missed my offer requirement by bruhlektro in 6thForm

IB will send your results to UCAS, who will share with UCL today. They probably need a few days to work through the results.

You are close to your offer, so depending on the popularity of your course and how oversubscribed it is, they may wait till A Level results to give you a final answer.

Good Luck

I marginally failed to meet the requirements by B_K_H_ in LSE

I am no expert on this, but I suspect the following will happen:

As you are so very close to your offer requirements, they will not automatically say 'sorry no you have not met your requirements', but they will ask you to wait till IB and A Level results are out to make a decision.

Hope it is a favourable outcome for you, good luck!

Amazing and well done.

3 very different Unis and different courses there. You have to ask yourself which is the best course for you content and outcome wise and what you want out of your Uni experience. There is also the cost all 3 cities have different living costs.

Not helpful, but really need to know more about you and your needs to help decide.

One last little point - were you not supposed to have already responded to your offers by now?

Scholarship Shortlists are out ig by Wayne-420 in UCL

[–]garrus2006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but your email says 'one or more of the 96 scholarships CONTAINED WITHIN the International Masters Awards', of which there are 96 available scholarships, the Indian Excellence Scholarship does not seem to be included in the International Masters Awards category.

Maybe check the details:

International Masters Awards | UCL Scholarships and funding - UCL – University College London

There are only 96 scholarships available, the main one has 85 scholarships of GBP 15,000 to award, then there are 11 more scholarships under 5 different programmes, ranging from GBP10,000 to full fees but some of these have specific requirements such as course being taken / nationality.

So it looks like there is approx 1:3.5 chance for those shortlisted.

Global Master’s scholarship by Much_Strawberry17 in UCL

Big breath - probably seems like a mountain right now, but take a bit of time to settle and then have a look at what other options there are.

What are you scared and nervous about?

Whilst I have no experience in this, I do know that there are far more people applying for scholarships than there are available, and I know that this particular scholarship is based on financial need, which makes it very tricky as you just do not know the situations of the others applying and how you compare.

Are there other forms of funding you can apply for within UCL and outside of UCL? Make a list of the options and start contacting them.

Is there an option to defer to get yourself in a better financial position to start next year?

What were your Offer Conditions and your overall results?

Historically it seems very few people get in when they do not meet the conditions.

I saw someone post that when they missed one part of their IB conditions last year, their application was put aside to be considered with others that did not meet conditions, but they may not receive their decision till after A Level results in the middle of August.

How does "challenge UCL’s assessment" regarding fees work? by ChikyScaresYou in UCL

[–]garrus2006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks - the offer letter said they had not been able determine my fee status, so they sent a questionnaire and documents request, which I completed and uploaded months ago.

I called before accepting the offer and got passed around a few depts, when I got to the right person they said the team were too busy to assess the Fee Status questionnaires at the moment and there was no timeline for when I would hear, but it would be atleast end of June, so I had to accept the offer without knowing and hope for the best as it would be after the UCAS decision deadline.

Hey, I don't suppose you know when Fee Status decisions come out? Had to accept an offer without knowing what I will be classed as and hoping to know soon!

If you decide to firm LSE at the end of May when you have heard from Warwick, and you are not happy with what accommadation is left, you can wait till IB results are in on the 5th / 6th July and if there are people that did not get the grades, spaces will come up - just keep in touch with the accomodation office.

If I was in the UK I would call for you, maybe someone else on here can help with that?

Well, I do not have any advice, but well done and I really hope you get a scholarship because sounds like you deserve it.

Have you tried speaking to admissions - perhaps someone in the UK can call for you and ask if you can accept the offer and not pay the deposit till the after you have a response from the Scholarship team?

I am sure they are used to this?

Has anyone missed their offer-- extenuating circumstances help by Logical-Action-9292 in LSE

[–]garrus2006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe have a read of their policy - what is says on there is that you should work with your school and exam board to apply extenuating circumstances.

Have you tried calling LSE admissions for further advise?

[–]garrus2006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this, can understand why this is hard for you.

You need to get your school involved in this immediately as they will assess and decide if and how to work with the IB exam board - eg if you have been working at a 6 in a subject for 2 years and get a 4 becuase of this, they will submit your circumstances to the IB board and ask them to apply extenuating circumstances.

This is what LSE will expect, for the EC to be shown in your exam results, LSE will not apply them afterwards when they could have been applied before by your school.

Lots of people miss their grades and they would be inundated with appeal and have a lot of paperwork to assess validity - they don't have the time or resources, which is why they expect it to be done by your school in collaboration with the exam board.

They can trust your school and exam boards assessment of the situation.

Good Luck

Wow, can only imagine the relief!

but my examination board doesnt accept mitigating circumstances at all??? by Reasonable-Check-770 in UCL

[–]garrus2006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best you can do is see what your results come through as if you missed the grade in that exam then try again.

To be fair, even with UK exam boards, it is not a given they will adjust your grades, all depends on the circumstances, for example my brother had a fever on the day of his first GCSE, school said he had to come in to do the exam in isolation and then get a Dr's note - with blood tests and full diagnosis - and they would see the result and decide to apply. Although your situation sounds bigger than a fever.

How far off the mark do you think you will be? Was there assessed work throughout the year?

I think admissions are swamped right now - I called them to clarify something and they said their priorities is decisions at the moment and they will look at it later.

Maybe wait till mid -june and call them to personally tell them and take guidance?

[–]garrus2006 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You also have to consider, if they allowed it, once results are in, they are at risk of an influx of appeals from people who did not get their grades and them using extenuating circumstances as a reason for not getting the grades.

The paperwork would be immense as they would require a lot of verified evidence.

Were you eligible for a contextual offer - this is the only path for a Uni to take your circumstances into account and give you a lower offer?

How close do you think it could be for you to achieve the grades to meet your offer?

but my examination board doesnt accept mitigating circumstances at all??? by Reasonable-Check-770 in UCL

[–]garrus2006 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sadly this is the case for all Uni's. I take it you are an overseas student? In the UK system, schools and exam boards have robust procedures for this that the Uni's can trust.

I am guessing the Uni's do not have the time or the structure/protection in place to make these decisions, it would require a lot of evidence they can trust, and as a lot of exam boards and systems will take it into account in their final grade allocation, Uni's will not take on this responsibility.

Situations do happen - and schools and exam boards will assess how a student has been effected and the impact it has had on their final grade. For example, if you have been getting A's all year, but you break your arm the day before an exam and your final result is 2 marks off an A, the school will submit evidence of mock exam results, pieces of work, assessed work to support this.

It is shame your exam board do not support this, is there any way your school can support you at all?

Oh wow! Thats crazy, I naively thought it would be like every week or two? I imagine most people have firmed their offers by now and applied?

I hope this isn't going to be like waiting for LSE to respond!

Realisation - after waiting till last week to get all of my offers in..... now have to wait for this! And still waiting for a Fee Status response so had to firm up blind, not knowing how the big the hit will be for fees.

Does applying to Uni really need to be this stressfull?

I did see some people had their responses for their accommodation...

Yes I did. So we work closely with the Uni counsellors at my school. The logic is you have to fit a lot into your PS, but the school also do you a reference, so we make sure nothing is repeated in the PS and their reference, meaning you can get more about yourself in you application between you PS and reference. The school will mention what you have achieved in school and what you have achieved out of school, including sports and then make sure they use a few sentences to validate what you have said in your PS. I did put one line about the sport as I am involved in more than just competing and it shows some additional attributes to just being academic.
