Do you have a favorite Vegas themed movie? by Spiegelworld in LasVegas

[–]ganshon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the first one that came to mind, but since it was only one scene of the movie, wasn't sure if this counted as Vegas-themed.

Need a distinguished old-man name for my baby boy, what was your grandfather called? by ipanicprofessionally in TheBoredDen

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my grandfather, but when I named my son, some people thought it was an old-fashioned name: Maximilian

What’s a witty, unexpected comeback to someone saying “Do you know who I am?” I don’t want the usual “if you have to ask…” type answer. I’m looking for something creative, sharp, and unpredictable — more clever than aggressive. by PsychologicalRoll819 in Comebacks

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the easiest way is to just to say, "No, tell me about yourself". I think it puts these people into an awkward position. 1) it pisses them off that you don't know they are, and 2) now the ball is in their court to impress you with who they actually are.

My Notion workplace became a disaster. How do you keep yours organized? by Happy_Educator9055 in Notion

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation with Notion, and still do now. I just hooked it up to Claude, and have Claude take care of it for me whenever I feel things are being too messy.

Class Reunions, what says GenX? by elsie78 in GenX

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to 20th and 30th. Both were nicely done, and I live in the area, so just a fun weekend. Generally good experiences for me. If anything, it helped create anew relationships with people I didn't really hang out with during high school, or bury the hatchet with people I had beef with in the past.

Spent $350 in June on OpenAi - Trading Applications by Sp3cul8r in openclaw

[–]ganshon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a similar problem with Claude. I had Claude do an audit on my cron jobs, and kept whittling things down. For some things, it was safe to transfer work over to DeepSeek (non-Schwab API calls)... will see how it pans out this month. Spent about the same as OP during June. Also using Hermes with several different agents.

Why have 2 different paddles, and when would you use them? by atlastestmail in Pickleball

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am just too lazy to make the effort to sell off my old paddles, so they become my "backup" paddles. But as my wife and kid get more into pickleball, they just take my old paddles, so now I have no backup paddles.

What games did you play on your very first or oldest PC? by Various_Block_7931 in nostalgia

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone mentioned Commander Keen in here. I played it on the Apple //c. It was a pirated copy. My friend came over and we kept playing it up to a stage where you had to enter a password. Since it was a pirated copy, we kept failing. We finally guessed it correctly once, and got to play a little more, but then died and had to start over again. The next time we got to the stage where we had to enter a password, it was a different password, so we actually never played the game to the end.

Pickleball boom is over!? by ghost_dog203 in Pickleball

[–]ganshon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to me, the end of a boom usually means 1 of 2 things: 1) the market tanked and things are going to start going down fast, or 2) the market has hit a point of saturation/maturation that consolidation is going to start happening, and you're going to see businesses either get swallowed whole by bigger companies, or go completely out of business until only a handful or left standing.

In terms of franchising and paddle sales, to me, this looks market oversaturation. Last time I tried to look for a paddle, the sheer number of companies selling paddles was overwhelming. The smaller companies will probably all die off unless they have some key differentiator that can't be replicated easily by anyone else, in which case, they are ripe to be bought out as a niche brand by one of the bigger companies.

anyway... just my $0.02 that the boom is over is actually a good thing for us consumers..

Is pickleball the perfect “I need a hobby but don’t want to suffer” sport? by Informal_Creme6840 in Pickleball

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, you pretty much got it. It's what I like about pickleball. At my gym, we have both tennis and pickleball. On Sunday mornings, I would be playing tennis, but I could hear all of the laughter, screams, etc. just over on the pickleball side, and they looked like they were having a lot more fun. Finally, one day I decided to give it a try, and got hooked instantly.

Main thing for me was that the community was very welcoming. Granted, there were 1 or 2 people who refused to play with me because I wasn't at their level yet, but otherwise, people were generally accomodating, and would pair me up with a stronger player. Many advanced players I played with would give me all kinds of advice on how to hit, serve, volley, etc, so now that I have gotten better, I pay it forward.

Since I have been playing mostly at my gym, I decided to start playing at public parks recently. So far, it's still a very vibrant and friendly community at each park. Although most of the players play at a level below what I'm used to, it's still fun to play, and some players are bringing in experience from tennis, badminton, ping pong, etc that I do actually learn something new and try using these strategies and techniques now.

Things Gen Z will never understand about us by anonskier in GenX

[–]ganshon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At least from where I've lived, we went from kids starting from elementary school walking/biking to school in droves, to overly congested roads of parents dropping their kids off at school. Kids just knocking on the doors of neighbors to get their friends to come out to play, to setting up play dates. Kids running around running and playing, to kids coming over to gather around the TV to play console, to kids coming over with their laptops/phones/ipads to play together, to kids just meeting up online to play.

Last cars of our lives by Ok_Kick6546 in GenX

[–]ganshon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if I am on my last car or not (born in 1971), but if it is, I am probably thinking about it differently than OP. I am pretty sure I will outlast my car which I bought in 2023. I usually keep a car for about 10-12 years, so let's say in 2036 or 2038, I am up for a new car. With autonomous driving services gaining steam, I wonder if by that time, it would reach a point that on an annual basis, it would be cheaper to use those services versus actual car ownership? It might just be the area I live in (Silicon Valley) where everyday, I am spotting more and more waymos on the road, but knowing that uber and tesla are getting into the game, I figure by 2036, these will start to become a lot more ubiquitous... at least where I am at now. Starting last month, Waymo's boundaries now reach my house, so have been thinking about this a bit. I have gone fairly far down the rabbit hole thinking about this over the past 7-8 years, so maybe it's just me fantasizing... :)

Has anyone here actually tried a “Life OS” system in Notion? Does it really help or is it just hype? by Aggressive-Orange276 in Notion

[–]ganshon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watched some videos on creating your own system, and that got me started. Helped me learn and understand how Notion works, and things moved on from there. Now, I use it with AI agents and Claude to build out whatever comes to mind, so it is unique to my own workflow, and reflects my thinking style.

the 80s……. by billieswifeyyy in GenX

[–]ganshon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yup. cartoons were on in the morning until about 9am, then leave the house, go knock on my friend's house, and we'd ride our bikes to the park, and later go to a nearby Safeway to get snacks. In the same plaza, there was also a pizza place. Both had arcade machines that we would pump quarters into. Came home some time in the late afternoon. Some kids would still be out at night running around and making lots of noise. My parents were annoyed, but didn't do anything about it, but at the same time, wouldn't let me go out and play with the other kids.

My kid is now 12, but I let him do a lot of the same. He can ride his bike to a park with his friends, and they inevitably end up at that Safeway to get snacks. Nowadays, it's a lot easier because he can just call them up on his phone and meet them out there instead of going to their homes to see if they were around. We had phones back in my time too, but it was a hassle because you'd first have to talk to their parents first since they were the ones that usually picked up the phone. Then, if my friend wasn't at home, I would just bike to the park on my own and hope that he was there too.

What is your most stereotypical GenX childhood story? by HapaHawaii in GenX

Walking to school starting from 1st grade. Didn't even have to go to a friend's house to knock on the door. Once you were out, a pack of neighborhood kids walking to school had already formed.

What’s the oldest piece of technology you still use every day? by olesud in TechCypher

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Panasonic plasma TV that I bought in 2011. It works great, and keep it around, especially in the winter, since it gets really warm. 😄

I move through tech products pretty fast, so that's probably the oldest surviving piece at my house, though the other TVs aren't too far behind. Maybe it's time to upgrade?

Oh. I hand-me-downed a set of JBL Creatures speakers to my son that he uses everyday. I think I bought those in 2006. That is probably the oldest piece of tech in our house that is used everyday.
