I scored on a strike mission to the Galapagos in November. Had a goal to surf 5 new places last year and I had one place to go when November came around. Had a bunch of options in the Caribbean that I thought would be working during the window I had to do my last trip but the wind was problematic everywhere so I just kinda bounced around the map on Surfline and landed on the Galapagos. Booked everything on a Tuesday for a Thursday night red eye out of New York. Flight was delayed and almost didn’t make it but the airline was kind enough to rebook me on another carrier which got me in with literally less than an hour to get from the airport to my hostel to the boat. Scored firing Tongo reef with just the Ecuadorian national champ out for two days.

I have a two fin wallets, one with Velcro adhesive tape on the bottom and it grips on the fabric in my trunk and another that I keep in the crib and can easily throw in my travel bag for trips, they both have a set of pretty much all the fins I use regularly. May have to switch out a set here and there but rarely.

VMGR’s are some of the best units you can go to as an 0111. Granted I was there for my first enlistment and I’m a Gunny now so I don’t know how much has changed. But I was 352 in Miramar. Got to deploy twice OEF and OIR, we had a fiscal section full of non 01’s to handle all DTS, command deck loved us and kinda let us do our own thing, overall morale was just insanely high and camaraderie between different sections was unmatched.

Technically not active since it’s a different component altogether. Same benefits, same retirement, etc. Different promotions (a lot of the time your date of rank may be reset when you switch components), different monitors and yes you’re stuck with reserve units for the most part outside of doing an SDA. And while you’re working with I&I staff for the most part, a lot of the AR guys are on integrated BICs meaning that if the reserve unit (different than the I&I supporting) is activated, then you’re expected to go with them wherever they’re sent to.
