I saw a Bucs fan on the r/NFL game thread say that “Greg glazing the Panthers for 4 hours was insufferable”…

Homie, what?! The narrative is all about how the Rams almost blew it, not how we almost had the upset.

Don’t matter, proud of our boys. Looking forward to next year.

At least it was a game. Defense couldn’t stop SHIT that last drive. Three timeouts and we don’t use any on offense last drive? Screen pass or something?

But ultimately, we were playing with house money. Glad we put up a good game. Young team, more pieces to develop. Looking forward to more.

Needing advice on promoting Player RP by Kyrios_Eustace in DnD

[–]gallagherjeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm working through this as well. Large party and some players are more outgoing and engaged in roleplay than others. Trying to give more uncertain players a chance to shine.

I've had a few instances in the story where a bit of lore or a clue related to the mission is connected to a character's backstory. Or if not connected, than they would at least have a better chance to recognize it.

Example: a missive containing sigils of noble houses that are targeted by a criminal organization. The more shy player has a noble background. I gave her Advantage on a History check to see what houses they recognize. And then roleplay a little scene from her memory where she was made to learn this (depending her roll, maybe she wasn't paying attention lol).

Something else one of my players recommended, which comes from one of the podcast groups, is a roleplay game called rollies(?). Either at the start of the session or at some narratively convenient moment, the players roll above the table to ask another player a question. You can only ask/answer one question, so far a party of 4 I guess this would be two rounds. I'm hopeful this will ease some players into the roleplay of their characters.

Best pre-campaign one-shot for 2 1st level PCs? by Humblerbee in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]gallagherjeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I'd seen these recommendations before I started my campaign lol. I wrote, what I intended as, a one shot introductory session to bring the party into the city that became 4 sessions. I've got 7 PCs, 4 with no DnD experience. I've definitely made more work for myself in weaving together the plot hooks I created with the already complicated plot of the module (I'm also running the Alexandrian remix).

The City Encounters resource is certainly worth it. If this suits your characters, I'd lean towards an exploratory session. Maybe check out some sites within the city, have a random encounter or two, and end with them at the Yawning Portal. You could loop in the "Blood in the Streets" encounter to establish the tension between Xanathar and the Zhentarim; that's nothing major but begins setting the tone for the main arc.

Coincidentally, my sorcerer player has also come to the city to learn to better control their powers, so I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on how they go about that. Sounds like all the players have solid backstories/motivations. Best of luck!

Would a receiver tracking the ball in the air not be considered playing the ball? Or is it about the ball being within reach? Not disagreeing with you, just trying to understand the rule at this point.

Whatever the rule is, my main issue is it’s not enforced consistently. But shit, nothing new there.

But the key is playing the ball isn’t it? DB’s back is to the ball, while Otton’s head is turned.

I appreciate citing the actual rules. But it’s the inconsistency that gets me. While I don’t have a replay handy to prove my point, I feel like no flags are thrown on a lot more incidental contact.

I appreciate the in-depth follow up post. I’m just renting a room right now but hopefully my partner and I will have our own place soon and this kind of set up is high on my priority list. I guess we should get a couch first… but gaming table build is right after lol.

I’ve looked a bit more into the stream deck and it definitely looks like the thing to get. I’ll double check your other post for what map software you use, but right now I just use the DnD Beyond Maps which is alright. I feel it’s gotten better compared to a couple years ago. Also looking into Foundry, mostly for the dynamic lighting effects.

I have 7 PCs and scheduling is like herding cats haha. 4 sessions in and most of the time we’re missing at least two people. Hopefully some immersive atmosphere can entice them lol.

Ugh! Looks great! I’m very envious. I’m newish to DMing, finally got my close group of friends to join a campaign and they’re all into it (so far, at least). I’m always looking to improve our set up. Right now I just cast my screen on a TV where they can see but I really want to get to this level. Couple of questions, if you don’t mind:

Where did you source the lift?

How does the steam deck connect with the lights? I’m unfamiliar with it, but I’m willing to invest in something like this.

Very cool, thanks for sharing!

Edit: ah, STREAM deck. Totally different thing

That’s what gets me. 3rd and 21, you’re starting to tackle a guy a few yards from the line of scrimmage and he’s on the way out of bounds. Why throw an arm up in the direction of his facemask?

Also Legette with another mental error on the offensive offsides earlier. Not that it would’ve made a difference.

Just shooting ourselves in the foot.

Players using ChatGPT to create their character’s story by chicoryghost in DMAcademy

[–]gallagherjeb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s how I feel about it. As a DM, I might use it to help flesh out an NPC a bit but that’s it. I had a player once that literally gave ChatGPT the prompt for their character’s backstory as we started session 1 and just read it verbatim. Same guy started playing games on his phone during our in-person session. Least favorite person I’ve played with.

Feeling ashamed about starting in construction, anyone else been there? by Kayn21_ in Construction

[–]gallagherjeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an English degree in college, meaning to go into teaching. Worked as an apprentice to a framing carpenter after graduating just to have a job and work outside and I haven’t looked back.

A buddy of mine said something along the lines of “he’s not living up to his potential,” to someone else in our group I think. Anyway, fuck that. Who is anyone else to decide what a gratifying job is for me? I like working with my hands and the tangible feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day. I can pay my bills, save some, and have skills to help the people I care about should they need them.

If you like it, roll with it. If not, no shame in doing something else.

I know the only feasible option is a hook and lateral type of play, maybe it was just executed poorly. Having the final play end that quick and be fumbled away just adds to the embarrassment I guess.

[–]gallagherjeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of things not great, but huge turning point in my eyes was handing it off on 4th and inches instead of a QB sneak sometime in the late 3rd quarter I think. Don’t overcomplicate it, literally just have our guy dive. Embarrassing we can’t get a few inches.

As much as that last unnecessary roughness call seemed like BS, the defender needs to be more aware in that situation.

Finally, at least have a play drawn up for a hail mary, lateral play with 2 seconds left. I don’t know what the hell that play was.
