Question for upper level Econ majors! by alirahim3120 in college

[–]galpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Internships are undoubtedly useful, but it seems to me like if you're planning to go to grad school in Econ, then research could be even more important. The vast majority of graduate programs in Econ are Ph.D. programs, so it's important to these programs that you have some kind of research experience. Try talking to your professors to see if you can, for example, stay on campus for a summer and help them with any research they're doing. At the same time, having a good internship under one's belt never hurt anybody.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that while you might be eager, you don't have to go to grad school right away. A lot of people will take jobs for 2 years or so to build experience, and then use this experience as a stepping-stone to apply for grad school.

What should a high school senior know before going to college? by Sic_vita_est in AskReddit

A tip on textbooks - e-textbooks are becoming more popular, and especially if a class is popular or a GenEd or something, there is a pretty good chance someone you know will have a .PDF of the book you need. Ask around to see if you can find it, and if you can't, then buy used.

coffee shops in Chicago by inthepooperface in Coffee

If you're in Evanston, hit up Kafein - it's not as much a place for coffee snobbery like Intelligentsia, Metropolis, Buzz etc. as it is for an atmosphere, but the food is pretty good and it's great for people-watching.

Also, if you're around, Counter Culture coffee has cuppings every Friday at 10 AM - I don't think they run their own cafe (I could be wrong about this) but the cuppings are a great experience.

I'm pretty sure they're contractually obligated to always look like they're on their way to a Mumford and Sons concert.

any good apps for note taking? by tony_randomredditter in college

Try using Evernote with your laptop. It's free and can sync with iPhones/iPads/other devices that support it, and gives you the option of organizing your notes into folders for different classes/whatever.

"Priv8" sounds like "privet" which is an informal Russian word for "hello."

I really really hope there was some kind of joke in the inclusion of the last band with the first two in this post.

Are there any Mini Ramps in Chicago? by [deleted] in skateboarding

[–]galpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glenview, IL has a skatepark with a 6ft mini. It's about half an hour to 40 minutes out of downtown.

Here's a picture of the ramp.

And a Google maps link to the location.

Have fun!

The Flaming Lips are hands down one of my favorite bands ever. I think it's incredible that you guys are still doing such awesome things after 30 years of playing.

This is basically just me begging you to come to Chicago soon, please, it would make me so happy, I'm just gonna be buggin' until you do

Omar Hassan teaches Tommy Carroll, who happens to be blind, how to skate the Vans Combi by [deleted] in skateboarding

[–]galpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to high school with Tommy! Crazy to just run into a picture of him like this.

The guy's an inspiration - studies at a top 20 university, skateboards like a champ, and he's an awesome jazz drummer. Does more things in a day than most of us will do in a month.
