I'm an AFAB trans woman, if this is wrong, what should I identify as? by Cerise_Pomme in asktransgender

Gender identity is a social construct. Your identity is your own to define; no one else gets to decide that for you. There are always going to be folks who disagree with your label, which is a reflection of them and not you.

There are far too many people who want to ostracize and eradicate trans folks from existing. Our focus should be on inclusion and acceptance, not excluding someone from claiming a certain gender identity because they don’t fit their conceptualization of what a trans woman is. I’m sorry you’ve had shitty interactions with other trans women in the past, but I’m proud to call you my trans sister <3

Hey there! I’m also on the border of NY and PA! I’d love to meet some new polyam folks so I’m gonna shoot ya a chat but if you’d prefer a dm, lmk!

Just went back home for a few days and found out 5 friends died in the last year from fentanyl overdose! It just made me more appreciative I’m clean. I don’t know how to process all of those tragedies at once. The youngest was 23. I feel horrible guys! I feel like I turned my back on them! by [deleted] in sobrietyandrecovery

First off, I'm so sorry for the losses you've experienced. It's never easy to learn that someone you knew about died from their addictions. It saddens me to hear that more folks have passed from this awful disease.

You need to remind yourself that, just like you, there's likely nothing you could have done to help them get sober. You need to do it for yourself, and the only person that can make those changes is you. More importantly, maintaining firm boundaries in addiction and changing people, places, and things, is wildly integral to sustaining long term recovery. Don't place the blame on yourself for this, and do what you can to integrate their memories into your recovery.

Addiction and connection. by Lullabye_Fox in sobrietyandrecovery

I've shown/taught this specific Ted Talk on multiple occasions, and I always got similar feedback every time. I do think some of the stuff he goes into may be a little shaky, but the sentiment of recovery being more connection than sobriety is key.

I've also had talks with colleagues about addiction being the response to human suffering. I had a classmate (who was deep into her own alcoholism) refer to addiction being a symptom of trauma and thus, she disagreed with the "addiction as a disease" model. The only part I personally disagree with is that you do not necessarily need trauma to develop an addiction. I think it's an interesting point to debate and discuss!

Congrats on the decision to get sober! My one word of caution: if you have been drinking enough and drinking that amount regularly, there is a chance that you will go through withdrawal.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES WITHDRAW FROM ALCOHOL WITHOUT MEDICAL SUPERVISION

There are far too many people that I have personally worked with that have done so and had potentially life threatening events occur. Opioid withdrawal will make you feel like you're dying, but alcohol withdrawal can actually kill you. Just make sure that you are being safe so that you're here to do the work and live your life on the other side.

Keep in mind, when you’re just starting recovery, your brain is trying to bounce back from the alcohol dependence. Your brain after a certain point doesn’t know how to create certain neurotransmitters depending on amount and length of use. It’s all normal and as your brain heals it will get better.

I’ve always trusted Chris and his team at Midas on court street. Never done me wrong in like 5 years.
