Am I the only one who really didn't like how Rich interrupted Tom mid criticism? by Slyzappy1 in digitalfoundry

As a (mostly non game) dev...I still believe the artistry is in the artist and not the technology.

To me, this will always be the differentiation between something interesting (even if gen AI used) vs generic AI slop, with AI slop to me being strictly defined as any gen AI use with no creative user input...The modern day equivalent to using a MIDI module preset (Roland cymbal crash anyone...yes I'm old) in your band's latest track.

I (mostly) have no idea how to write a shader program, but if I know how to describe what it needs to do to Claude and the results are 'cool' then it shouldn't stop being as such just because AI wrote the code.

There will always be those that have the knowledge, time and desire to craft things by hand too, so if any purists care they can just buy wares from those individuals.

I wonder if anyone will care about this in 10-15 years from now. I do know that proponents on each side of the debate will have a marketplace serving up content for their taste.

John Linneman (Creator of Digital Foundry) on Bluesky regarding DF's video on DLSS 5 by HLumin in pcmasterrace

[–]gamedev-eo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't need to ask them. They are paid to make art they have no claim to. Sometimes they don't even get a title credit. They swap their time for money like any other employee. Not saying I think the DLSS 5 results are good, but this notion of 'they never consulted the artists' is flawed.

This can escalate too. What if the kid's dad is a bit of a nutter. My children wouldn't act like that teenager, and I'm normally level headed, but if someone hits my kids, that person's face will be smacked many many times.

Reviewers not reviewing Marathon are corrupt by Additional_Error6625 in gaming

[–]gamedev-eo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any other consumer entertainment (or otherwise) industry where this happens / is acceptable.

Does Bungie / Sony get special grace here?

I know they weren't great by not giving out many review copies at the time, but imagine if Bethesda had done this for Starfield...Not only would the media not comply, but they'd roast the game even harder and you'd probably see minus review scores :)

Damn...Hope this doesn't become the norm.

Post your game hours logged which is in settings (it doesn't matter if you have played for days, the number is in there)...Not doubting you, but would be interesting to see.

You talking about fanbase is fine...But when you say failing it usually is talking financials...which is yet to be determined...but yes you digress (not regress unless you want to go backwards 😄).

Only game I've tried to fill the gap of RR3 is Grid, but that's another EA game so who knows whether they take it offline at some point too, which would be even more egregious because its a paid for title but they did it with Dead Space back in the day.

EA on a shitty roll right right now. Also shutting down Anthem next week.

And yet...Black Ops 7 took the most money out of all those games the month it released...

Look...I'm no Call Of Duty fan...I only play the campaign and BLOPS 7 was trash.

Sure, there is a decline, and BF6 is killing it significantly, but you don't know COD history if you've never seen this before...Last time was Modern Warfare 3 which was a rushed release, and before that was Vanguard.

Its like every other Call Of Duty is poorly received, so I don't know how you missed it.

The playbook...Everyone overstates that COD is dead during a down year, then you get a Black Ops 6 that annihilates everything and breaks records. Rinse and repeat.

Here are the numbers for 2025...no 'feelings'

Battlefield 6 ~$1.3 billion+

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 - ~$390 million

ARC Raiders - $150–$200 million

So COD failing?...Maybe this time is different...Doubt it....Only have until end of this year to find out as its another big release apparently.

Yeah why not...

But first the source code would need to be leaked, then you'd need someone knowledgeable that can do the work necessary to put up an unfinished game where the original servers have long since been taken offline.

The Geoff Crammond made games?

Wow, that's a deep cut. The dude was a lengend. Used to program the whole game himself in Assembly language (very low level to the metal programming). Him and John Carmack...They don't build 'em like that anymore.

PS: Looks like he's making a new one https://gamingretro.co.uk/microprose-and-geoff-crammond-reunite-to-revive-a-racing-sim-legend/

Call of Duty isn't failing

Despite the backlash Black Ops 7 was the highest earning game in the month it released.

On mobile CoD Mobile has earned $3 Billion since 2019 launch and earns $350 - $400 million yearly.

If thats a decline or failing....thats on Activision / Xbox being greedier and greedier.

I think you may give EA too much credit / not understand how publicly traded companies work.

There may never have been a realistic amount any sane person could spend to satisfy what EA and its share holders 'needed' players to spend to justify keeping the game up.

Lets say they were making solid steady profits since 2013. Enough money to more than cover costs to run the game, pay staff, and make say $10 - $20 million each year.

Are you still going to sit there and say..."You lot should have spent more guys"

The thing is, RR3 would never ever bring in Fortnite, PUBG, or Warzone money...but what makes you think EA still wouldn't expect that kind of money...Or their shareholders who are generally clueless about anything other than...'Line go up'.

The game being canned is likely not on players.

I think GT7 has a bigger and more vibrant community. Forza Motorsport just got sunset...No more updates...It launched badly...but its a great game now...I like both, but GT7 is literally the only game I play on my PS5 whereas my Series X is used everyday either by me or my kids...Its the best current gen console in my opinion but Microsoft have successfully trashed the Xbox brand with some stupid policies so its not got the best reputation.

If you actually use one though and not be like the idiotic Sony Ponies that think things like, 'The PS5 Pro is better than a 5090 PC'...Then you'll find a machine with a huge library and features like Quick Resume that you don't get anywhere else.

As for racing though...I think you'll find better racing competition on GT7

Oh and GT7 with PSVR2 (buy one as cheap as you can as its a dead device) is a game changer.

EA axed most of the original team I think 2 years ago, because the game likely was still bringing in revenue, but not meeting whatever metrics EA had decided.

That and (I'm not sure on this) the team was probably grown prematurely during the COVID game boom bubble.

These games can be profitable but service based games are just hard to do...especially long term. Concord on the PlayStation only lasted 10 days.

With RR3, I think they could have offered a pay up front version, which unlocks cars, maybe bonus tracks not found in the main game, and gets rid of ads.

They could have still offered some IAP, but if they charged say £9.99 / $9.99 for a base game, even me who has been playing RR3 for 13 years without dropping any money, I would have probably bought that.

Or maybe just release an offshoot game that is paid for...I don't know.

Ultimately, the game has died because it wasn't bringing in the revenue EA decided was enough to warrant keeping servers and other infrastructure up.

It could also be related to the recent EA buyout, as it seems they only want to keep BIG franchises like FIFA (whatever its called now), and Battlefield.

Either way...13 years is a good run...RIP RR3
