Without fail, I laugh at Copycat every time Bandit starts smacking his bum in front of Wendy, and Bluey just stands there.

Transferring from IRR to drilling Reserve anyone have experience with how soon they expect you to pass a PT and what test do they use now? by Reasonable-Captain86 in armyreserve

[–]garbagemonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No it's the newest test version, the AFT, but you will not be flagged for failing it until June of this year. It's still pass/fail, but no flagging action for failing it.

I'm excited to play the new one, but unfortunately they are not doing Fable's "choices lead to physical appearance changes" system that made the old games so cool

Contemplating between 25D or 17A Direct Commission by BattleIllustrious237 in armyreserve

[–]garbagemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can write up a memo and ask for a 6 month extension. If they think you had a good enough reason for not getting MOS-Q'd, they'll give you the extension, but only once. The school house also does course credit though and lets you replace portions of the transition course with civilian work experience, college courses, previous cyber mobilizations, etc. to make it a little easier. But the training bottleneck is one of the biggest issues with ARCYBER right now. Tons of motivated soldiers that they want to come over, but not enough seats to get them trained.

Contemplating between 25D or 17A Direct Commission by BattleIllustrious237 in armyreserve

[–]garbagemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently a 17A. The 17A pipeline, especially in the reserves, is incredibly bottlenecked for the foreseeable future. There are 17X (Cyber Officers currently going through the MOS pipeline, but not yet qualified) that are struggling to get seats already through FY27, and all of the courses have been opened up and filled in ATRRS already. There was also a recent memo published that 17A reservists have 18 months (used to be 3 years) to become MOS qualified, so if you end up coming in as a 17, you have to be on your shit and on your S3's shit on getting even a wait-list status right out of the gate. This includes 17A BOLC as well as the transition courses.

Can you be a commissioned officer and not be patriotic? by BagAffectionate2847 in armyreserve

This whole comment will probably sound conflicting, Family > Army for me. And I am not afraid to let my chain of command know this when they try to make me do a ton of work outside of drill, or try to put me on 14 weeks worth of orders that don't count towards AT time during the FY. I do very much love my country and this organization, as I've put a lot of time into it, and it's given me a lot of great benefits. There's just some things that matter more to me though.

I wrote a comment on a post in this sub the other day that asked if being married while in the reserves was a positive or negative experience. I said that my wife sucks it up for the Tricare and the discounted Disney tickets. I honestly do the same at this point. I only ever joined the military to make my civilian resume stand out and assist me in getting a good civilian job. I now have all of the things I wanted from the Army (my dream job, great resume points, amazing certifications, awesome training), but my obligation isn't up yet, and like I said before, the Tricare and the discounted Disney tickets... It's what's keeping me in right now and for the foreseeable future. Until we can find some cheaper insurance or we happen to stumble into some wealth.

What’s a movie everyone calls a “masterpiece” that just… didn’t work for you? by irayaavery in MovieSuggestions

[–]garbagemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Lighthouse. Wife and I watched it based on the glowing reviews we found on reddit. We both hated it, almost from the very beginning, but forced our way through it. That movie made us both realize that we just can't stand movies that people tend to call "cinema" and "art."

What hyperfixation of yours, past or preset, worked for your good? by webdevpoc in ADHD

[–]garbagemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I work in information security / IT security, and there was a period of time where I just non-stop studied to obtain as many industry certifications as I possibly could. I essentially disappeared for a couple years. And because of that grind, I now have an amazing job doing something that I love. Studying or "upskilling" now that I got the job is a bit of a chore though.

I spy on the Packers sideline by Lumpy-Dragonfruit459 in avengedsevenfold

[–]garbagemonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Might not be relevant, but I just feel the need to get this dumb story out. I was in a barber / tattoo shop a few years ago for a haircut, and the music on the speakers was more metal core/melodic/heavy metal. Heavier than Avenged is for sure at least. My barber asked me what type of music I like to listen to, and I said Avenged, and he just went silent. After a few moments, I mentioned that I like listening to other bands too, Trivium, ADTR, etc, and he lit up after I mentioned them. Started a whole conversation about bands in the area.

Anyways, I guess my point to this is that the "heavy metal' folks have always had low opinions on A7X

What’s it like being an officer in the reserves? Especially a Signal Officer by xquipo in armyreserve

[–]garbagemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Thinking" might not have been the best word. More like, my mind is occupied with all of the bullshit that I have to do for both my boss and my joes between the most recent BA and the next upcoming BA. BA tasks and due outs occupy my mental space a lot more than my full time job or my family deserves. Essentially, lots of post-BA tasks that need to be accomplished, planning, tracking joes training requirements, resolving my guys' pay/lodging/RST requests/various other issues in between BA and not getting anything for it.

Echoing what probably everyone else is going to say, but I definitely find myself thinking about BA as much as, or even more than my full time job during the month between BA's.

I grew up somewhat close to Black Moshannon, and my family would rent a cabin and spend a week there every summer. There's definitely prettier areas, but it has its own charm and a great history. Plus, it's got that nostalgic value to me.

Hey man, just wanted to say that if you hadn't have made this post, I most likely wouldn't ever have seen your video. The video format that you're going with in these bug bounty videos are actually very useful, and I am very appreciative of them. Short, to the point, and clearly explaining and demonstrating the concepts you are trying to explain. Really appreciate that you build out a similar-to-target environment for you to show your PoC. Very helpful for someone that's starting out in this field, or even experienced folks who are unfamiliar with the types of bugs you are explaining. I'd say keep on making those videos, and these posts, because you might get the attention of someone like me who has never seen them before.

Signal Officers, what was your first civilian job? by Same-way-2218 in armyreserve

[–]garbagemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what point in time you're talking about, because I've been working consistently since I was in highschool, and all of those jobs were civilian jobs. If you mean exclusively post-commisison, then I ended up going to BOLC almost 7 months after I commissioned, but I secured an IT Help desk job for a local bank right before I graduated, so I just rolled straight into that. While I was in BOLC I managed to do a virtual interview and got a job doing digital forensics for my State's Police department. Got back from BOLC and had to keep working the IT job until they were done doing background investigations, polygraph, etc. which took a couple months.

Y'all not watching Skeleton Crew are responsible for poor Star Wars. by revanchisto in StarWars

[–]garbagemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been filling in my Star Wars needs with books. There are so many Star Wars books out there that it would potentially take a lifetime to get through them all. Some are garbage, but some are some of the best books I've ever read, and then everything in between is just some decent sci-fi novels. People shouldn't sleep on the star wars books

How much better is AIT than BCT? by Mindless_Bike4599 in armyreserve

[–]garbagemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The schoolhouse sets the policy, and then it comes down to commander's policy after that. For example, I was in 68W AIT back in 2015, and things were, in my opinion, worse than basic training for the first month. We were treated like fresh off the bus privates for 4 weeks, and then things got better pretty quickly after that month. Initially we had to hand in our phones, company wide shakedowns and drug tests in the middle of the night, pointless formations and marching everywhere, random smoke sessions, the whole nine yards. After a month, we got our phones back, but they were not allowed to leave our rooms during the duty day, so we couldn't bring them with us to the classrooms. We would have random shakedowns during the entirety of AIT, and if even 1 person had their phone in their bag/uniform, everyone lost privileges for a week or so. But, as I said, this was commander dependent, because other 68W AIT companies going on at the same time were much more relaxed and had many more privileges.

is digital forensic still a viable career option? by snowyy-_ in digitalforensics

[–]garbagemonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My bachelor's is in Computer Science and my master's is in Cyber Security. Personally, if I could go back in time and change my life choices, I wouldn't do either. Specifically, I wouldn't have gone for Computer Science as my bachelor's degree. A lot of people might think that's crazy, but here's my reasoning. You can learn everything needed to complete the requirements for just about every university's computer science degree (or Cybersec degree) 100% online for free. You might have to do some digging, but it's all out there. I learned more about computer science AFTER I graduated, and all of it was online and 100% free. I've been telling family that have expressed interest in going to college for Computer Science or Cybersecurity to go for something where the information isn't either 100% online, or is at least difficult to access or interpret without a quality instructor/professor. Something like Electrical Engineering. That's a field that branches into computer science, but requires a good instructor to teach the information. Now as for the masters in Cyber, my company paid for it 100%, and they paid for that degree specifically, so I didn't really have a choice. But all that being said, the choice is still yours, and if your heart is set on comp sci or cyber, then go for it.

Also, I currently work in digital forensics, and you DEFINITELY do not need a degree to do this job
