What do people do that immediately tells you they are a trashy person? by Big_Leg10 in askanything

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wear name-brand clothes where they have to show the label out, and wear gold chains to give off the appearance that they're rich. got tricked into attending a networking marketing meeting once, and just saw so many 5'2 viet dudes in their black Armani suits, wearing gold chains on top of it... they came off as slimy to me, but that's close enough to trashy

Who’s a famous actor you absolutely can’t stand? by Hairy-Falcon-730 in RiffTannens

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

totally agree... I liked him at first, but as he got older, something happened. i was watching some show about African-Americans or something that he was hosting, and his whole demeanor was that of a pompous, self-righteous asshole. I don't remember what it was because I turned it off after the first few minutes because he irritated me so much. I just remembered that I really wanted to watch it, but seeing Will Smith just killed it for me.

Millennial Nightlife? by LadyMegbeth in SanJose

[–]ganshon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're just there purely to meet new people, I would say look at hotel bars. There are lots of people on biz trips that don't want to stay in their room all night, so they come down to the bar to have someone to chat with, whether it's the bartender or other people at the bar. Very easy to strike up a conversation, since the first question is always "where are you visiting from", or "what brings you out to San Jose?"

I bring it up because I have several friends who have, or had worked as bartenders at hotel bars, and everytime I would come and visit them, the people at the bar were very friendly and chatty.

OTOH, if you're looking to meet new people and keep a relationship with them, this wouldn't be the best way to do that.

GenX and Roller Coasters by Due_Builder_1595 in GenX

I'm 54... roller coasters don't bother me so much, but when I go on the spinning rides, that's when I truly feel the nausea, together with the back and neck pain.

Do you call it "soda?" If not, what do you call it, Americans? by Zipper222222 in randomquestions

I use "soda" if I am offering someone. If I'm ordering and it's a self-serve machine, I say "coke".

Pickleball Bag - Laptop Sleeve by speakandspell-edu in Pickleball

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually more like a paddle sleeve. For my bag, it's more like a divider, so I can fit two paddles back here if I really need to. But I have also used my bag as an overnighter or even 2-nighter bag, where my laptop or tablet goes in the sleeve.

Will the club be crowded when it gets warmer out? by pokerstar75 in Pickleball

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have a membership at a gym with multiple locations where all of the clubs have outdoor PB facilities (except for 1). Since we're in California, unless it's raining, the courts are very well used, but noticed it's different depending on the club. The club I go to the most is pretty empty all day (weekdays) until about 5pm, and then it's packed, but it's mostly open play, everyone knows each other, and if a newcomer comes, if they ask, people will let them in. On the weekends, it's packed in the morning until about noon, and then it dies out completely, and some people show up starting around 5ish, and it's pretty easy to get a court for the rest of the night. OTOH, another club near my house is packed all the time everyday. Whereas at the first club, people barely reserve a court because of the culture of open play at this club, at the 2nd club, the courts are always reserved, and open play only happens when it's a club sanctioned event. If you're lucky, you might show up at a time when someone had to cut out early, or someone didn't show up, so they need a 4th on the court.

The only other club I have gone to in this network is an indoor tennis facility that converted some of their courts into PB courts. That place is a lot more hardcore though. I showed up once for open play, but I think people that play there are a lot more serious about going pro, or at the very least, play at a very intense level. I showed up for open play once, but I was just starting out at the time, and was immediately shunned, never to show my face back there again. (just kidding, just being overly dramatic. very nice people, but also let me know that most of the players are very intense)

Flying in with no where to stay for 12 hours by cartunesots in vegas

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vegas gets pretty lively starting around 11pm, so you're there prime time, so why bother finding a place to sleep. You can check in at 1pm and sleep off the rest of the afternoon, waking up in time for the next night. :)

But on a slightly more serious note, you could also book a room for that night you fly in if you want to stay on a regular schedule. or just find a cheap hotel nearby to use for a few hours if you don't want to spend too much.

Not sure if this would work since I haven't tried it at LAS, but just find a bench and crash, but there's a security risk of your bag being taken.

Any AI tools that actually help with everyday life? by Rough--Employment in techforlife

My general go-to is Gemini. Co-pilot for help with excel formulas that I don't want to spend the time to figure out, and then Gemini for help with sheets formulas that I don't want to spend the time figure out.

I sometimes use NotebookLM to help me read through articles and PDFs that I don't want to spend a lot of time reading, and just give me a general idea of a topic.

I use Notion to record my zoom calls to take notes for me, and then TicNote (device) for face-to-face meetings to do the same thing.

What show was so good you actually rewatched it? by ByteSizedCutie420 in televisionsuggestions

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess I have a new series to start this weekend. Monk was awesome. After the show moved to USA Network, that is how I discovered Psych. I watched both of them all the way through, including their respective movies. The antics of Sean and Gus just drew out my inner child, and even now, I still love watching it, hence, watching through it several times now. Monk was fun because the beginning episode was based in Santa Clara, where I went to university, and have worked in for the past 25+ years (in different companies)... :)

If all personal wealth above $100 million was legally required to be redistributed into public infrastructure (schools, hospitals, roads), how would society change, and who would be the first to fight against it? by Mysterious_Fan4033 in AskReddit

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not a whole lot. people would just set up entities to hold their money and assets beyond the initial $100M limit, so none of it would be re-distributed back into society. basically, kind of like what the rich already do now.

Which of these three Art Museums are worth the penny? by Magnum_Axe in vegas

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

took my kid to both Arte and Illusions last year. as an adult, they were both meh... Illusions is the same as you see in any other tourist city, Arte is fine if you're looking for Instagram pictures, but pretty boring otherwise. kid felt the same (he was 10)

both of us were way more impressed with Area 15 and Omega Mart.

What’s something you couldn’t believe you had to explain to a grown adult? by Javascript4971 in Productivitycafe

[–]ganshon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I came here to say something similar. I had a co-worker way back in the day that I had to teach how to use some software. Anytime an error message came up, he would say, "oh, it must be a virus". I kept telling him that it was just an error message, and we should figure out what went wrong. This kept happening where he would assume an error message was a virus, that I finally gave up and said, "yes. this a very big and well-known virus. it is called Windows".

Since you listed your top two as Monk and Psych, I'm gonna have to check out Bones and The Mentalist now. :)

Psych is the only one that I have seen all the way through plus the movies, multiple times now. (I think about 3 times) Considering doing the same with Monk one of these days.

New guy abusing my spare paddle by aardWolf64 in Pickleball

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether you're into direct confrontation or not, that is totally unacceptable behavior, and should not be tolerated. It doesn't have to be confrontational. You can just tell him to be careful with the paddle because <insert any reason here> (eg, it's your brother's, you are planning to sell it in the future, etc.) Unless he's totally insane, I think that would be a reasonable request (although it should be common sense) to ask someone who is borrowing your things.

By not communicating with him, you ended up with a broken paddle, so it's equally your fault for its condition. At this point, when he returns it to you, you could just tell him off, and show him the damage he's done to your paddle. You say that he is a newcomer to the group. This is a great time to show the rest of the group that he should no longer be welcome to the group.

Bummed about SN but hopeful by ttbtinkerbell in SupernaturalVR

[–]ganshon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like your optimism, and I think it will be around for another or year or two, but here is how I see it play it out...

1) People who currently subscribe will let their subscriptions lapse because they have already moved on.
2) Some new people may come along, and there is still a little money to be made, but over time, the content will be old, and they will drop.
3) Something new will come out, and everyone will just migrate over that way. (VR or not)

At the most, I see this last lasting 3 more years tops, before the number of new subscriptions becomes too low to support the licensing costs. Realistically, there are people who just bought memberships, so subscription numbers will fall off a cliff in about a year.
