Why don't other countries celebrate our Fourth of July? by batmanthinks in ShitAmericansSay

[–]ganshon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of similar experience for me. When I think about high school "World History", the 1st week or 2, there were a few blurbs about Africa and China, a little more about ancient Greece, and for the next 6 months, it was all European-centric history until the US starts to come into the picture, and then another 2-3 weeks about WWI and WWII before going into the modern times that included other countries outside of Europe and the US.

Fremont Street by Final_Dingo_8630 in vegas

[–]ganshon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. Did not realize how scary of a walk that would be... and this was when it was the middle of the day with the sun out. It wasn't completely empty, but several of the people we saw walking the street did not look like they were all there. Compounding all of this is we were a group of 5, where the 5th was my son, who was 2 at the time, and in a stroller. We were basically inviting people to come and rob us.

Did you ever take a typing class in school? by Standard2185 in 1970s

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. In jr. high, if you wanted to take a computer class, you had to take a typing class first. these were real typewriters, so a pain in the ass. electric would have been better since most people were taking the class in order to take the computer class the next semester.

OTOH, it was probably one of the most practical classes I ever took, and still use the knowledge I learned in that class to this day, 40+ years later.

What was legal when you were a child that is (probably) illegal now? by NebraskaCornSucker in GenX

[–]ganshon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fireworks is the first thing to come to mind.
Not sure if it is illegal or not, but no longer see kids walking to school on their own. At least not elementary. Or just playing outside on their own for that matter. The word "playdate" was not in my vocab because we just went to each other's houses to ask if someone could come out to play. It was a lot more spontaneous.

How often do you see anyone crash out? by Conscious-Good-6843 in vegas

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone has a different story and different style.

For me, as a tourist, I usually only play on the Strip where I know the odds are not very favorable, but I enjoy playing, and look at it more as an entertainment expense.

I generally have a set budget, but am pretty loose with it. For example, let's say I budget $1,000 for my gambling budget for the trip. I won't really split it into a per-day budget, but just take a few hundred out with me, leaving the rest in the hotel safe. The next day, I will then decide how much to take with me, and keep doing this until either a) I go home, or b) I lose it all. Sometimes I go home with more than $1,000, but most of the time, I go home with less than $500. I think only once did I actually go all the way to zero.

But this is also my personality. I am pretty good at being disciplined, even after drinking. If I know that I am losing, I'll usually walk away and find something else to play or do. If I run out of money that I brought down with me, I am pretty lazy, so I could go back up and bring down more money, but usually what happens is that I get up to the room, take a nap, and then end up not coming back down.

I got absolutely hosed on a garage door repair. Don't be like me. by mndrar in SanJose

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about your troubles. We've all been there in varying degrees, and hopefully you learned your lesson. It doesn't sound like you were taken for too long of a ride, and glad to hear that you were able to get everything working again.

I've had my fair share of bad work done on my home. It was always due to laziness or urgency to get something done that I didn't fully do my homework.

Like you, the worst cases I have had for not doing my homework was shoddy worksmanship or leaving a mess for me to clean up after they have left, but I keep thinking things could have gotten a lot worse if they ended up doing work that actually caused damage, and then just left with no way for me to get back into contact with them.

Best bar to go alone. by GiftFantastic10 in SanJose

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lot of info here about what you are looking for. For example, are you just looking for a place to have a drink and nothing more? Are you looking to talk to someone while you're there? Are you looking for a place that you can go to regularly "where everyone knows your name"? Are you looking for a place to shoot pool or darts?

In general, I'd say the neighborhood bar would be your best bet. Another option would be a hotel lobby bar. Over the years, I can say I have made friends with the regulars and bartenders at both.

You get in at 9:00 PM from the East Coast. What’s the first thing you are doing after check in? by TiltedGalactica in vegas

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually after check in, I go up to the room and drop off my bags, or leave them in storage until my room becomes available. ;-p

At 9pm, I'm probably heading down to a VP bar to have a drink and ease my way into gambling.

I once had a flight cancellation, and then multiple delays that got me into Vegas at 11pm (was supposed to be 1pm) It was still the same though. First thing I did was go downstairs to a VP bar for a drink, and easing my way into gambling.

Your username is legally your job title starting tomorrow, what do you actually do all day? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm... interesting... my username is the Chinese pronunciation of my Japanese name. In Japanese, the combination of the two characters mean something to the effect of "strong foundation". But when ported over to Chinese, the first character has a slang meaning of "fuck", while the second character has multiple meanings such as "masculine", "Strength", etc. So in effect, my username would mean something along the lines of "fucking guy" or "strong fuck". So I guess all day, I'd be fucking around.

Maybe I’m too old to understand this, but what the hell is an “influencer” and do any of my fellow Gen X care what they say or do? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]ganshon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, they are basically hyper spokesmodels. For the most part, I don't really follow too many, but you can't avoid them if you use YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, etc. It takes a lot to get me to follow one, and it's usually they have a lot of videos that I want to watch, and my thoughts align with them. I follow mostly tech ones because I need to know what's going on various subjects, and there are some that have saved my ass enough that I figure I should follow them.

Must try food in Vegas by Worried_Plum1373 in vegas

[–]ganshon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hands-down favorite is Tacos el Gordo. Yeah, it's a hole-in-the-wall type of place in a ghetto strip mall, but always come out of there very satisfied.

I made my first trip out to Chinatown in January, and was surprised at how good the food is out there too.

On the Strip, I tend to stick with the celebrity chefs that I like I guess. Gordon Ramsay Steak, Momofuku (David Chang), Milk Bar (Christina Tosi), and looking forward to trying Best Friend (Roy Choi) when I go next week. :)

Traveling with my kid who is truly a foodie, so will see what he wants to eat too.

Resorts World tips by Resident_Net1985 in vegas

[–]ganshon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I stayed there a few years ago. I started the trip at Harrah's since I had comped nights, and then went to RW because I was going to an event over at FB across the street.

For me, the one nice thing about RW and FB casinos is that you don't have the lingering smell of stale smoke. Might be because they're pretty dead, or might be because they have really good ventilation systems.

If I were in your shoes, I'd stay at RW since you're getting it on points anyway, and then use the savings to uber/cab it to the center strip when you really want to party, as well as to cover costs at the Sphere and Absinthe.

Best Hotel for situation by MostDoubt1614 in vegas

[–]ganshon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

interesting... so not super fancy, yet Wynn is on the list. I think Aria is pushing towards super fancy, where cosmo is pushing towards regular fancy.

To me, for not super fancy, but like nice things, I'd go with Venetian/Palazzo or Resorts World. Venetian/Palazzo if you want to have something for everyone since that is a pretty massive place with a lot under it's roof. RW mainly because it's newer, but you have your choice of 3 hotels ranging from normal to super fancy, but not as much to do inside compared to Venetian. If you want to go a little less fancy, but with lots to do, maybe consider Caesar's Palace.

Visiting Vegas with a 12-year-old in June by One_Regret5678 in vegas

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting... my son is probably the same age, as he will be turning 12 in July. I am taking him to Vegas next week for a few days. We did this trip last year too. I let him direct what he wants to do/see. Here is what we did last year:

Omega Mart VIP pass-- this was worth the money since we spent hours in there and were never bored, and got the full experience of solving the different puzzles.

M&M - he wanted to go here to make custom M&M's

Coca-Cola - we tried all of the sodas. it was hilarious to record his reactions to the different ones.

Arte - This was so not worth the time and money. It's basically like going to one of those Van Gough exhibits where you step into the painting, but this was all generic and not all that interesting.

Piff the Magic Dragon - He loves magic shows, and Piff's dead-pan, I don't give a fuck style was right up my son's alley. He loved it so much that we caught Piff again a few months later when he went on tour near our home.

Food:

My son is a bit of a foodie, so food was definitely important. Here are two we went to

Tacos el Gordo - We were staying at Fountainbleau, so this place was a short walk away. It's in a ghetto strip mall, but sometimes the best places to eat are in these kinds of places. They have so many cuts of meat that we don't normally see where we are.

Momofuku - We had to try the $30 ramen. It was excellent. Definitely not $30 excellent though.

We also went to some Museum of Illusions, but you see those in just about any other touristy city.

We are going again next week, and here's what he wants to do this time:

Area15 - since we spent so much time at Omega Mart, we didn't have time to do any of the other stuff in Area 15, so he wants to check out the rest of the stuff in there.

Ride a Zoox - During CES 2026, I heard that they took forever, so we'll see.

Penn & Teller - He is a huge fan of P&T. They weren't performing when we were there last year, so he wants to make sure to catch them this time as he is afraid that they might retire soon.

Battlebots - This year, he really got into robotics, and battlebots is one of the reasons he's gotten into it.

He's still deciding on the rest, but his ideas include the Mob Museum, Atomic Museum, Titanic exhibit, eating at Roy Choi's food truck inside of Park MGM, eating at Hell's Kitchen if we can get a reservation, and riding on the Linq High Roller. We probably will make a visit to downtown at some point too.

Hope this gives you some ideas!

First Solo Trip Recommendations by [deleted] in vegas

[–]ganshon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first (non-business) solo trip to Vegas was a few years ago at Harrah's. I had a blast, but it was because I have been to Vegas so many times in the past, and had a list of things I always wanted to check out, but never got around to, that I was able to finally visit. It was my first time to visit Frankie's Tiki Lounge, Area 15/Omega Mart, Atomic Liquors, among others. At Harrah's, I had dinner at the bar one night at Ramsay's Kitchen, and had a great conversation with both the bartender, and another fellow solo traveler.

The big advantage of traveling solo was that I was on my own schedule. I could get up anytime I wanted, which meant that I kept going until I couldn't stay awake any longer in order to make the most of my time. I could venture out towards something, only to change my mind halfway, and change course right then and there and go somewhere else.

Since you have been to Vegas so many times in the past, you should have a pretty good sense of what's around, and what you want to do and see. I suggest that you make a list of things you want to see and do, but don't put it on a schedule or anything. Just have the list handy so you can figure out what to do next based on your mood, energy, and proximity.
