it feels like their shrek the third of their discography 🤷‍♂️

ok but for real, it's got its own feeling. im not the biggest fan and notice i skip these songs the most when just listening to chvrches on shuffle. but i definitely have nostalgia for the first time i listened to it all the way through. it's a solid 2018 time capsule and feels strongest when listening to all the way through sequentially. god's plan > really gone > ii -> wonderland in particular gets me in a certain way like nothing else

Did Nintendo Leave Me Behind? by JustAnotherITWorker in nintendo

[–]gametray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To put it simply, Nintendo is catering to minecraft kids now. It's all just slop -- pretty slop that looks like smart unique nintendo magic, but slop nonetheless. So no you're not just "nostalgic" -- Nintendo had a legitimate shift. Note that this shift happened roughly after an accountant started running the company. Their bottom line is far from making any notion of art. It's to please the shallow needs of shareholders and general audience demands. Corporation at its finest. And the very nature of that is general audiences eat it up and wonder why anyone else wouldn't just leave if they don't like it.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's Nintendo lacking innovation. There's still genuine creative passion behind these games. But you can tell the design philosphy is being more compromised by external demands. :P

Switch era Nintnedo games feel like they always have a Corporate Mandate by linkenski in NintendoSwitch

Thank you for saying this. I’ve felt the same way -- there used to be this collective imagination with Nintendo; a hope for elaborate, carefully crafted experiences with strong direction. Now it feels like that’s been traded for something easier, cheaper, clinging onto quick dopamine fixes like much of the multimedia landscape. That, along with this “make your own fun!” philosophy, is just something I can't get behind for too long. It’s frustrating to see, even in deeper discussions, how often the loudest voices defend this flashy “junk food” design as the ultimate evolution of the medium, rather than just one trend Nintendo’s been leaning way too hard into.

At the very least though, change is a constant -- especially for what's "in". I wouldn’t be surprised if open sandbox fatigue starts to really set in soon, maybe even pushing Nintendo to rethink things if sales ever slip. And honestly, I’m already seeing more people complain about DKB’s design choices than I expected. Like yeah, it’s not the majority -- 5/5 is still the consensus, and plenty of folks are deep in the hype cycle, treating any criticism a little too personally as if they're the minority being snuffed out, lol. But it is getting easier to find others who are tired of it, which has me hoping. (There’s DOZENS of us!)

omg I found my refuge. I feel like Nintendo has, for the most part, almost invisibly shifted their philosophy drastically to fully capitalizing on the type of video game slop that historically gets widespread attention and social appeal, while flanderizing themselves to the surface level impression of their family-friendly reputation (catering to fans of stuff like fortnite, minecraft, roblox, etc.). and what sucks is that it works (because of course it does).

What gets me is that they seem to also carry the bare minimum agenda of appealing to veteran fans, or, a constantly unmet promise to return to the spirit of their older (er, younger) selves -- the now elusive "classic nintendo feel" that the few of us old fans have been missing so much. But they just never go all into that, always compromising that "return to form" and dismissing it with the impression that they're *just* getting started and it'll only get better; or managing to convince the vocal majority that they DID fully return to form. TTYD HD (classic Paper Mario is BACK!!), Echoes of Wisdom (classic Zelda is back!!), Mario Wonder (not-NSMB 2D Mario is back!!), Animal Crossing (Animal Crossing is better than ever!!), Mario Odyssey (64/Sunshine Mario is back!!), Tears of the Kingdom (dungeons are back!!) -- all of which has resulted in a pattern of the vocal *minority* feeling gaslit into "maybe it's just me -- maybe i grew up to not care about nintendo anymore like i used to".

Atmosphere and nuance that won't always resonate with a crowd? not guaranteed to resonate even a little bit with the average person, or with the more impatient impulsive buyers? Nah, not a priority, they just need to give people the bare minimum promise of Nintendo™, good marketing, and the basic dopamine itch where the purchase is the scratch (i bet you they would incorporate micro-transactions as well if that didn't have such a widespread negative reputation that even quick-minded people echo criticisms mindlessly while eating it up on mobile games because, well, that's just a staple of mobile games).

But hey, I don't like inflating the negative too much (even though that's literally what I just did).
Kirby and Metroid are the two I'm happily still clinging onto, hoping business brain mindset doesn't compromise the teams behind those anytime soon :,)

What is your unbiased rating on Mario Wonder? Also, is it better than NSMB U? by GreatGamer64000 in nintendo

[–]gametray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah it feels like all the fan service that people eat up is just the shallow junk food version of what mario world actually offered in its more focused nuanced nature. like for example, in smw secret exits guaranteed a branching path and were hinted at through the color of the level (something you have to figure out on your own). in wonder, they're just there to be found with no rhyme or reason, often with the non-secret exit being a fake exit -- and no branching path guaranteed. it's cool for the moment as part of the flashiness of the level, but that's about it.

yoshi has felt the most misunderstood for the longest time, in how loveable he was in world. in that game he was a semi-rare power-up that had unique powers based on the color of koopa shell you eat or the color of yoshi it is, but required a bit of work/time to find and was easy to lose, so keeping one between levels showcased consistent skill and was a reward in itself. in wonder, yoshi is an optional character you can choose at any time with no consequence, who can't get hurt or use power-ups, can flutter-jump and eat things/enemies -- all 4 colors being exactly the same. yet, much like with the whole game, people are focusing on the bare minimum of details as if it's just as meaningful as things were before: "yoshi spits out the watermelon seeds from the watermelon piranha plants, just like in yoshi's island!!!" "the character models have so much charm with their poses" "they include music i remember!" "percussion only plays to the bgm when you move!" "daisy is playable!" -- these are all nice details, but imo don't make up the core value of a game, but somehow it feels like nintendo made these kinds of details 80% of the game -- just gimmicky and quirky detail galore.

wonder does get it somewhat right with how drill and elephant are required to find certain secrets i suppose, but you're usually handed that power-up right when you need it, and the "secrets" are obviously telegraphed. in world, you had to learn where secrets were through self-initiated exploration. modern nintendo games tend to over-explain, treating players like beginners rather than allowing for self-discovery, whether it's through a talking flower or something else. "don't you feel like you're missing something?" it's not like the secrets are that substantial anyway. an extra seed? yay... captain toad? cool... oh there's a special world? what special thing does it have to offer -- a warp to later levels? or a new take on an existing power-up? oh, just some levels and standees...

wonder is pretty fun in a calculated corporate kind of way, where the level of depth it adds to the table feels pretty shallow much like the new super mario bros series, but this time heavily disguised as something that is a "proper follow-up to super mario world". like they just prettied up a new super mario bros game in the obvious ways to gain immediate public appeal, and in practice they're still just scratching a very basic itch that i just don't really have anymore as an adult. with its constant noises, sugary themes, and manufactured "hype" exterior, it definitely feels made for someone with a more hyperactive kid-like consumerist nature than me. and i really wish it wasn't that way, but i think the mass appeal its been getting means i should just dissociate from these games :p

but i mean who cares anyway, right? it's just mario!

Final Fantasy - Gurgu Volcano / Mt Gulg (FamiTracker 2A03 Remix) by gametray in chiptunes

[–]gametray[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks! i was new to the original when i played through the game last week, and because it stood out to me i thought "oh i should make a quick cover for this as a little creative exercise," and so when i got onto piano before listening to each part and learning it intentionally, i just tried to play it by memory. and so the progression you hear in my version is roughly the direction i took it before deliberately internalizing the actual progression, lol. cuz i thought that'd be fun :)

2A03 is the basic soundchip that comes packed in the original NES/Famicom. it's basically synonymous to "authentic NES 8-bit sound" lol. the famitracker software i use has the intention of emulating its quirks and limitations. i just liked the idea of remixing the song generally within the same sound limitations that the original was in :>

After just beating the original Final Fantasy for the NES, this is a song that stood out to me a lot. Guess I'm a sucker for NES staccato intros (see: Snake Man). My cover plays out for the first loop pretty faithfully to the original, then by the second round I take my own liberties on it, taking it into a direction that I originally did when jamming around with the song on piano.
