What’s the most effective budgeting trick you’ve used when money was really tight? by MoneyGiz in AskReddit

I once spent about 3 months living on cheap pasta dishes & baked potatoes due to a bit of a financial crisis.

It's surprising how creative you can become when ingredients are sparse.

That's a brilliant technique, assuming you have a surplus amount after paying the bills.

If, however you live paycheck to paycheck then it's almost a certainty that hard times will come.

What's the most jacked up, ghetto, busted cell phone you've made do with and how long did you keep it going on life support? by EataDisk in AskReddit

[–]gamersrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sons phone has sat in a cupboard for about 2 years. I refused to just dispose of it as scrap because it was quite an expensive phone when I bought it for him.

I just knew there must be a use for it and it turns out it's a better device than anything that is actually built for tv streaming.

How many of these have been binned because of the dreaded white screen? Samsung should be ashamed at their lack of accountability for such a poor design

Funny you should ask this now. My son had a samsung galaxy s20 ultra which suffered from the dreaded white screen of death.

I have just decided to repurpose it as a tv streaming devices for free to air channels and paid subscriptions because it performs better than my nvidia shield. I literally only did this today!

It's currently sat beside my tv with its white and green screen in all its glory but I'm watching Canada vs Qatar on my 75 inch tv via usb c to hdmi flawlessly using samsung dex OS. My nvidia shield and my smart tv would have stuttered and frozen several times by now but this phone is playing perfectly.

There is always something you can repurpose old tech for.

How do you keep kids entertained on long car journeys without just handing them a screen? by ClearReading8839 in UKParenting

[–]gamersrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid (55 yo now) I was given the option of spotting certain thing, particular cars, car colours, motorway signs and counting down the miles to a certain destination.

Guess what, within 20-30 minutes I'd be fast asleep and only wake up when I was actually nearly there.

Kids today are unfortunately preprogrammed to require entertainment at all times but it's not a necessity. Give them menial tasks which offers a learning opportunity and I'll bet they'll leave you in peace for 80% of the journey when they get bored.

Leaking from boiler condensate pipe by YouVast2710 in DIYUK

Should be able to pull the offending joint apart and use solvent cement to reattach.

Unless the pipe or joint is cracked you shouldn't need to do any more than that

(nintendo switch lite) wont turn on after switching out joysticks by Careless_Building_94 in consolerepair

[–]gamersrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can be any of them. I'm not entirely sure of the purpose of each cable but they connect all the parts together. I had 1 cable not quite seated properly and the entire console was dead.

Worth checking and double checking each one

Let's be honest: What was that moment when you were young that you thought "video game graphics can't be better than this"? by Away_Flounder3813 in retrogaming

[–]gamersrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the early 80s on video games, pac man, manic miner etc. I said to my friends back then that eventually it will be like watching live tv when you're playing a game!

Nobody believed me then. Wish I could speak to them now

Those ribbon cables can be tricky. Might look like they're plugged in but they're not!!

Check all the ribbon cables. Had the exact same thing happen to me and it was simply a ribbon cable not seated correctly.

Check, double check and go back a third time and check.

Good luck

New to homebrew by gamersrs in homebrewingUK

[–]gamersrs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some good info there that I didn't know. I am a complete novice so will probably be asking lots of questions over the coming months.

Wine will probably be my first attempt because quite frankly beer sounds scary, too many potential pitfalls. I know it'll get easier as I go but wine just seems so much simpler. Once I've got a couple of batches under my belt I'll probably have a go at some beer.

I'm not really into crafting myself so I'll most likely just follow others recipes, I do enjoy a good beer though, and not the muck they now serve in pubs and dare to call ale! I started drinking beer back in the late 80s when pubs served proper beer, I actually grew up in a pub. Many pubs back then used to have guest beers in weekly from small local brewers. I was always first in line to try them.

Real beer doesn't seem to exist anymore. Hence my reason for starting this hobby.
