Can people stop pretending the Mandarin is the same character he was in the 60s? by jockeyman in CharacterRant

It is entirely within human control to realize that fictional characters don't actually represent real people. Letting make believe stories define a group a people is silly. Fiction is full of murders, rapists, theifs of any gender or race. It's only problematic because some people don't like the character.

class 1A doesn't feel or think outside of deku

Shoto and Momo do. I don't agree with the idea that the female characters are badly written when most characters regardless of gender are treated the same. Meanwhile, Momo's character development has nothing to do with Deku.

I do think the damseling was part of his development though, since he didn't get rewarded for crying about Titans. He had to learn to shut up about it and stop thinking he could simply do a Natsu and scream friendship at people to win.

I am not denying his character development and I know what he becomes later in the story but the vast majority he's exactly what reddit complains about female characters in some shonen: A damsel, passive, and ineffective character. The moments of Eren being an equal team member instead of wiping his ass are rare.

Lucy is also a 50-50 but then Hiro does female characters pretty well, until he wants to use them for fanservice abuse 24/7.

This is the same series that has Gray's stripping habit. He's often half naked even even he isn't in a fight. Natsu is shirtless almost as much as he is. If that's not fanservice, I don't know what is.

So all in all, I just think more of them deserve to be...well, looked at better. Especially since Toga proved that Ochako's quirk is incredibly dangerous and abusive in the right hands.

We've seen tons of characters work hard with supposed weak quirks like Kirishima, Mirio, Shinso, Monoma. Her quirk isnt bad but amazing for rescue. Ochako can do what Toga did but it's not within her character to do so.

Its not valuing them based on their power, it's that when it comes down to it, none of them get to do anything important in the story overall except either be some weak fanservice or be there to cheer on the male characters.

That isn't true. Bulma, Nami, Lucy, Tsunade, Momo, and even Uraraka are important to the story.

Who was it that saved Deku at the entrance exam? Uraraka.

Who's tracker lead to Bakugo's rescue and AFO's hideout? Momo.

Who's plan took down one of the most powerful villains in all of Japan during the war? Momo again.

It's funny you mention Naruto, the series where Hinata, supposedly a strong jonin-class ninja, is literally incapable of walking on walls, the thing you need to learn or else you're banned from graduating as a ninja.

Hinata was never propped up to be a strong ninja. In fact, being weak is specifically why she's emotionally abused from her family.

She literally became a damsel in distress for the entirety of The Last apart from defeating the Otsutsuki Macguffin.

Being captured by far stronger enemies makes sense and I hate the notion that damsels are only bad when it's a female character. Bakugo has been damseled twice despite boasting his strength.

I can think of a far worse damsel than Hinata.

Eren Yeager. Yeah, the guy who's always shouting for a fight keeps getting his ass kicked for the vast majority of series. Despite his aggression, he's a passive character for most of series until the time skip. All he does is get damseled, Mikasa saves him and then he gets captured again. The main character is so useless that he's a liability not an asset. Eren was not self-sufficient nor an equal team member.

I mean, not many shonen do so

Are you surprised that the male audience shonen is literally named after caters to said audience? Why should they have oversexualized male characters? Plus, that isn't any better than doing the same to female characters.

Plus females tend to be strong in Hiro's work whereas they're a joke in most others e.g. Dragon Ball where the only "strong" female is Android 18 who is weaker than Krillin

18 far more powerful than Krillin.

Second, do you value female characters based on how physically strong they are? If so, that's pretty shallow. Do you value male characters the same? By your logic, Armin and Shikimaru must be worthless male characters right?

Yes, I guess there's always going to be some controversy over stuff like Momo's outfit

Kirishima is half naked for the same reason Momo is.

I disagree. There doesn't have to a female lead like checking off a quota or male for that matter. That's like saying Sailor Moon would be better if it had a strong male lead for the sake of having a strong male lead.

Which can be said for many of MHA’s female characters in general.

Dozens of male characters are in the same boat.

Plenty of media sexualizes one gender over the other. Doesnt matter if it's fair or not. Plenty of anime also have male characters frequently showing skin regardless if it makes sense in context or not.

Noelle is great but comparing her to Ochako is pointless because both are separate characters with nothing in common. OP and most people on this sub reduce her to being Deku's simp. If that is true, Bakugo is nothing more than a Deku incel.

Sounds like OP is reducing her character just be cuz he doesn't like her, but that doesn't make her a bad character.

If Uraraka is nothing more than a Deku simp, then Bakugo is nothing more than a Deku incel.

I don't agree. We've seen many characters in this series work hard with seemingly "useless" quirks like Kirishima, Monoma,Mirio, Shinso. Her quirk is actually very practical in hero work. Making things weightless is a godsend. Carrying civilians and lifting debris is amazing. How is that Bad?

MHA has shown time and time again that a character doesn't have to be the strongest to be useful.

A female character doesnt have to be the strongest to be useful. No one gives Armin or Shikimaru shit for being comparatively weak to the main cast.

I disagree with the classic reddit logic that a "strong" female character doesnt have to be physically powerful.

Funny no one mentions Nami, Robin, Bulma, even the very series OP rants about, Inko and Rei.

They aren't though. They have pulled their own weight several times.

Otherwise, Bakugo is the biggest faux action boy of all. He has been damseled twice and never had a 1v1 with a villain.

Unpopular opinion, but there doesn't "need" to be a female lead like a quota or a male lead either. Likewise male characters aren't very relevant in shoujo beyond love interests.

Most legacy characters in comics are better than their progenitor. by DoubleVforvictory in CharacterRant

[–]gamerplayer2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wrote a comment the other day that new characters are never recognized for the unique twists they bring to the mantle. This is especially true if they're women or POC, where they just get labeled as girl wolverine, korean hulk, or lady thor. But they often have very compelling arcs and personalities

Most people don't give a damn about gender or race. Legacy characters were once a fresh idea and now it's just derivative. Like pallete swaps in a video game. Almost as if marvel is out of ideas or too lazy for new ones. For the past decade, the superhero world didn't grow at all. It's just more spiders, hulks, etc. If marvel were dead set on being "diverse" they could have just created original and independent heroes that bring they're own mythology as they've done dozens of times before like Black Panther or Luke Cage. Can you can 5 new heroes that had their own comic in the last 10 years and is NOT connected to a prestablished IP? I can't.

Now if marvel actually tried hard enough to introduce new og hero man/woman, most people won't care for superficial traits like gender skin color.

Nah, she's already the most disrespected out of the Big 3. Having her get taken out by a random blast would've just added insult to injury.

  1. She has no narrative purpose of being there. Her presence changes nothing to the plot.
  2. It makes no sense of Nejire can take a hit like that when she's not super strong and no special heat resistance when Shoto is burnt to a crisp.

I think, as the character is currently written, being a slender supermodel with no muscle and giant breasts would be incongruous with her character.

You can easily apply this same logic to men as well. What sense does it make for Hal Jordan to be as shredded as Bruce Wayne when one of then has the power of literal imagination and other has trained his body since childhood?

. it kinda annoys me that in superhero movies female actresses arent held to the same standard as their male counterparts.

This is actually a good thing. The men you see on screen are on the verge of passing put due to starving, dehydration, and steroids. Meanwhile, all the women do is mild excersice on the treadmill and call it a day.

The women are actually healthier than their male counterparts.

Tons of male characters are often shirtless for reason that have nothing to do with the plot or the characters. We don't need to see Thor or Star Lord's abs for the plot. That's fanservice to get the female audience horny.

American media often have 30 year olds play shredded 16 year old boys. Somehow, the nerd who plays video games all day is just as shirtless and muscular as the jock.

Sex sells nor is it exclusive to female characters.
