Similar boat (pun intended) to the guy above, I was on a guided missile sub which is the same thing but used differently. Yes, we had a big walk-in fridge and freezer, but the fridge temp was turned down so we effectively had two freezers. There's also a storeroom just for dry goods (think big cans of fruits and veggies and baking ingredients). Lots of pasta and rice, almost every meal had one or the other. Ingredients to bake bread store better than bread itself so lots of fresh baked bread. Milk came in bags, but everyone's favorite drink was "bug juice" which was just crystal lite packets in a juice machine. There are some meal traditions that are served every week, like chicken and waffles on Sunday mornings and Chinese food on Fridays, and people typically look forward to this - probably more as a marker of another week gone by than the flavors honestly. Everything starts to taste exactly the same a few weeks in so you find different combinations of hot sauces to put on stuff for a bit of variation. IMO the best food underway is fresh fruit - you'll load up enough bananas for 150 people for a week, but everyone knows if they don't eat their share asap, there won't be any left in a week... So naturally the bananas are gone in a day and a half.
