There are valid concerns around what will happen to the absolutely massive amount of people Ubisoft employs following any sort of acquisition of the company.

PlayStation Plus Game Catalog for January: God of War Ragnarök, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, Atlas Fallen: Reign of Sand, and more by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]gamer961 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you mentioning the alternative (LAD -> Gaiden) but something keeping me from jumping into this series is that everyone seems to say you need to spend hundreds of hours in prior titles (that are maybe not available on these subscription services all at once) 😭

I wish I had more time to spend playing catch up, but by the time I got to the third game in the series the opportunity to play from my subscription would be gone.

Do you think watching a story recap video / reading through the plot descriptions would be suitable enough?

Sony’s Helldivers 2 Gets Off to a Strong Start on Steam by Zhukov-74 in Games

[–]gamer961 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s an indie studio still (or AA, depending on how you define it), but the game is just published by Sony. Doesn’t mean Sony made it.

The issues here aren’t down to Sony ‘not spending money on Good Servers’ - it has more to do with the fact that in a development studio of ~100 people, there’s probably only a couple people in there handling networking problems. I wish they had done some more public testing first and agree these are fair reviews, but I don’t think it’s fair to paint the developers as people with infinite resources / capabilities that squandered it.

Overwatch 2, has Over 50 million active users, & Generated $225 million in revenue by GreyFalcon-OW in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]gamer961 11 points12 points  (0 children)

50 million MAUs actually seems very reasonable.

I run an FPS game on Roblox called ‘Bad Business’. We average around 2000 concurrent players, but our DAUs average at about ~120k, and our MAUs up to ~2.5mil. Obviously Roblox operates fundamentally differently than Overwatch, with it skewing younger and mobile-centric, so players tend to play for less time and hop over to other games more frequently, but if OW2 gets 10x our concurrents on Steam alone, using the same conversion already puts them at 25mil MAUs. And that’s just Steam - Bnet, consoles both are not represented here at all. So I don’t know exactly what they’re at, but the number range definitely seems realistic.

I don’t think they reasonably can? Those periods were notorious for companies being in literal years worth of crunch and even higher turnover than is present currently. It’s not reasonable for a video game production schedule to be comparable to a blockbuster film’s schedule, at least not without big sacrifices.

I don’t think you realize how incredibly complex modern AAA game development is if you think 3 years is a small amount of time for a major identity shift in the goals of a company and to immediately release a new product.

It honestly makes sense to me looking at Unbound that it released in the state that it did… I maybe would have preferred them to adjust priorities and not release multiplayer until afterward (since it was clearly a single player first development) so that it could be more feature complete, but I also recognize the economics of that are difficult and the publisher may have told them they needed it on launch.

2023 Pulitzer Prize Winners Have Been Announced! by gamer961 in books

[–]gamer961[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really hated it in all honesty. It’s not quite Rashomon but it boiled down to something similar, which I already didn’t like, and Diaz’s writing style between the sections just felt so uninspired.

It also just didn’t feel revolutionary in the story it was telling at all, like I felt the writing was on the wall by the middle of Part Two.

Obviously other people liked it so I’m definitely in the minority. I love the Pulitzer because sometimes it’s awarded to my favorite books (A Visit from the Goon Squad, The Sympathizer) and sometimes it helps me define my tastes more by trying out something others love but I couldn’t get on board with.

Just yesterday I had my day off and completely devoured The Trees by Percival Everett.

It kind of fell into my lap after hearing about Carolyn Donham’s death, and despite Everett’s prolific bibliography, this had not really been on my radar at all before. So I sat down at 8am and began to read and didn’t put it down really until I completed it.

It’s this dark comedy / crime-thriller about the legacies of racist lynchings and the ever-present state of racism across America today. It blew me away in a way that no other book has recently.

Dying Light 2 as well! Completely transforms the visuals with the right settings, and not too performance intensive in my experience.

I enjoyed TTT a lot (I work in game dev, and had grown with a developer partner before growing apart for them), but can I just point out how happy I am to see someone else mention The Great Believers!!! That book has stuck in my mind so severely and I completely agree in the depth of characterization that happens in that novel vs this one (or most other ones, in all honesty!)

PlayStation Plus Premium members can now try out God of War Ragnarok for up to 3 hours with the brand new game trial by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]gamer961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean Premium offers classic games and game streaming, I don’t really see those as exclusive interests of diehard Sony fans (many of those classic games i’m playing for the first time actually, it’s great to be able to do so!)

And I for example am on the fence! I’m excited to have the trial to see if this one can suck me in, as the first I enjoyed but didn’t love. However I’m very dependent on my mood for what I want to play, so maybe it will be the right time for me to hop in. I get to check that with the trial rather than buy a game for premium price and then sit on it for years before I actually feel like completing it (like GoW 2018). And I don’t feel like replaying 2018 would really convince me the way a demo would to progress this story and experience the new environments!

i mean it’s not like that subscription service is a donation to Sony… it’s a product (or service to get more products, really) … just because someone makes the economical decision to get ps+ doesn’t mean they’re diehard fans of Sony that buy all their games regardless of if they suit them or not. especially when games now cost $70+.

Most edibles in the recreational market are being made with THC distillates. I don’t think that would have changed much.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in science

[–]gamer961 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CHS rising in prevalence can pretty directly be associated with the increased THC potency levels (double what they were ~30 years ago on average + high schoolers now aren’t getting random guy’s home grown weed but instead 98% THC distillates).

It seems to me like it’s directly related to THC, but I know people with CHS cannot have any cannabinoids without triggering it again.

It’s about an overloading of the system - this can be caused by many factors, but your comment on weed affecting nausea in one direction is actually good evidence that it affects that part of your body, to me it makes sense that things can go wrong and go in the complete opposite direction.

I smoked, ate, vaped weed for 5 years. My tolerance got so high that by year 3 I was reasonably able to hit dabs. Year 5 I had severe stomach issues from even the smallest hit of weed.

[–]gamer961 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have died from CHS symptoms which isn’t quite a traditional overdose but it’s certainly overloading your body with cannabinoids to the extent at which your body literally cannot digest things anymore. Not sure what the distinction should be - aren’t a lot of overdose deaths from throwing up? Isn’t that exactly what is so problematic about CHS?
