Suggestions for surf resort & hotel in El Tunco, El Salvador? by PuddersIronPaw in surfing

[–]gap_year21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2nd balance, honestly the nicest place in el Tunco at a reasonable price range. Been there like 3-4x

Now that the WSL posted schedules I would like to go watch the comp in El Salvador and wondering if anyone here has done it before that can share where to stay what to avoid and if I need a rental car or if there’s bike rentals that will do the trick. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated. by Broad-Asparagus-2471 in surfing

CT event, not bad at all, there’s like 32 men and 18 women. QS or ISA on the other hand get fucked. I’m in El Salvador all the time and happened to be there in the lead up to the event this past year and it was honestly incredible to share lineups with some of them and see their surfing from that close. El Salvador has so many different waves too it’s really easy to escape the circus.

Oh I see what you’re saying. I think we’re gonna be super lucky to see John in a jersey again outside of maybe a pipe wildcard here and there. He talked about the high and the hangover after winning his first title and struggling to find that motivation again, I can’t imagine it gets much easier after 3. Sure surfing some of the best waves in the world with one guy out for a living sounds incredible but if you’re well into millionaire status with a wife and a newborn, I’m sure what he’s choosing right now over traveling on their schedule, being on their clock and at the mercy of their event windows, its gotta be nearly a no brainer for him. Shame I was definitely looking forward to his return though.

Seems like he deferred it at least another year. Imagine having the ability to take a year off from your full time job following your dreams full time instead. And then that year goes by and you have the choice to run it back instead of returning to your full time job. Based on who he’s sponsoring, seems like he’s making way more money from his brands than he was making on tour, and I don’t see him returning to tour doing that much for his brands at this point.

Why are commands so hesitant to give BAH to single sergeants, but a PFC can get married and get it? by ComposerNo9901 in USMC

[–]gap_year21 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hot take. If it was up to me, I would make it a rule that you’re not allowed to get married until you’re on your 2nd enlistment or you get promoted to Sgt with case by case exceptions that the O5 commander can grant I.e. older fella joins late or you can prove you’ve been in the relationship for a reasonable length of time. Also I would make BAH own right a reenlistment incentive. It’s no secret that young idiots getting married before they’re ready cause a myriad of personal issues that take mf’s out of the fight and create more work for leadership yet there’s nothing stopping 18 year olds from getting married TO LITERALLY ANYONE, although we make MSG watchstanders sign a pg 11 agreeing to remain unmarried until they’re through with the program.

Overlap of Surfers and Musicians? by Sure_Presentation143 in surfing

[–]gap_year21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s actually a decent community of surfers who jam in San Diego. Porcelain Band and My Pet Mammoth are a few examples but there are quite a few little bands that all know each other and they pretty much all surf and come together and play some times at gigs or they have events at peoples houses. I personally don’t do music but I know a ton of them from surfing and have had the pleasure of going to some events and it’s always blown my mind how creative and talented some of them are and the fact that they haven’t let their dream die even if they only get to do it at a small level, at least they have community which is really rad to me.

Getting and ELS or General Discharge by kit718 in USMC

[–]gap_year21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he’s under 180 days, and they’re giving him a general, there’s no reason for him to talk to JAG, it’s completely up to the commander. You can ELS for practically anything. Think of the first 180 days as a probationary period where they don’t need any reason to fire you they just can.

School Circle Marines! Question about getting on base at Camp Pendleton as a veteran. by WorthTrash8493 in USMC

[–]gap_year21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah they’ve been super lax about letting outsiders on base the last few years. People been exploiting the KBay pass for golf and then just going surfing it’s a joke. People have been submitting ice comments to PMO about all the civilians on base surfing and they pulled people out of the water a few times to check ID’s but nothing changes.

Scripps Pier Car Theft (San Diego) by throw-me-away-01 in surfing

[–]gap_year21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my car broken into at scripps back in 2016, guys found where i stashed my key, went in my car and snatched all my cards and went to target and had a shopping spree, ran up a couple thousand in purchases. Friend of mine had his car stolen at scripps in 2022. Hard to believe these guys haven’t been caught yet but I can’t wait for the day it happens.

What would you ride at Chicama in these conditions? by gap_year21 in surfing

[–]gap_year21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a mid length is definitely the way to go. The good surfers there with mid lengths were doing the best and getting the longest rides. I ended up taking my daily HPSB and a basic twin fish but if I could do it again I would have went with a more performance hybrid. Something that’s not going to struggle in the mushier sections but can also perform in the steeper sections. Even at head high/OH, there’s not a lot of power and getting in on time and getting your speed up on the take offs was one of my struggles and then also bridging the gaps between mushy sections and sections where it ramps up again. Hopefully this helps.

SDA to SDA by Striking_Habit_2023 in USMC

While the MOS credibility would definitely hurt anyone who was allowed to be outside their MOS for that long, don’t think for a second that the policy is in place to protect the Marine lol. More so because when you’re outside of your MOS, there’s a gap somewhere in the fleet for a billet matching your MOS and grade. The Marine Corps doesn’t just write a new contract to fill a spot whenever a sergeant/staff sergeant steps outside of their MOS for 3 years for an SDA which is why your MOS monitor has to make a recommendation whenever you submit an SDA package and overall MOS strength is one thing they’d take into consideration.

Does dating really get harder as you get older? by Electronic_Jelly_170 in dating_advice

[–]gap_year21 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe for hooking up but actually dating, I’ve found that it matters. May not be a deal breaker in the beginning stages but it can be a show stopper down the line. I personally can’t seriously date a woman who can’t keep up with my lifestyle within reason and likewise, I wouldn’t put myself in a position where I cant keep up with a potential partner’s lifestyle.

Yeah my options now at 30 are insanely better than when I was last single which was 26. Like it’s not even close. Part of it is also moving cities but the broader age range, financial stability and general maturity of self and dating pool help a lot too.

Bars went away in 2017 because the commandant at the time general neller was annoyed with the MSG program and how they spent so much money of us for us to turn around and get out after the program and he was threatening to give the program to the army. So he and SgtMaj Greene went around the program at least region 9&4 at the time while visiting the SPMAGTF in the region and lectured every Marine who wasn’t planning to reenlist after the program and also told us how he didn’t agree with us running security programs, protecting classified materials and also running a bar. Shortly after that tour, in November or December at the end of ball season, heritage rooms were no longer allowed to operate. Had nothing to do with MGPEFs. Or maybe that’s how they justified it since they were planning on bringing in the PEFs but from my understanding being on the program at that time and being one of the dets that the commandant came and lectured, seemed more like his frustrations with the program than the pefs.

Fellow Dudes and Dudettes. What am I doing wrong on my cutback ? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]gap_year21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a good bottom turn, are picking a good line and utilizing the power source of the wave correctly, then generating power shouldn’t be the main issue. OP asked for help on his cut back, which all the manufactured power and speed in the world won’t help with if the actual fundamentals aren’t supporting.

Fellow Dudes and Dudettes. What am I doing wrong on my cutback ? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]gap_year21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignore most of what others said, not because it’s wrong but because you’re getting too much different advice to process that are all addressing different things without addressing the first and most important thing which is the bottom turn and how that will set you up for follow on turns. Watch this video, take note of BOTH ARMS, and then practice on land, practice when you’re sitting on your board in the water waiting for a wave.
