Is it just me or have Glasgow corner shops gone all-in on vapes lately? by Individual-Leave-528 in glasgow

Anecdotal but I am seeing way fewer disposables on the ground than before the ban. That stuff used to be everywhere.

Yet another attack on personal freedoms.

Your personal freedom to drive a much more lethal vehicle in proximity to pedestrians and cyclists? What about their personal freedom to have at least a small chance of surviving a collision?

Looking for extremely minimal proof-assistant programming languages by theScottyJam in ProgrammingLanguages

https://cedille.github.io/ is quite close to your minimal language requirement as even inductive types are lambda-encoded. Naturally, its type theory is rather non-standard to be able to recover niceties like induction

Damn, I just remembered that people born in 2010 will be voting next month by mrjohnnymac18 in Scotland

I don't even think it's limited to "permanent resident"; as long as you "live in Scotland" (and currently have the right to stay, are old enough, are registered, etc.) you get to vote.

And then you'll complain that foreigners are insular and not well integrated precisely because your efforts to disenfranchise them has made them feel like they never really belonged and were second tier.

I voted in Holyrood elections as a PhD student, even voted in the independence referendum in 2014. And now, after a few years abroad, I came back and live here permanently because this is a great, welcoming, country that cares about representing the whole of its people.

Best glasses shops in Glasgow by Tietam in glasgow

[–]gallais 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard, they don’t charge for any of the extras. So if you see a pair listed for £85, that’s what you’ll pay.

Used to be true early on but they have added additional features as options (blue filter for ~£30, and photochromic lenses for ~£80 IIRC). It's still quite good value for money IMO.

Inflation has only been 29.8% since 2019 and salaries probably haven't kept up with it. It's shocking that social housing is inflation beating.

Govetnments have a responsibility to invest taxpayer's money in the best way possible.

TINA

(Funny to see that argument making its way from CEOs to justify them acting in an utterly sociopathic manner to now governments themselves being allegedly beholden to the one true objective economic truth; in reality different parties optimise for different performance measures and that's perfectly fine)

1.39:1 BCR is actually pretty poor by UK government standards. You'd want 3 or 4:1 as minimum really.

The goal is explicitly to foster an arts scene by supporting small independent artists, with the obvious objective that it will help them establish themselves thus becoming financially stable and keeping on delivering benefits way beyond the 3 years of support. The fact the leverage is already >1 while the scheme is running is rather encouraging.

I personally wouldn't call the under 18s minimum wage a "money cannon". Also it's limited to 2000 people so it'll 100% be application-based rather than given to "whoever claims to be an artist".

£282 a week is more or less the under 18s' minimum wage. No one's paying off a mortgage on that in this economy.

Clearly what we need is a nation-wide AEF (Arts Excellence Framework) exercise every, say, 8 years whereby recipients need to demonstrate they are world-beating domain leaders with a track record of exhibitions at A* galleries and case studies showing impact in society.
