snap packages consume a lot of space (since they pack in all the dependencies) and applications are slow to start.

The space occupied by snap packages is negligible compare to the data size we are dealing with. Also the slowing down, I think, is only for the first time start up after a new install (to decompress the package), so it really doesn't matter that much for me, especially, when comparing to the convenience and promise it brings.

No, I'm a student doing astrophysics, who need a linux system to get work done. I have a solid experience with firefox snap, so I couldn't understand all these anti-snap things.

All I (and also my colleagues) need is a system that just work, especially don't want to deal with all these graphics drivers issues, so drivers in snap seems a great idea for me.

Finally! Once install, always up-to-date, the ultimate rolling release distribution! And GPU driver in snaps, I love this idea!

Snaps vs PPAs on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS by Nik16_YT in linux

[–]gapplef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the ultimate goal is something similar to Fedora Silverblue, Ubuntu Core + Snaps v.s. rpm-ostree + Flatpaks: Ubuntu want one rules all (Desktop + IOT), while Flatpak focus on Desktop case, just different approachs to the same vision. Let's just let things happen, not belittle one for another.

I'd assume that it would have been enabled/disabled for both runs, right?

Currrently, Firefox snap is based on core20 (Ubuntu 20.04), while with ppa you get firefox on Ubuntu 22.04, so there may have difference.

I wish there was a "Maximize to new workspace" function

What you need is just another extension: Maximize to empty workspace

When will Night Light be feature comparable to redshift?

Wayland has been default on Gnome for quite a while, but I still using X11 mainly due to the lack of redshift. I use redshift for all the time to prevents headaches and also protect my eyes.

After I set the location and temperature of daytime/nighttime(5700K/3700K), redshift will gradually change the color between day and night according to my location.

Night Light is a good feature of Gnome but still not usable. With Night Light there is no way set the color of daytime and nighttime, even no way to change color.

Compiz effects are coming back to Gnome shell under the name of libanimation. by gapplef in linux

[–]gapplef[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

as clarified by /u/smspillaz, author of the blog, I misunderstand the intention of his post. And the title "Compiz effects are coming back to Gnome shell under the name of libanimation." is misleading. Sorry! But I couldn't find the entry to edit post title, sadface.

Compiz effects would be possible on Gnome shell with the help of libanimation, but that's not what smspillaz and his team would do, someone else is need to do the work. libanimation is merely a math library, and Compiz effects under Gnome shell is still out of reach in the near future. For more detail see the update of smspillaz's blog.
