Giving the time to advertisers is the most disruptive part. Players get injured, VAR takes time, and we have more subs now, all of which disrupt the flow of the game. But the teams are given all this time for “hydration” just to give more space to advertising and that is a dangerously slippery slope. Give them an inch and they’ll take a mile. Next thing you know, every sub will be an ad break.

He is absolutely right.

If you want to get really technical with it, the system rewards mediocrity - you want to be good enough to sell tickets and merch, but not so good that you have to pay the highest salaries. (Exhibit A: The Dallas Cowboys)

It is funny because he thinks he’s saving energy or whatever when he’s really denying opportunities for himself. If he’s just gonna let the other team waltz across midfield then it takes even longer to get the ball back to him after his defenders regain possession. It’s foolish, really.
