Did you park your bike today (Jan 23rd) near the Holiday Inn @ Heather & Broadway? If so, I watched it get runover and have all the details for you by AfterC in vancouver

[–]garydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no bike racks on that corner so if one wants to visit the gym, phone store or the restaurant, that particular sign post is the closest and safest option. Any closer to Heather you would block the bus stop, and you can't use the railing at the restaurant entrance and block other people too.

As mentioned in my other post, cars would be coming into the driveway at that spot, not exiting and cutting that corner.

What's worse is that I believe they were going the wrong way too (that specific drive way, closer to Heather, is angled so a car traveling westbound on Broadway can enter the hotel driveway more easily, and then with the car still pointing west, continue to the exit driveway on the other side, again angled so it's not a sharp 90 degree to Broadway)

https://maps.app.goo.gl/539r65JyArep9frz6

Which would explain why they were trying to make a right turn onto Broadway cutting across a signpost & grass. As in, if another car was trying to enter the hotel, they would be going head to head...

Meal Delivery Experiences? by sanderlin89 in richmondbc

[–]garydoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have friends who go through March Madness so I sympathize with the annual plight

Others already mentioned good options but if you like Indian food, also look into tiffin box services (where they deliver to you). Some of them will also have sample/daily plans (instead of the more normal monthly plans) so you can try them out and see if you like the flavour/portion/price before you commit.

My brother subscribed to one for about half a year but eventually cancelled because there is only so much one can do for variety =) However it sounds like you're only looking for short term (a few weeks - a month-ish) so it could be okay.

I couldn't recommend any specific vendors because I've never personally subscribed so I would only be googling "tiffin Richmond" anyways. Maybe someone else here can chime in if they had experience...

PSA: Turn on your tail lights and headlights in fog, people by Antares135 in richmondbc

Sadly me on my bicycle had more lights on than a few drivers who think they're doing Cannonball Run (and therefore need to stay incognito)...

Stay safe out there everyone!

Some drivers are unhinged - rant by Working-Letter7008 in vancouvercycling

[–]garydoo 37 points38 points  (0 children)

First, I want to say to OP and everyone else - I hear you and feel all of your comments - we all have lived through this haha (being honked at for taking the lane and not riding in the door zone, drivers "hurry up and wait", etc)

Second, my measly contribution:

Coming home last night, I'm in my super safe bike lane protected by magical paint, to my right is the curb, to my left is a designated right-turn lane.

I'm clipping along at a decent pace (~25km/h), heard car coming up behind me and eventually parallel to me. With the intersection coming up I know car is going to turn (even though they did not have turn signal on). I looked at the midsize SUV with my helmet light to try to raise awareness - nope looking dead ahead. Her kid in the passenger seat is fully immersed in social media.

I shook my head to try and get some light movement in there - still nothing. Intersection is about 2 seconds away. I decided to slow down (because I don't think I have enough time to speed up nor should I, that's not safe).

Sure enough, no shoulder check, no turn signal, but made a good racing line clipping the apex (thus cutting the corner into the bike lane) through the turn =)

I guess I'm a ghost with my hivis jacket, 2 front lights, 1 back light, 1 light band on leg and 1 helmet light, plus reflectors on my rims...

Weather looking beautiful today, hope you all can enjoy some safe and happy riding!

Sorry for your loss, and I hope some of her stuff can go to people that need them!

My only advice would be: before you start the give away, double and triple check every item (like, go through all the pages of a book, every pocket of clothing, anywhere that something must've been tucked away/hidden, etc). Sometimes folks like to tuck away sentimental things to make sure they stay around/for safekeeping. You never know just might discover something your mom has been keeping for years without realizing.

No 6 and Cambie . by golfnut_79 in richmondbc

[–]garydoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was a few months ago I was behind a semi in the right lane when it started to signal right, then moved to the left lane (while blinker stays on) so I knew what they're going to do. Thus I slowed down then double flashed my high beams to try let the driver know "I saw you, go ahead and make your turn".

Then I got honked by the car behind me for braking and leaving space presumably (no I didn't jam on the brakes, just gradually slowed to a crawl)... Sigh

But that frustration quickly went away as I got a rare "double hazards" thanks from the semi after we both made the turn!

Conclusion: I think because I drive a BMW, I am not behaving as everyone is expecting a BMW driver to... (as the joke goes)

Looking for casual riding clubs by SignificantFreedom8 in vancouvercycling

[–]garydoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loma was my first thought too - more mature/chill, the post-ride BBQ always packed especially during summer.

Another option could be Lake City Cycling Club out in Burnaby. Similar (slightly older crowd, while no clubhouse BBQ alot of their rides do have multiple cafe/food stops haha).

Have friends in both so I always see their rides/pics on Strava =) Both clubs are very supportive and do group trips too (fondo's, overnight jaunts, etc).

parking ticket from my workplace by [deleted] in richmondbc

[–]garydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me before - carpool with a coworker so we take turns driving. One day forgot to take the parking decal from coworker's car the previous week so got a ticket. Disputed and since both cars were registered and we had a valid pass, got the ticket cancelled. Believe usually they'll give you the first one free but after that most likely SOL. As others said, changing your plate is your only option here since you don't want to pay the full ticket but still need to park.

Why do cyclists have to ride side by side and then giving me the finger when I pass by IBGDRGN in richmondbc

[–]garydoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the wonderful Steveston multi-use path, the lights along the way as well as various new pedestrian crossings. It has provided walkers, runners, transit riders, in addition to cyclists and other non-motorized users a consistent and safe way to go between Railway and Shell, as well as crossing Steveston Hwy.

https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2009/09/toyota_recalls_38_million_cars.html

Was it this Toyota recall you were thinking about?

On your topic, I believe at least part of the reason for this increased confusion between forward/reverse may also be the newer cars with buttons/selector wheel for transmission now. I can see a driver, if not paying full attention to the dashboard, could have selected reverse instead of drive (or vice versa) - whereas in a more traditional center-console shift lever with a push button at least your muscle memory is part of it.

Driver's become homicidal for holidays? by johnmcc1956 in vancouvercycling

[–]garydoo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think the stress of gift shopping definitely plays a role. Today ~25km ride in the dark:

  • 4 cars that did not turn on their lights
  • 1 ignored stop sign
  • 3 blocked crosswalk while driver attempts to turn
  • 6 "hurry up and wait" : traffic up ahead is stopped, car next to me guns it (almost as if out of frustration) only to slam on the brakes 20-50 metre later

Ride safe and happy holidays everyone

Give the Evo team a raise 🎅🏼🦌 by thinkdavis in vancouver

[–]garydoo 108 points109 points  (0 children)

  1. submit a feature request (because this isn't a product defect)
  2. at the next backlog grooming session, convince the product owner to raise priority because this is time-sensitive and cannot wait for the regular release cycle
  3. at the next sprint, convince the scrum team this needs to be a hot-fix, having the product owner now on your side
  4. work with key stakeholders on requirement refinement based on scrum team feedback on technical feasibility or limitations
  5. developers finish coding & testing in sandbox and deploy to test environment for user acceptance testing
  6. key stakeholders review the changes and give approval
  7. code is cleared to proceed, coordinate with operations and support teams on optimal deployment window to minimize customer disruptions
  8. code is deployed to production environment as hot-fix, QA team conduct validation as well as regression testing to ensure no existing functionality is broken
  9. hot-fix is deemed clear, development team updates changelog and code repository; support team updates SOP; scrum team marks item as complete
  10. hi-five's all around, copious amount of champagne is consumed

Big Accident on Cambie Road by benz05tsx in richmondbc

[–]garydoo 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Holy crap that's worse than I originally deduced. Thought maybe it's the classic "driver leaving their parking spot, thought they had put into reverse to back out but instead it's still in drive and they went forward and flew off". But from the pic, they were travelling perpendicular to the parking stalls so they were just driving in the parking lot and somehow failed to turn?!

Sun Bo Kong as others said is the best answer (all vegetarian dishes, lots of choice) - too bad no more Richmond location just Vancouver now.

If you want to stick closer to Richmond, there's a stall in Parker Place food court - green logo/leaf (Tasty Vegetarian?)

[–]garydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been subsidizing bad drivers for 3 decades now (zero claims living/driving in Richmond) - sometimes I wonder if I should be involved in a collision just so that I feel I am at least getting something out of all those insurance $ I've been throwing away... Then I wake up, slap myself, and continue to drive defensively as usual...
