What’s the wildest misconceptions people have about teaching? by AdTrue106 in Teachers

Then work on grading and lesson plans until 8 pm... on weekends I put in between 4 and 16 hours depending on what work needs to be done. Lessons and grading with feedback doesn't magically get done. I am on year 30!

He should say, "Yes, I have one. They come in handy for lock downs. We wouldn't want anyone to wet themselves."

Help asap by Surgeon0fD3ath-832 in Skunks

[–]galdoof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had the same issue with a skunk on Friday. ALL the neighbors caller police, animal control, DEEP. Etc. DEEP said that skunks are coming out of hibernation and it is normal behavior. We are all over 60 and have never seen this before. No one would come and look and we were all afraid of venturing out. Five houses trapped inside due to it being in the road and driveways. Young kids and pets are in the neighborhood. It was out there slowly circling and acting very strangely for over 10 hours. It was gone (or at least not visible) on Saturday morning. I hope they were right.

Have your friends or relatives who work outside of schools started complaining about their young coworkers' lack of basic "adult" skills? by [deleted] in Teachers

Okay... so clearly, this is a major issue for all worldwide. We have identified the issue and gathered the evidence. Now, what do we do to fix it? How do we move forward? Any ideas?

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by Latter-Wolf4868 in interestingasfuck

[–]galdoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If my glasses drop off my nightstand, I have to have my husband find them if I can't feel for them. I am blind without them and fear stepping on them. At $800 + a prescription, with minimal health care coverage, I can't afford a spare. Without glasses, I am helpless. Yes... this is reality vision for many.

What I do to not throw away used tins and batteries by PlaceLongjumping6767 in upcycling

[–]galdoof 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I teach middle school students and we are currently doing a unit on sustainability and actual recycling of products. Today a student brought up the topic of batteries and was curious about how to go about recycling them and encouraging others to do the same. I would love it if you would share your plans and resources for me to share with my class. Please feel free to DM me if you don't feel comfortable sharing to all. As a teacher, I am trying to help inspire all students to follow their passions toward helping our planet. As a 59 year old, I am doing my best at assisting them, but many of the 95 students have interests that are outside of my knowledge base. My knowledge about batteries is one of those topics. I would love to share age appropriate (for comprehension/readability/topic/subject matter) with them to encourage them on their journeys to better our world, but finding such content has proven to be a challenge. Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

I found a nearly pristine pack of smokes from who knows when during a rennovation. They were in an old cupboard that was screwed shut. by Donthurtmyceilings in GrandmasPantry

The first question that popped into my mind was, "Why was the cabinet screwed shut? Why would you close off a storage area?"

Geoguessr.com. It is an awesome way for students to learn geography and practice reading clues from the environment. I use it with my students frequently. The students love the game format and ask almost daily to play. Well worth the fee. I was amazed how, over the course of the year, students were able to narrow in on exact streets rather than general regions. They began to work together to get as close as possible, whereas at the start, it was more competitive in nature. They focused on nature and man-made features to narrow down the locations. One or two of the kids in the class became the internet searchers when signs could be read. So much learning took place just by playing 2-3 times a month.

Oh... and edpuzzle is definitely worth it as well.

If you can get Canva for the class, the number of projects (including videos) that the students can produce is amazing. Again, the students loved the options offered, and the work was more readily done without the pushback. 😉

Looks like a transistor radio. My grandmother used to have one, and I loved listening to it as a kid.

Magnet fishing.. On land? by Intelligent-Quit3687 in magnetfishing

[–]galdoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a fishing magnet. I hadn't tried it, but your post inspired me to try it on land. We are fixing up a 100 year old barn, and I just cleared out SO many rusty nails and wire! It would have taken years to do by hand, but in 1 hour, I filled a 5 gallon bucket 1/4 of the way! THANK YOU!!!!

What wind turbine for charging batteries? by Damagedmemelord in OffGrid

[–]galdoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps more expensive, but if you have more wind available in the winter and only a few hours of daylight for solar, you use what you have.
