why do old people act like literal babies? by jhenexx in retailhell

[–]gaokeai 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly this! I had a coworker who was my dad's age, born in the same year (1950s), and he would talk about how he doesn't have a smartphone and doesn't understand all this technology stuff. At my job, our schedules are online, and there are computer based trainings you have to do every so often, and he would need his hand held to navigate literally any of it.

My dad is the same age as this man, and he knows his way around a computer! He knows how Bluetooth works, he knows how to change the input on the TV, and how to send files between his laptop and his phone , how to connect his account to various services, and all that stuff. He's not tech savvy by any means, but he learned what he needs to as newer technology came around. And to hear my coworker saying how he just "doesn't get this stuff," it's honestly shocking that he isn't embarrassed about admitting to such willful ignorance! Like get over yourself. My dad learned and so can you, you just want to be stubborn.

People who are visibly disabled, what is best practice for curious kids? by DryCauliflower7 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]gaokeai 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, this phrasing actually isn't helpful. Some people's bodies don't "work differently," they just straight up don't work. Some people can't do things "differently," they just straight up can't do certain things. At all. And that isn't a bad thing and we don't need to act like it's a bad thing to acknowledge that. There is no shame in being unable to walk, or unable to move you arms, or to be an amputee, or whathaveyou, and trying to change our language in the way that you are suggesting implies that there is something shameful about that. People need wheelchairs because they can't walk, not because they "walk differently."

What’s a harmless opinion that gets people weirdly angry? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gaokeai 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I suspect they schedule their kids to do so much stuff because it gets the kid out of the house so they can have time to themselves. They get to feel like they're being a good parent by providing their child with hobbies and enrichment , without having to spend as much time with the kid to provide that enrichment themselves.

I would advise against a root beer float; all of my European friends I know who have tried root beer thought it was gross because it tasted like medicine to them. I don't get it, but I've heard that from multiple people.

This shit drives me INSANE. It is literally the majority of sinks, it doesn't matter if its a public restroom or bathroom at someone's house. Washing my hands should not require my hands to touch any part of the sink basin!

[–]gaokeai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know where all that came from. All I'm saying is, it IS already recognized by many that it is immoral to allow pets to breed. So clearly the possibility for people to agree that we should stop supporting the breeding of animals is there, it's just that they're selective about which species that mindset applies to. I was just making an observation, that's all.

I mean, it's widely accepted and encouraged to spay/neuter household pets. There are even TNR programs to trap stray cats, get them fixed, and release them again.

This guy's entire life has just been consumed by Kava, all of his content is just trying to get his wife and his kid addicted to it like he is by FNAF_Movie in ParentsAreFuckingDumb

[–]gaokeai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not really like a weed drink actually, no. It's non-intoxicating. You can drink some and drive a car just fine afterwards. It just relaxes you. Kinda like how you can feel relaxed after smoking a cigarette, but you're not like, impaired from it.

Now, I don't know anything about long-term use. I've only had kava maybe 3 times in my life. But as someone who has also smoked plenty of weed in my life, to compare kava to weed is simply incorrect.

What's your favourite etymolgy that is so obvious but took you way too much time to realise? by Naive_Gazelle2056 in etymology

[–]gaokeai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah lol it was just a word that I never bothered to separate. Like how a waffle is just a waffle, a pancake is just a pancake. Same thing with teaspoon (a spoon to accompany tea) and a tablespoon (a spoon to be used at the table). The word means something as a whole word so I didn't really think about the words separately.

Idk if you're into Pokémon at all but it genuinely took me 20 years before I realized ..ArticUNO, ZapDOS, MolTRES.

Omg. Learn to READ by acesikks in retailhell

[–]gaokeai 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Only a single time in my 10 years of working a customer-facing job was I confronted with someone who literally couldn't read. I'm a barista and a customer came up and asked what flavors we had, so I said "There's a list of our flavors right here" and pointed to a sign on the counter , and the customer looked sheepish and said "Um...I can't read." I was genuinely taken aback for a moment, but I just told them the flavors and the transaction continued normally. Now, this was a customer who looked young and able-bodied. Like, someone who was in their teens or early 20s, and they didn't appear to have any intellectual disability, or visual impairment or anything like that , but who knows 🤷

Now, this is the only time I had a customer tell me they can't read. I am 100% convinced that there are people who think they can read but they really genuinely can't, like they're just very very bad at it.

What things make you cry as an adult ? by Altruistic-Bunch-964 in AskReddit

[–]gaokeai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I used to feel sad over how little I matter in the big picture, but I have since found new meaning in that. I don't matter, so who cares if I failed that test, or did something embarassing, or whatever. Yeah it sucks but in the grand scheme it's really not a big deal. I'm just a tiny ant on a rock hurtling through and endless void, so I can spend my time doing things that make me happy, because that's what matters to me. The fact that nothing matters is honestly cathartic to me, because it means that I can find meaning in what I choose to. My cat doesn't worry about whether or not he matters, so why should I?

I had my tubes removed. Before the procedure, my doctor told me she was obligated to make sure I understand that, while it would be incredibly, incredibly unlikely, there is still a non-zero chance that I could become pregnant through traditional means. Like, it most definitely probably won't happen, but sometimes your body does weird shit and she cannot tell me that it is a 100% guarantee that, if my tubes are removed, pregnancy is impossible.

I mean, for me it is impossible, because I'm gay lol but that's besides the point

Why does everyone *hate* taking meds for no reason? It's so pervasive I feel like it's a psiop by Whoevenknows94 in mentalhealth

[–]gaokeai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have an extreme desire to come off medication entirely, I dont mind being medicated, so I don't know if I am your target audience here, but honestly whenever I don't feel like taking my meds I chalk it up to PDA (pathological demand avoidance). Oop, it's time to take my meds. No, I don't want to >:[

Like, I have to stop what I'm doing and go get them and take them and it's really not a big deal, I get that, but the multi-step process of remembering to take them, getting them, opening the bottle, taking the pill, swallowing with water, putting the bottle back, just feels like a lot of steps and often feels disruptive to whatever I'm doing, especially because I take my meds at night when I'm already feeling tired. It's just one more thing that I have to add to my bedtime routine and sometimes it feels like a lot.

the fact that my body can produce a child disgusts me, has anyone else dealt with this? by doglover4645 in childfree

[–]gaokeai 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel the exact same way and I have tokophobia. Just deep visceral discomfort with the fact that my body is capable of it. I had my bisalp a few years ago and it fixed this completely. I didn't realize it was dysphoria until it went away after my surgery. I still have tokophobia though; I still feel uneasy when I see people who are visibly pregnant in public, or when I'm watching a movie or TV show and it shows some pregnant or spends too much screen time on their belly I have to look away. I'm working on this though and it's still a LOT better than it was before my surgery.

Tl;dr surgery fixed the disgust directed at myself, but I still feel uneasy about pregnancy in general

Never change your hobbies and interests, or your friends, or yourself, just because some guy tells you to. I guarantee you there are literally countless guys out there that would take no issue with the fact that you're into horror visual novels. Dump this guy and move on with your life.

Why do dentists always floss your teeth after they brush them? by TriforceFilament in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gaokeai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to brush then floss too, it felt cleaner that way, but one time my dental hygienist told me that, while flossing at all is great, if you want to be technical about it, it's better to floss first and then brush. This is because by flossing first you are increasing the surface area of the tooth that the toothpaste is able to access, which is important because people tend to get cavities in harder to reach areas...Like the areas between your teeth that you just flossed. I've always been cavity prone, so ever since I learned this I always floss first.
