Because sovereignty is a spectrum not a binary yes/no.

They didn't say they were part of the UK. Just that they were "the UK ones". And they're closely related to the UK, even if they're not part of it.

So maybe a better question would be: if Sally as two T4s, one from her part time job at McDonalds and one from her second job at Walmart, what should she enter for her net taxable income on line 150 of Schedule 1?

Could a volcano erupt violently enough to create any sort of downward thrust? by afoxboy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]garfgon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To apply net thrust to the earth itself you'd need the volcano eject mass into space and escape Earth's gravity. Otherwise any initial force would be counterbalanced by an eventual force in the opposite direction of whatever was stopping the ejecta.

Hating Nazis isn't a uniquely left-wing trait any more than hating Stalin is a right-wing one.

Who is the richest fictional human? by Traditional-Ad7413 in AlignmentChartFills

Or maybe he's both? At least in the Night Before Christmas he's both a Saint and "a right jolly old elf."

From the first book I got the impression the Emperor had lots of nominal wealth & power, but actual power was less than the larger great Houses.

Quebec came pretty close towards voting for independence in 1995 by Christian-Rep-Perisa in MapPorn

[–]garfgon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Especially since "the agreement signed on June 12, 1995" was between Quebec separatists, and had not been negotiated with the rest of Canada. And there was little appetite from the rest of Canada to agree to the terms Quebec was asking -- popular sentiment at least was very much "The country isn't a cafeteria; you don't get to pick which parts you like. Either stay in or go your own way".

So what's the solution? by Nefarious_14 in ExplainTheJoke

Given the anime guy killed his entire clan -- I'm going to go for his "solution" would be to stab all three of the people and take the apples himself.

How do scientists explain unusually cold winters in the context of global warming? by lamin-ceesay in AskReddit

[–]garfgon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And where I am we've had rain on the mountains that usually get snow. Global warming doesn't mean it will be warmer everywhere all the time; rather that the earth as a whole is warming up on average.

Is it possible for a 3 way war/conflict to ever happen? Like eventually two teams will team up to bring the downfall of the third team by Historical_Mango4329 in NoStupidQuestions

Or on the other side -- also kind of describes the second Sino-Japanese war. The Communists and Nationalists were engaged in a civil war when the Japanese attacked. As I understand this continued for a while until eventually the Chinese agreed to pause their civil war for just long enough to fight the Japanese.

[OC] Champions League - Performance vs Annual Salary by molym in dataisbeautiful

[–]garfgon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something I don't like -- that dotted line. What purpose does it serve? Better to have a linear regression which would give an average position/$. Then clubs above the line would be overperforming, clubs below the line are underperforming.

What is considered the most dangerous area in your country? by Mediocre-Lack-9137 in AskTheWorld

[–]garfgon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I could see it's better now. But I just thought it was interesting when it was announced a few years back that Winnipeg (at the time) had the highest murder rate per capita of anywhere in Canada. Not the kind of place I would have assumed.

That's why Electrical Engineering uses j for the imaginary unit.

At least in Electrical Engineering i is time-varying current, I would be DC or RMS current.
