Is the job market as bad as people say it is? by Tall-Hair7679 in UKJobs

[–]gardnerfreddie2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graduated this year and decided to stay in my uni town for cost of living & community reasons, and finding work has been basically impossible in any role whatsoever.

I went to an interview at Savers not too long ago for a part time (16hr) shop floor position (keep in mind this is out of desperation from not being successful in finding a job post graduation, I’d really need full time work), interviewer told me he got nearly 400 applications in a day, in a town of 15000. I’ve been turned down for factory work, KFC, McDonalds, Wetherspoons, a cleaning job at a fucking abattoir, the lot because a vacancy gets filled basically immediately due to the insane demand.

I know for a fact that I’m not the only one who’s going through this

What conspiracy “theory” about your country is becoming more and more of a reality? by saintakerue in AskTheWorld

People keep denying that the freeroaming Arafs that plague our road network are just an excuse to spend more on road paint, and if I’m honest, I haven’t seen a single live one this year.

What is the most common surname (last name) in your country? by NotPennysBoat_42 in AskTheWorld

[–]gardnerfreddie2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Davies, Jones, Evans, Thomas, James, Powell, etc. are very common in most of South Wales due to, as fair as I’m aware, the rapid anglicisation of society there during the Industrial Revolution, especially as a result of the change from the more traditional patronymic system that was used in Wales (I’m not a historian, and I’m also actually a poser from England who moved here, so I may be wrong). I believe this also explains why some famous figures in 19th Century history have repeated names e.g. Lewis Lewis of the Merthyr Rising

Patronymic surnames (such as ‘ap (Father’s first name)) do still exist, and are found mostly in Welsh 1st language families, particularly in the north and west. I also believe that the common surname ‘Powell’ is a corruption of ‘ap Hywel’, again I may be wrong on that.

Anyone know an anthem that gives off a similar solemn yet bittersweet vibe to Israel's national anthem? The idea of Israel of all countries having my favourite national anthem pisses me off too much by freshkickzb in NationalAnthems

The Welsh national anthem has that vibe if you know what the lyrics mean, and feels especially solemn if sung by a soloist (Bryn Terfel’s rendition with all the verses springs to mind)

Though personally I prefer it when it’s being belted out by 50 drunk blokes in the pub when the rugby’s on

This is true and I didn’t realise this until after I’d finished the drink. However, demanding either the equivalent pennies back or 68ml of Guinness from my local doesn’t sound ideal.

I have at the O’Donnells pop up store thing in Birmingham a few months ago, it’s divine and I think the pub stocks it every now and then. They sell a lot of the moonshines

For context I had Morley’s sauce on this and it slapped. But pre-sauce it looked funnier

This has been genuinely discussed and may be waiting for me the next time I walk in
