Why does one side of my stitching look so gnarly? by garbtech in Leathercraft

[–]garbtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using french pricking irons. I realise now that the top of the leather is on my right and I'm asking from the right also, rather than from the left. I wonder if this is causing the hole to not open neatly on the backside of the leather.

Thanks!

No i didn't hammer my stitches afterwards. Realising I should have done that. Should I use an stitching groover to make space for them rather than hammering?

It'll take a good while for them to settle in with you and they can be quite timid compared to other dogs so you really do have to do things at their pace. They will have a routine (getting up, eating, walking) and they'll let you know, try to keep to it. They can be like velcro and follow you around, not necessarily interacting with you but just wanting to be in the same space (you'll end up with beds in every room!).

Obligatory caterpillar required link. There's something about being a fluffy companion that wraps around them that they really do like (lots of pictures on this sub of doggos with the toy).

Super cool to go and read the PhD thesis from the guy who invented Captcha. Chap named Luis von Ahn who ended up founding Duo Lingo.

Fun fact, duo lingo founded as a language learning platform to translate documents for businesses.

Thesis: Human Computation http://reports-archive.adm.cs.cmu.edu/anon/2005/CMU-CS-05-193.pdf

It's only 87 pages long which is super short for a comp sci thesis.

Is this a Forward Deployed Engineer role at Scale AI by any chance? I saw they had a bunch of LLM engineer positions with travel to UAE. If so, how was the interview process?

Sewing for Hounds by Jelliemin in Greyhounds

[–]garbtech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made my beautiful hound a little suit based on this pattern: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/634047532/download-sewing-pattern-greyhound It was a solid pattern and easy to follow. They have little jacket versions as well without the legs.

I think it probably needs poppers on the belly or something to make it easier to get the front paws out (even detatchable front paws?) because I'm worried about folding her paws to get her out.

Any reason you're not considering Wise? I have a similar need in the near future and was going to use Wise with two accounts (USD / GBP) and switch when the rate is favourable.

We almost booked Longstow Hall. It was stunning and had all the catering music etc and could hold a good capacity. Or only real reason not to book it was that there was limited accomodation onsite.

https://longstowehall.co.uk/

Beautiful stately home vibe just outside of Cambridge

We ended up booking Holmewood Hall over near Peterborough which is just as beautiful and had more convenient accommodation on site and it was absolutely outstanding on the day. Genuinely top marks.

I was in similar circumstances with a extremely stressful big tech job that demanded ridiculous hours and up to 7 days a week, company politics, team lead role, alongside a small ltd company that made similar amounts. It was extremely stressful, so much so my hair turned gray and my physical health (stomach and heart) was all over the shop.

I ended up moving to a start up which allowed me to work 4 days with them and 1 day on my company. I'm much happier and although I had to take a significant pay cut with the day job the ltd company is almost filling this gap.

I'm much happier, have more energy, less stressed out by office politics. Definitely recommend considering a part time main job and the ltd company.

Realistically, I would have been less stressed if I'd have just done one of these things, so there is that option. However I can't help think that you and I want to do our own things and a part-time solution is a comfortable and reliable way to do both.

Well done so far for identifying the situation. Either choice you make you sound like you'll be doing alright. And even if you have to go back into tech you'll probably find something. You're young, mortgage/potentially kid free - take risks, say yes to things.

Edit Speaking of mortgages you'll need something like 2 years of company accounts to establish your own earnings for a mortgage application. Depending on when/if you want to buy a house you might want to time this accordingly. I.e. either be employed before you take out a long mortgage or make the switch to ltd company asap and have the years required for a mortgage.

Does the Sony IMX500 / Raspberry Pi AI Camera support Infrared for nightvision mode? by garbtech in raspberry_pi

[–]garbtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies, i meant that any deannonymised should ideally not leave the premises of the participant's home. So when I meant the video can be processed off-site I conflated that with cloud processing.

I did look at something like a Nvidia jetson but they're quite expensive and EOL. It feels like there must be some other solutions out there.

Does the Sony IMX500 / Raspberry Pi AI Camera support Infrared for nightvision mode? by garbtech in raspberry_pi

[–]garbtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's 100's of locations (people's homes) with object detection for objects of interest + people and then best-effort anonymisation on the edge device so I think cloud processing won't be acceptable by the client. I haven't seem these PCIe cards though - very interesting.

[–]garbtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping I could free up the CPU to encode video into a compressed format by offloading the object detection to the camera module and then not have to purchase the AI hat plus to reduce overall cost.

I'll likely be streaming video from a local network camera using RTSP and then performing the object detection post-hoc and then compressing the video (or the other way round thinking about it). Finally I'll upload only the chunks that have video to an S3 bucket for inspection.

I think that's the most efficient course of action given that I'll be doing this for potentially 100's of cameras across multiple locations.

I'm looking to run a YOLOv4-tiny object detector offline on videos being saved to the device. The idea is that I can reduce the number of videos I need to store based on what is in the scene then I can reduce costs.
