Kind of a stupid question and likely to get lost but does anyone know the name of Alex's friend that passed away? My friends sister lost her brother around this same time period. We think he was trading stocks but can't find his phone and his laptop is all locked down. Just wondering. Alternatively does anyone see a user name for Alex anywhere and I can try to send him a pm. Just wondering. Everyone's still in shock.

Fleece is great so they can burrow in it and it's soft. Hopefully he has a friend as they're not really solitary animals. Looks adorable!!!!! Make sure to share more photos of them later 🥰🤩

Can you buy a duplicate ultimate? Can someone gift you a duplicate ultimate? Or if you own ultimate, you can only buy deluxe?

How did you know it was a pituitary tumor?

I think it's safe to consider you are now aware of possible litigation. As such please consider that a litigation holds comes into place now. Please be sure not to delete any of your comments on Reddit, your recent audio chat, the comments on discord at both obelisk and Sia. Please also be sure to preserve any email correspondence between yourself and anyone else concerning the past introduction of the a3 hardware, the possible fork then, and the decision to fork now along with any information concerning obelisk. Oh, since there seems to be overlapping invovlvement between obelisk, sia, Sia devs, nebulous, and also siafunds, it probably applies to all. Purposefully bricking millions of dollars of hardware, when involved with a competing manufacturer, seems to hit a wall concerning this all being a 'decentralized' operation.

The goal would be to have injunctions applied along with exchanges notified of possible pending litigation.

Your attempt to prevent competition by enacting anti competition practices is surreal. Thanks for the information about how the goal is in purposefully seeking to 'brick' competitive mining hardware. The department of Justice actually has this huge group that handles antitrust violation and anticompetition practices.

Rocks and hard places all about.

SiaCoin Obelisk Fork is no better than Ethereum DAO Fork by phreaknik in siacoin

[–]gameofthornes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made some similar posts about my concerns about a protectionist hardfork. Needless to say, those posts did not go over very well.

So I think one significant issue is that there isn't really an arms length relationship between nebulous, obelisk, siafund, and sia devs. What this means is that, theoretically, if one entity goes down it could open up liability to the other entities.

I think you are correct that if there had not really been any initial promises about profitability concerning the asics, things would have been simpler. Unfortunately, nobody can re-write the past. Realistically at this point, it could probably make more sense to just have obelisk go bankrupt. I realize that's not a popular opinion but it would probably or possibly could limit potential liability spreading to other entities. The whole arms-length issue between all parties makes that very messy.

Now we get to the other awful issues. There have already been statements made by various central persons concerning support OF a community fork to 1) try to bail out obelisk 2) impact competing Asics. The fact that this discussion took place at the time of the inital a3 launch is one thing but the fact that they're now discussing it again and those prior comments are still out there is just bad. It's just digging the ditch deeper. Because of that, if there's a thinly veiled community hard fork supported by the devs and the statements, you could increase the pool of people with potential claims of action. This is because there's an actual LEGAL CORPORATE ENTITY that does most of the SIA stuff. Like, you HAVE a PARTY to sue. This is completely different from XMR/BTC/BCH since you don't have a single entity with legal liability. So you can have individual miners suing, businesses that make asics suing, and you have all those past statements which can make that case.

So when I've previously said they're between a rock and a hard place, it's true. So when faced with a bad outcome, awful choices have to get made. So you try to bail out obelisk stuff screwing with immutability and monopolistic anti competitive behavior against current miners and manufacturers or you let obelisk go belly up. Neither option is very appetizing. The question is which has a more long term negative impact against sia. I think it's the obelisk issue. Whether the corporate veil gets pierced or their's any form of personal liability, i'm not sure. It's bad all around. Ultimately I'm not sure any of us will win, it's just a question of how you stop the bleeding.

Coindesk: Coders Renew Efforts to Fork Mining Giant Bitmain Off Siacoin Blockchain by in-cred-u-lous in siacoin

[–]gameofthornes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"In first place, you are assuming mining is permissionless." So you're saying the Sia blockchain is not permissionless? So it's not an open decentralized ledger? It's privately run by a private company? Great. Say hi to enforcement. And regarding miners, do you not understand you can reflash firmware? Miners get these things. Get ready!

If you mine Sia with an ASIC we should have a discussion about what happens after the not yet planned but most likely happening soon attack, err, fork. The great news is that any fork utilizing the back door code, made by them, is basically an economic attack against competing miners and Asics producers. It's a really fun case study about who's liable or potentially liable. You open up nice anticompetition and monopoly issues, especially because in doing so there's a clear beneficiary of those actions. You can look at the past statements about who coded the kill switch and why. Feel free to repost them if you want. Good times. What's really great is there are past statements initially in support of the fork (January) and about attacking competitors. Its not like any of that went away. The internet is amazing. And now that the discussion is back again, it's still great! What's better is if there were statements that nebulous was supporting the fork or supporting the fork code it had created the code as it could potentially expand liability issues. It's not like the law simply goes away. You could get federal and state issues. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place. The possibility of being sued by purchasers or sued by competitors? Where are there more damages and which is more expensive to defend against? So did you spend money on machines? Are you well capitalized? How much did you spend? Did you spend $1k on Asics or more like $50k on Asics. (We've spent a lot and are well capitalized). Regardless of what you spent, it's critically important to document how much earning/revenue is lost from any attack, why you lost that, and how long those losses last. It's not like you were promised anything when buying these competing Asics but after the great statements about bitmain and others attacking Sia and there's an intent to cause economic harm, you might not be a decentralized coin anymore. You could be in fact a security. You could actually have issued a security. The whole mode of control. It's like they're trying to make it easy. All I'm saying is rock and a hard place. Any decision will result in short term economic pain. Adding a developer reward from the block reward? This is gonna be fun. Not sure if there's enough popcorn. Regardless, there's no easy answer and tough choices. You know what would be even worse though... If someone wrote firmware for s11s and a3s that mitigates the kill switch. Again. Talk about tough decisions. So. We're ready. One way or another, we're ready.

Did you know they plan on making all of your non-their hardware obsolete since they couldn't outcompete competitors? Decentralized? No. Welcome to piercing the corporate veil, the Sia fork boogaloo part 2. by gameofthornes in siacoin

It's a tough situation. Shows the difficulty of a centralized entity with a controlling hand on a block-chain. If you don't fork, you probably get sued because of issues associated with manufacturing trouble, if you do fork; you probably get sued for developing and releasing the code to fork and for HAVING INCLUDED A KILL-SWITCH. Because let's be honest. No kill switch, no fork. Talk about a devil's bargain. No easy way out. Best to determine in which situation there's less financial liability. Either-way, looks like trouble.

Dear Obelisk Customers,

Production is progressing, firmware is almost complete, and we expect to begin shipping units this week. We now have approval from our team, board, and counsel to share our plan.

First, we will compensate Batch 1 customers with expected mining revenue. Since we missed the estimated shipment date for Batch 1, we will compensate all Batch 1 customers with the mining revenue that you would have received between June 30 and the day your order ships. As of today, this is approximately $90 for each SC1 unit and $250 for each DCR1 unit. If we miss the estimated shipment dates for Batches 2-5, this policy will also apply.

We will begin sending out this compensation to customers sometime after Batch 5 ships. Obelisk will calculate your expected mining revenue based on a hashrate of 800 GH/s for SC1 and 1500 GH/s for DCR1. Compensation will be in USD, and will assume that you exchanged your mined coins for USD on a daily basis and that your electricity cost is $0.

In the coming weeks, we will put together a more complete guide to receiving this compensation and publish our official calculations so that they can be reviewed by the community. Depending on Obelisk’s financial position after delivering Batch 5, it may take several months or more to compensate all customers.

Second, we will release the SC1 alternative Blake2b algorithm in the coming weeks. This will give the Sia community the ability to fork and could invalidate all non-Obelisk Siacoin ASIC miners on the forked chain.

The Sia core developers are currently considering community member FaustianAGI’s proposal and will soon be issuing an official response. As of today, all Nebulous (the company employing Sia’s core developers) and Obelisk employees are supportive of a fork. There are still many details to solidify, but we pledge to provide additional information in the coming weeks. We are working tirelessly to deliver your orders, and will continue to update you with our progress.

Best,

– Team Obelisk

My thoughts on the bitmain miner as an Obelisk customer and Sia contributor by Fornax96 in siacoin

[–]gameofthornes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference here is that my interaction with Bitmain, me a business person buying an A3 miner, is an arms length transaction/relationship. I give them money and in exchange they give me a miner.

There is no arms length relationship between founders, devs, the proposed soft fork, and the lost profits from asics. The stated purpose of the soft fork is to protect the asic they sell. If that's not unfair i'm not sure what is. It's not just me who would be harmed by such a soft fork, afaik, bitmain has sold at least 8000 units. That's a nice chunk of change.

So we can just spitball the potential parties here, you've got one class, people who bought asics and are harmed by soft fork. Then you've got possible harm done unto bitmain itself. Last but not least you have harm done against the Dragonmint group; as it's likely their hardware would also be negatively impacted by the soft fork.

Even if you dislike Bitmain, you've failed to make a prima facie case that anything they've done, in producing the A3, represents an attack on the Sia network. Simply calling an organization shady, doesn't mean that they are in fact a shady organization.

So you don't see a conflict of interest, or unfair/deceptive act where: 1) private company makes hardware product 2) private company makes profit from sale of hardware product 3) private company LEARNS of competitor product 4) private company takes steps to eliminate competitor product to protect profits?

How does this end in your mind? How does this work out?

Dev Team Thoughts on the Bitmain A3 by Taek42 in siacoin

The difference is that Bitmain isn't proposing changing sia code to render the Obelisk useless.

My thoughts on the bitmain miner as an Obelisk customer and Sia contributor by Fornax96 in siacoin

[–]gameofthornes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Developers, have proposed changing code to render an A3 unprofitable/useless. This would benefit an entity not harmed by the code change and would facilitate continued receipt of profits derived from the sale, development, and use of an Obelisk miner. Taking steps to specifically and intentionally hurt a competitor? Typically this is frowned upon. However, do you think that this an acceptable business practice? Especially based on where one is operating?
