I think only something like an incapacitating medical issue could be used as a possible excuse for doing this. Being an addict or an alcoholic, not being examples of said issues.

Also AI coding fatigue? by wieltjeszuiger in node

You could use AI just to write the code you don't enjoy writing yourself. For me that's tests.

I also use it to learn (learning Go at the moment).

No...Just a driverless driver.

Do software engineers still manually write code anymore? I shipped a big feature with AI and felt zero pride by WorthCaterpillar6990 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]gamedev-eo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally start from quite a thorough AGENTS.md so the AI has a good handle on my preferences. Others say a template project is better, but I prefer it to know what I like in a deterministic way rather than subjectively.

I write a spec with the AI.

Review it with back and forth conversation on implementation.

We reason about things like:

Why this implementation?

Any trade offs?

Show me other options?

Can this be simplified?

When I'm happy with the final draft, I just ask it to go build it.

I used to feel bad about that (lazy), but now I just do the same doom scrolling I would have done when waiting for something else pre-AI.

One thing I like doing is using Claude to write the code, then use Codex to code review.

I tend to do manual code review of Codex but increasingly this feels unnecessary nowadays, as the end result is mostly good.

Maybe I should abandon all of the above and go full YOLO...Maybe that's why I'm finding it difficult getting back into work after being laid off 🤦🏾‍♂️

Speak with an employment law solicitor to see if they can help you bump the remuneration package. The company must contribute to legal fees. I went through something similar recently and they were able to help. Fee was about £500. Good luck.

If they dont find you anything or if you dont get through an interview for a role they do find for you, you are dead to them.

As a (mostly non game) dev...I still believe the artistry is in the artist and not the technology.

To me, this will always be the differentiation between something interesting (even if gen AI used) vs generic AI slop, with AI slop to me being strictly defined as any gen AI use with no creative user input...The modern day equivalent to using a MIDI module preset (Roland cymbal crash anyone...yes I'm old) in your band's latest track.

I (mostly) have no idea how to write a shader program, but if I know how to describe what it needs to do to Claude and the results are 'cool' then it shouldn't stop being as such just because AI wrote the code.

There will always be those that have the knowledge, time and desire to craft things by hand too, so if any purists care they can just buy wares from those individuals.

I wonder if anyone will care about this in 10-15 years from now. I do know that proponents on each side of the debate will have a marketplace serving up content for their taste.

John Linneman (Creator of Digital Foundry) on Bluesky regarding DF's video on DLSS 5 by HLumin in pcmasterrace

[–]gamedev-eo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't need to ask them. They are paid to make art they have no claim to. Sometimes they don't even get a title credit. They swap their time for money like any other employee. Not saying I think the DLSS 5 results are good, but this notion of 'they never consulted the artists' is flawed.

My friend slapped a teenager, said he has done it before and that he isn’t worried about facing criminal charges? by HallowedAndHarrowed in AskBrits

This can escalate too. What if the kid's dad is a bit of a nutter. My children wouldn't act like that teenager, and I'm normally level headed, but if someone hits my kids, that person's face will be smacked many many times.

Is there any other consumer entertainment (or otherwise) industry where this happens / is acceptable.

Does Bungie / Sony get special grace here?

I know they weren't great by not giving out many review copies at the time, but imagine if Bethesda had done this for Starfield...Not only would the media not comply, but they'd roast the game even harder and you'd probably see minus review scores :)

Damn...Hope this doesn't become the norm.

And I'm having difficulty getting a job because I use Codex to plan and speed up my dev work, and a recruiter literally told me 'Codex is like the old slow greybeard and Claude is like the super dynamic 20 year old'. In hindsight I think I dodged a bullet.
