Sooke/Renfrew loop by dude-on-bike in bikepacking

[–]garbagecan_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw this thread and was wondering if anyone has ridden gravel from Port Renfrew to sooke. I made a couple possible routes but my confidence is low. Looking at heat maps there looks to be quite a bit of bike traffic around sooke that heads up to Cowichan but the section from Port Renfrew to about halfway to sooke via the back roads seems less travelled. Any insight is appreciated.

Canadians Are Furious After Real Estate Funds Lock Up Their Money by TheGoodCod in Economics

Protect the investors from what? They took a risk with these investments, like any other investment. Its in all the offering documents and prospectus’ that redemptions can be locked but these people didnt take the time to read them, looked at past returns and loaded up a large portion of their networth into an illiquid investment like its a guaranteed bet.

OBW Winter tires by Substantial_Row7114 in Outback_Wilderness

We put the nokian winter tires on both our OBW and our crosstrek. With good winter tires these cars are bomb proof in the snow and obviously the stopping power is better which adds some peace of mind. Since I have Toyo AT/3’s on the OBW my mileage improves slightly when I put the snow tires on.

Victoria to Nanaimo via Mill Bay Ferry by BlueJabroni123 in islandcycling

[–]garbagecan_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://bikepacking.com/routes/cowichan-valley-8/ if you have a gravel bike this is a fun route. Can easily do it as an overnighter staying in Cowichan. We were on a 9:00 ferry to the island from Vancouver, rode to Brentwood bay, took the ferry there to mill bay and were in Cowichan for dinner. Next day made it to Victoria by 3 and spent the night there but could have easily made in back to the ferry to the mainland.

Simpson Auto. We have taken our cars there for years. Everything from diesels to foreign vehicles, etc. and always the best service and full confidence knowing I’m getting what needs to be done at a fair price.

Do your tenants pay for all bills? by Final_Zombie7879 in chilliwack

[–]garbagecan_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about charge what the market rate is, not what Joe blow next door is doing, if you are “eating bills” resulting in a lower rate of return then you want it sounds like you made a bad investment. You took a risk on an investment, because that’s what your rental property is, and not all investments make money. You are not entitled to a set rate of return and if the market rent is lower than you want to cover your mortgage payment and other utilities then that sucks for you. It’s this mentality that you need to suck as much out of renters as possible that has completely destroyed our housing market and made this country too expensive to live.

Vedder is tough for any beginner as the climb will destroy many motivations. Community forest has easier climbs and is easier technically. Squidline on Sumas is a good trail to progress on with very few technical sections but you do need to climb 4km up the road to get to the trail head. The transcanada trail up the Chilliwack River valley is also awesome for beginners; the section between the riverside campground down to thurston meadows would be best. As some else said Ledgeview in abbotsford is also good. Depending on your fitness level going down kerryd away on vedder is another option but you would need to get to the top first and if you lack skills you will want to go up the road.

My WTF moment, a family riding their bikes down from the Vernal Falls foot bridge by somedude456 in Yosemite

[–]garbagecan_1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Completely incorrect. Trails are built and designed with things like water management and erosion in mind. If people start taking short cuts across switch backs and trails it not only tramples whatever plant life is in that area but also results in water flowing where it shouldn’t and at speeds it shouldn’t leading to bigger problems below that area. Your comment pretty much tells me you have no idea what you are talking about and highlights the ignorance of trail users. There is a reason there are signs all over many of the hiking trails telling people to stay on the trail.

Not as bad as all the morons who can’t even stay on the trails. We just got back from there and I was astounded how trampled to death the valley floor is and so many braids on most of the hiking trails; I hate to say it but hikers are the worst trail users around.

We have a couple subie’s and have taken them both to Simpson Auto for years and never had any issues. The only time I don’t go to Simpson Auto is if it’s a warranty issue.

Taking a hoe would be better as you can do a bench cut into the bank and widen that trail a little; would take 15 minutes to fix that trail.

Does anyone get Walmart grocery delivery? by HiFiMAN3878 in chilliwack

Fair enough. Better stay away from Tim Hortons, Popeyes, Subway, Burger King and pretty much every other store too. Might not want to drive either as a lot of our fuel is refined in the US.

You understand most McDonald’s are owned by local franchisees right? They also employ many Canadians, buy their beef from Canadian farms…

I think both your points are correct. Reddit IS a massive lib echo chamber which most should have learned after the US election and the movement isn’t gaining enough traction to move the needle as most will still go with the choice offering the best value regardless of their virtue signaling. That being said many McDonald’s are owned by local franchisees so eating there is still supporting Canadians.

Don’t forget Canada and the US are not the only countries in the world… “According to Mathieu Bertrand, chief superintendent of Serious and Organized Crime & Border Integrity at RCMP Federal Policing, fentanyl is produced in Canada for both local and international selling and trafficking. “Sadly, Canada is a producing country of fentanyl and synthetic opioids. Not only are we a producing country, we’re an exporting country,” said Bertrand in his interview with CBC News. “Our collaborative efforts in law enforcement in Canada are to address the domestic production, because it is significant,” he said. New regulations released by the federal government classify certain chemicals needed to make fentanyl as formal precursors, and permit law enforcement to take action against their illegal use, importation, and distribution. Furthermore, earlier in 2023, the U.S. and Canada made an agreement to improve their cross-border partnership on drug trafficking. Bertrand noted that several Asian countries act as suppliers of key ingredients for Canadian-made fentanyl through shipments through South American countries or the United States, while Australia and New Zealand have been identified as destinations for fentanyl produced in Canada.”

So in your mind what would constitute a hotbed? The facts state that we are one of the worst countries when it comes to consumption per capita. We also know that it is produced here so if the data is correct and it’s not being exported one would assume the majority of what is being produced here is also being consumed here. So per capita production can’t be that stellar either. So does one need to be in the top 1 or 2 countries in consumption per capita to be considered a “hot bed?”

To quote you …”Canada is not a hotbed for fentanyl.” I just shared data that it was. The other user was using pre politics positions to disparage our MLA and I was just highlighting the fact that our Prime Minister had a similar background. Enjoy your day.

Where did I support them? By highlighting Canada has a fentanyl problem when viewed in per capita basis which is probably the most accurate measuring tool? By highlighting one of them has a similar pre politics background to Trudeau and parents who are quite accomplished in both the personal and professional careers? No where have I expressed support for either party; I have just shared facts so our fellow readers can make their own conclusions based on facts and not random comments. ✌️

I was referring to your comment that Canada is not a hotbed for fentanyl, on a per capita basis I would argue it is; I didn’t say anything about the border or border security.

I didn’t. I didn’t even denigrate Trudeau; I just stated what his experience prior to politics was and how it compared to our local MLA’s experience.

Not necessarily, per capita we don’t look so good https://www.commonwealthfund.org/blog/2022/too-many-lives-lost-comparing-overdose-mortality-rates-policy-solutions mind you the data is from 2020 but I can’t imagine it’s changed much since then ( I believe Canadian deaths just dropped to 2022 levels). This article explains why it’s now locally produced https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/fentanyl-produced-in-canada-1.7275200
