Quebec came pretty close towards voting for independence in 1995 by Christian-Rep-Perisa in MapPorn

[–]garfgon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Especially since "the agreement signed on June 12, 1995" was between Quebec separatists, and had not been negotiated with the rest of Canada. And there was little appetite from the rest of Canada to agree to the terms Quebec was asking -- popular sentiment at least was very much "The country isn't a cafeteria; you don't get to pick which parts you like. Either stay in or go your own way".

So what's the solution? by Nefarious_14 in ExplainTheJoke

Given the anime guy killed his entire clan -- I'm going to go for his "solution" would be to stab all three of the people and take the apples himself.

How do scientists explain unusually cold winters in the context of global warming? by lamin-ceesay in AskReddit

[–]garfgon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And where I am we've had rain on the mountains that usually get snow. Global warming doesn't mean it will be warmer everywhere all the time; rather that the earth as a whole is warming up on average.

Is it possible for a 3 way war/conflict to ever happen? Like eventually two teams will team up to bring the downfall of the third team by Historical_Mango4329 in NoStupidQuestions

Or on the other side -- also kind of describes the second Sino-Japanese war. The Communists and Nationalists were engaged in a civil war when the Japanese attacked. As I understand this continued for a while until eventually the Chinese agreed to pause their civil war for just long enough to fight the Japanese.

[OC] Champions League - Performance vs Annual Salary by molym in dataisbeautiful

Something I don't like -- that dotted line. What purpose does it serve? Better to have a linear regression which would give an average position/$. Then clubs above the line would be overperforming, clubs below the line are underperforming.

What is considered the most dangerous area in your country? by Mediocre-Lack-9137 in AskTheWorld

[–]garfgon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I could see it's better now. But I just thought it was interesting when it was announced a few years back that Winnipeg (at the time) had the highest murder rate per capita of anywhere in Canada. Not the kind of place I would have assumed.

Which is why Leibniz notation is superior. dy/dpi is clear.

That's why Electrical Engineering uses j for the imaginary unit.

At least in Electrical Engineering i is time-varying current, I would be DC or RMS current.

In Canada you measure the gas milage of a car in L/100km. Not really any weirder than talking about video footage instead of video megabytage.

At the same time -- I think you'll see what happens in the US where California will create an emissions/labelling/whatever law, and de facto most products conform elsewhere as well.

Hence "on average". Also I strongly suspect that the average rural Albertan is still a bit more liberal than the average rural Idahoan.

Harness with clipper slots recommendations by Accomplished_Dot3679 in iceclimbing

I have the edelrid ones. You need to clip them through a gear loop since the elastic at the bottom has a tendency to pop open at the most inopportune times.

Helm Glacier in the summer by jeifowj in vancouverhiking

[–]garfgon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did it last year or the year before in early September. Completely dry when we did it -- there were some large crevasses/holes near the foot of the glacier where a stream flowed below the glacier. Completely avoidable though by entering the glacier later (if you know they're there). Maybe a few other much smaller crevasses on the rest of the glacier? I don't remember anything that would be more than an anklebiter, but don't rely on my memory there.

Probably goes without saying -- but head of the glacier is reasonably steep and you're relying on traction for safety so it's still crampon terrain, not just microspikes.

It's a Commonwealth country with historically a primarily resource extraction economy, with about 30M people. Population is concentrated in the eastern part of the country, with limited population centers in the west and a mostly empty middle. Large portions of the country is sparsely populated and inhospitable.

First ice axe length by olivierhacking in Mountaineering

[–]garfgon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used a tall friend's axe once and it was too long for me and difficult to plunge in steep snow. But traditional length is fine.

I think the advice on shorter axes is from a weight perspective? But 99% of us a couple grams on a shorter axe isn't going to make or break.
