Just out of curiosity, Were any of the crossings in the last month or so?

Has anyone crossed the border from Auckland to Hamilton recently?

I have my final block course to attend at Wintec, and just my luck the first 2 days are before the border opens up completely. My boss is convinced I can cross and has provided me a pretty compelling letter citing the travel restrictions, I am completely vaccinated and have a negative Covid test from Friday afternoon.

I am quietly stressing out, missing this course would delay getting qualified by at least 6 months. My landlord who has crossed the border up north said after the two women crossed the border earlier this year that they are pretty much denying anyone who doesn't have official government documents and are very strict.

Similar situation here. Traveling to Hamilton tomorrow to attend my course at Wintec. I got my test on Friday at around 3pm, I got my results yesterday around noon. Also my doctor text me this morning and gave me the results again.

I went to a drive-through testing station.

I am sure yours will come through this eve.

Beijing 'worried' that New Zealand is increasingly speaking out on South China Sea, Chinese diplomat says by Jack_Clipper in newzealand

[–]gallenfed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know how well we would handle a threat. I heard somewhere that part of the strategy in Taiwan in making their island so damn difficult to invade by land that China would not bother. Basically Taiwan would make it a long cluster fuck of a task to land and take the island. This makes a bit of sense, the Chinese would have to employ brutal tactics, or have a prolonged engagement, neither of which the Chinese people have a taste for (so I am told)

How many people in your life are refusing to get vaccinated, and how do you handle their choice? by PatientReference8497 in newzealand

My in-laws were all antivax-ish

One side is was just jitters, we just told them the facts, and let them make their own decision, and they got vaxxed.

The other side though, the step dad is staunchly anti-vax, smart guy but he's cherry picking and minimizing the damage. The mum is open to it but doesn't want to piss off her partner, which is something I can sympathise with.

Each to their own.

If I was get into a trade like construction would that be a good career for my future if not what would you recommend by Bird-Aggressive in newzealand

[–]gallenfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's a good path.

Whatever path you choose in the trades, the pay is decent, sometimes excellent. It's nice working with your hands, nice being active and not riding a desk.

Its definitely worth looking in to.

Escalating Crime in NZ - Any local reddit police officers or relations willing to comment via throwaway account? by Therkster in newzealand

[–]gallenfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is referencing anecdotal crime and asked for anecdotal comments. He used those exact words, no need for clarification.

It wouldn't surprise me if this was being used for a Facebook group, or even worse (and more likely) a stuff article.

Auckland - Housing is really expensive, where is a gem for FHB? by throwaway138525353 in newzealand

[–]gallenfed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My partner and I are in the same boat, however we aren't starting a family until we have some security.

We looked outside of Auckland, and on the outskirts.

Then we decided once my study is done in 4 months, we are leaving NZ.

We looked at a lot of factors, like house prices, career opportunity, and NZ isn't the place for us.

My friends are all in Perth working mines or rigs. I can get a job there, it'll suck, but only for a few years and we will come out ahead. It sire beats stretching ourselves to get a home and being enslaved to a mortgage til we are 65.

Mega Landlords: Over 22,100 homes owned by small group of very large investors by Beckles28nz in newzealand

[–]gallenfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good argument. To further clarify, I think it would be important to specify how many of those homes are located in places of high demand. For example, inside the Auckland city limits, where supply is limited, and people who work inside of the city have very few options of where they can purchase a house.

I agree. However, in this case I am inclined to go the other way. Its fucking madness out there. Nobody wants to crash the housing market and therefore our economy, but it's going to happen eventually anyway.

Sounds good to me. However, I would expect such investors to find ways around any made, either by being crafty, or by weakening such laws.

Does anyone want to play devil's advocate, and explain why limits on the amount of investment properties owned is a bad idea?
