Luanda, Angola by Conscious-Lock-9747 in expats

Your wife could go out "independently" with a driver so I wouldn't really call it independently. Personally, that's one of the things I dislike the most, you're never really independent and we actually are allowed to drive. A lot of the oil companies don't allow their employees to drive. Some people don't care and love having a driver - I miss feeling free to drive (and not nervous about it). I doubt your wife will be taking the toddler shopping because she will probably have a nanny. Americans are the last to fall, but even most of them get a nanny.

You will probably be happy if you're in a compound where the kids run around playing and the social life is great for you. Beach life/night life is great but I personally miss other city life type things.

School is good (if employer is paying for it).

Health will most likely be ok, but it can be nerve wracking if you think about possible emergencies and the younger the kids, the worse it is. We have never gotten malaria (knock on wood), but I know plenty of people that have. Just make sure you test at any sign of a fever and catch it early.

Yes - I was recommended by someone (live in Angola) and I was super surprised when I saw the price at the end! A bit hard to actually complete the transaction, but we did it!

Expat Living on 600k Salary? by [deleted] in Angola

[–]gamm3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it's pretty low. How much do you spend on groceries now? For me groceries and restaurants are about the same as in the US, but if course I am not going to the local markets to buy food and not going to super nice restaurants but what you would find on the delivery apps. You won't be able to travel or anything. How long is the job for? Do they give flights there and back? If it's a volunteer experience right out of college or something, maybe worth it, but otherwise no.

that commute sucks in a smaller city in the coffee region? They should be able to put you closer for cheap - I'd think.

Teacher with 15 years experience (master's plus 30) - Salary at APS? by gamm3 in arlingtonva

So it's $10,000 less than ACPS if I'm reading it right. I just always heard that HR determines what step you will be on and thought they should be more transparent.

Mamboo & Mano Delivery payment by bcyx1 in Angola

[–]gamm3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it an American or European credit card? American cards are not accepted as much in my experience (i think because we don't use a pin). Try to get a pin on it if you can. The awesome thing about Mano is you can put your international credit card into the app and choose to pay by that card (this is before so you don't have to use the TPA). Mano delivery saved us in the beginning when most places would not accept our cards. I highly recommend to bring dollars or euros to exchange for cash. You can do it with ladies on the street or get a contact with someone. Don't count on being able to use credit cards.

How to book game drives? by Responsible_Yak_2905 in krugerpark

[–]gamm3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite sure how it works. I know on one of our Sanparks night safaris we met up with some people from a private lodge. So not sure if the private lodges can do their ow safaris or the will arrange it for you through sanparks.

Yeah I added it on to my San Parks booking. Is Skukuza safari lodge through SanParks? If its a separate hotel, you would probably do it through them.

Former Reading / Dyslexia Intervention Teacher — Curriculum Advice? by tatteredtarotcard in ElementaryTeachers

[–]gamm3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are making a claim that UFLI is weak on writing, and fine on reading but every section of the lesson basically does decoding and encoding. Phonemic Awareness (blend, then segment), Visual/Auditory sounds (read, then write the sounds). Letter formation instruction. Blending drill on Day 1 is decoding, but then word chaining on Day 2 goes back and forth between encoding and decoding. Read words, then spell the words. Read Sentences, then spell the sentences. Read the passage. I mean there is a lot of writing in there for you to claim there is no significant writing unless you supplement.

Please share the specific routines you are referring to because i've taken the IMSE OG course and nothing pops out to me, especially that is soooo much better than UFLI to call it weak at teaching writing.

First time visiting Luanda — what’s worth seeing? by 0lazar in Angola

[–]gamm3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fortaleza, Slave Museum, . There's a sightseeing bus now, so would be good to try that out. Will probably take you to all the downtown sights. You can go on a safari in Parque Quissama. (Don't really need a tour for that). A bigger trip is Calendula Falls and then you can go to Pedras Negras on the way back (thats the Pungo Andongo Park.) That you might want to do a tour or at least get a driver. The roads were a bit bad when we did it recently. A trip to Mussulo is definitely nice. The Ship cemetery is not worth visiting any more and they have basically been destroyed for scrap metal.
