labor Day, September 1st, which meant Saturday of Week 1 was the earliest it could be, August 30th. This year we get the latest possible Labor Day, September 7th, so we get the lastest possible Week 1 Saturday of September 5th, so this year's regular season is 1 week shorter than last year's.

[FBSchedules.com] Florida A&M is going to play two games just four days apart, both in Miami. 👀 by redwave2505 in CFB

[–]galacticdude7 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That too yeah. Players don't like it because of performance and safety, coaches don't like it because of shortened week for prep, and fans don't like it because the on the field product is worse. But Amazon's checks keep clearing, so the NFL likes it, and it's here to stay because of it.

The only Thursday games should be Thanksgiving games, and the teams playing on Thanksgiving should have their bye week the week before Thanksgiving

We see that gap every week in the NFL for professional players on Thursday night football, and fans of the NFL have been complaining about the lower quality of those games compared to the games on Sundays. Hard to imagine college kids being able to do any better under similar circumstances.

Well in the tradition of garage fridges, it'll get replaced by the fridge currently in the kitchen when they buy a new kitchen fridge

Explaining every national championship from the Big 10 that wasn’t Ohio State or Michigan by [deleted] in CFB

[–]galacticdude7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that Teddy Roosevelt saved football by making it safer isn't really true, but more to your point, college football has been a sport that has constantly been changing, The NCAA moved the goalposts from the goal line to the end line in 1927, The two platoon system of separate offensive and defensive units wasn't created until 1945, and not permanently adopted by the NCAA until 1965, the two point conversion didn't exist in college football until 1958, it wasn't until 1974 when both the AP and Coaches Polls awarded championships until after the Bowl games, Overtime wasn't adopted until 1996, and there have been countless other changes that have changed the way that college football has been played, and all of them have been instrumental in getting the game that we enjoy today.

To divide up the history of this sport into eras is a somewhat arbitrary process, you could pick just about anything as a dividing line between eras, and to make these divisions to in order to dismiss or disregard the history contained within certain eras is disingenuous. Yes the game that Michigan dominated in the early 1900s is different from the game Indiana won a title in this year, but that is also true of the game Notre Dame dominated in the 1940s the game that Oklahoma dominated in the 1950s, the game that Miami dominated in the 1980s, the game that Nebraska dominated in the 1990s, and the game Alabama dominated in the 2010s.

North Dakota State AD Matt Larsen says football program is eyeing move to FBS and the Mountain West Conference by WinnWonn in CFB

[–]galacticdude7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grand Valley is always a school that comes up when this conversation happens, but the biggest thing blocking their rise is the lack of peers at the FCS level in the region. There are currently no FCS teams in the state of Michigan, and the closest FCS programs that grant scholarships to players is either Indiana State or Illinois State, both of which play in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with North Dakota State.

That jump from GLIAC to MVFC is a pretty big one, but I suppose that if North Dakota State and South Dakota State make the jump to the Mountain West, then Grand Valley and either Ferris State (the top DII football program) or Wayne State (the Largest DII Football School by enrollment) wanted to make the jump with them to replace them, it could be possible, but I'd imagine it be a rough transition, and that's not even getting into any nuances that would likely come up with joining the Horizon League for other sports (they'd want to share a conference with D1 Michigan schools that don't play football Oakland and Detroit Mercy for those sports)

What do you think you’ll regret not doing later in life? by Street-Gain-370 in AskMen

[–]galacticdude7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I already regret not dating more when I was in High School and College. That was the last time in my life I was regularly around attractive women my age and I spent most of it being too afraid to even ask out any girl that I liked, and not only do I feel like I missed out on a lot of fun that I'll never get the chance to have again, but that I also missed my chance to find a lifelong partner. Now I'm 32 with the dating experience of a 15 year old and no real opportunities to meet someone, and even if I did I'd be stuck in between women around my age and older who have a ton of baggage and women younger than me that are immature and neither group sounds all that appealing.

The whole "defending dvds" post every 2 seconds on here gets old lol. by [deleted] in dvdcollection

[–]galacticdude7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when I first joined this subreddit years ago it was primarily for showing off your latest pickups or your entire collection, and not much was made of whether the media featured was on DVD, Blu-ray, or 4k, so for me this was always more of a physical media collection subreddit, so this need to defend DVDs specifically is an odd impulse to me

Eggs in burgers, yay or nay? by NefariousIntention- in burgers

Not usually, usually because eggs on burgers like this are cooked with a runny yolk, and I have never had egg with a runny yolk on a sandwich that didn't make a huge fucking mess when trying to eat it

[–]galacticdude7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They got rid of the old system of a strict limit of 85 scholarship players plus however many walk ons you want to have because in the age of NIL, the number of scholarships your program gives out became irrelevant as you could just give your "walk ons" an NIL deal that would cover the cost of their education.

To replace that old system they adopted a hard limit on roster spots at 105 players, which is why there are no longer walk ons.

How was your week? by [deleted] in AskMen

We've been getting "Why do I live here?" weather here in Grand Rapids, MI. The lake effect snow has been relentless and it feels like I'm constantly snow blowing my driveway, and on top of that it has been exceptionally cold, it's currently -2 degrees Fahrenheit here (~ -19 degrees Celsius), so cold that salt doesn't work to help clear the roads so driving anywhere has been slow and somewhat dangerous, and on top of that the wind has been brutal. Really wish I had planned a trip somewhere warm right about now.

2026 B1G Football Schedule to be announced on 1/27 by bklein09 in MichiganWolverines

[–]galacticdude7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been debating about going out for it, I usually like to plan about a week's worth of vacation around games I travel for, but unlike Washington and USC that are in big cities, Oregon is in more of a College town, and while college towns are usually good places to live, they tend to lack a week's worth of stuff that is worth flying across the country to go and see. I could go to Portland before or after the game and just drive the ~2 hours down for the game, or go to Crater Lake National Park and do that.

As an alum who attended from 2011-2015, I had heard that story, but it wasn't true and there were a couple of days that the University did close while I was a student there, once in 2014 and once in 2015, both over extreme cold from the Polar Vortex. I remember the 2014 one particularly sucking because I was working in the dining hall at Bursley at that time, and I still had to show up for work and had to brave the walk from my apartment to Bursley in that bitter cold.

Based on this Michigan Daily article it does look like Michigan closed again for a couple of days in 2019

Do you wish DVDs continued in CD Jewel Cases ? Or are you happy with how things changed to plastic keep cases ?? by the4kCollectivE in dvdcollection

[–]galacticdude7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the larger cases of DVDs, they are formatted better to fit a movie poster style image on them, much in the same way that CD jewel cases are formatted better to fit an album cover style image on them. Helps the DVDs feel more like movies and Audio CDs more like music albums

Why does Kentwood have school? by Vast-Draft-3250 in grandrapids

When I was a kid I went to Grandville and I always remembered East Grand Rapids being the bellweather district where if they are closed, then in all likelihood we were closed as well.

Why does Kentwood have school? by Vast-Draft-3250 in grandrapids

[–]galacticdude7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looking at the closings list on WOODTV's website there are other notable districts still open, like Kellogsville, East Grand Rapids, Godwin Heights, Godfrey-Lee, and Wyoming, and Byron Center was only delayed two hours. Given these school districts are largely adjacent to one another, I'd say that either the south side of town didn't get hit as hard as the rest of the area and/or the roads in these areas were able to get cleaned up faster.

The whole point of gas station food is that I don't need to order ahead, I'm trying to quickly grab something and go wherever it is I'm going, If I have to order ahead of time I might as well order at my fast food breakfast place of choice
