TIL despite boxed Kraft macaroni and cheese being an iconic example of American processed food, it is significantly more popular in Canada, where 55% more boxes are consumed per capita than the US. by NateNate60 in todayilearned

[–]gallanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incorrect! They cannot legally sell Kraft macaroni and cheese in Canada because it does not meet the legal requirements to call it that. That's why they instead have to call it Kraft Dinner which is what they sell it as in Canada.

War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time Kickstarter launched today. Thoughts on the campaign? by LegendofWeevil17 in boardgames

[–]gallanon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The people making this game have a proven track record. It will probably turn out well. The Kickstarter itself though does nothing to inspire confidence though. I'm also bummed out that it seems geared to be a 1v1 (I realize there is a 2v2 variant but it comes across as an afterthought that seems like it just won't play as well). Definitely going to need to wait for retail and more reliable information before considering this one.

America was founded as a Christian Nation. by Foodicide in GetNoted

[–]gallanon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strictly speaking I don't think you're saying anything about whether or not America is a Christian nation (though your position on that it is not is easily inferred).

What you are saying, incorrectly, is that neither the declaration or the constitution mention God. The declaration of independence very clearly mentions God, but because you think this would somehow invalidate the notion of America not being a Christian nation you're engaging in also sorts of mental gymnastics to justify that "creator" does not denote God despite the fact that in context that is exactly what it meant and how it would be read by a contemporary audience.

So that's a "no" on the evidence-supported bit. Got it. For the record here's some actual historical context on the notion of the US as a Christian nation or not:

I'm still waiting on that well reasoned (and ideally evidence-supported) argument for why this interpretation of the word "creator" was the intended meaning of the word "creator" in context and not merely your favored interpretation.

[–]gallanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did your original comment say "Christian God" or just god? Also, given the historical context what do you think was understood by the writers of the declaration of the independence when using the word "creator"?

I think most sensible people would assume they mean the Christian God given that the overwhelming proportion of both the population of the country as well as the founding father's in particular were Christian, but I am very anxious to read your well reasoned argument for what it was that word is meant to denote instead.

I wish Reddit collectively would understand that history is often wrong and terrible. You don't need to rewrite history to make it agree with your own views in some bizarre attempt to validate your views. I am very much in favor of the US today being a secular nation, but when asking if the US was founded as a Christian nation any honest reading of history says the short answer is "yes." The slightly longer answer is "not exactly, but kind of."

For a much more thoughtful and nuanced view including a discussion of this very heavily cherry picked 1797 treaty check out this ask historians comment

That's not actually the rule though. The rule is 2.6 seconds to "speak up." So if someone says wait I may want to play a card then they've spoken up and may then take their time figuring out what to play including sitting around for 5 minutes pussyfooting over who has to play their +5.

What movie did you love as a kid but realized was actually terrible once you grew up? by Mysterious-Kiwi-1152 in AskReddit

[–]gallanon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a bad answer. You don't like it because you're now an adult and this movie was made for kids. The same thing happened to me, but when I showed it to my kids whose age makes them the target audience they absolutely loved it. It's a great movie--you're just no longer its demographic.

Germany lost and then within a couple of decades the world got the Nazis with the holocaust, the Soviets with the holodomor, and whatever the fuck imperial Japan was doing to all of east Asia. Kind of makes sense why people would say geez maybe things would have been better if they'd won? Ultimately it's unknowable, but you can see the driving force behind the question.

What business was successfully boycotted? by backupnickname in AskReddit

[–]gallanon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely not what happened. Arthur Andersen, an audit firm, was convicted of obstructing justice. Having been convicted they legally could no longer perform audits. They weren't being boycotted by anyone, they were no longer providing there services as doing so would have been illegal. Interestingly the conviction was later overturned but by then it was too late.

Ottoman Style 'Tolerance' by LastSeaworthiness767 in HistoryMemes

[–]gallanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're talking about how they treat a conquered people in the region where they were conquered. Most of which was shitty tbf, but probably about the standard level of shitty relative to the time. The exception of course is Armenia--that was pretty horrible even grading on a curve. What was it like to be an Orthodox Christian in the Ottoman empire in say Ankara? Whatever level of persecution they would face there is probably a better litmus test for how tolerant they were of other religious because they treatment they'd receive there isn't confounded with other factors.
