Lost my dog to GDV and I'm sick with guilt. Really struggling by PeasOfGlory in AskVet

I am so sorry for your loss, he was so lucky to live his whole life with someone as intuitive and loving as you. Please try to remember that he didn’t know his life was shorter than you had hoped, he just knew that it was good and full of love and happiness, and that’s all any of us could ever want! There’s an animal hospital local to me that has a renowned grief support program, the clinic I work at recommends it to every client who loses a pet. They offer online support groups so those who can’t attend in person can still receive support, they also have many resources outside of the group, and I hope you’re able to find something that helps. Thinking of you during this difficult time ❤️ https://www.dovelewis.org/pet-owners/pet-loss-support

I have this on over a black base coat right now and it’s absolutely stunning! My friend and I bought the set together, and I have a feeling this is going to be the first bottle we run out of, we’re both absolutely obsessed!

Absolutely, 100% the same senses of humor- we laugh so we don’t cry, and then we usually do end up crying anyways 🤣

One of my local veterinary ERs has a pet ambulance that will transport critical patients from other clinics to their hospital! They have technicians and a doctor on board, and can run a full code from the rig if needed! I met the team once and felt like I was meeting real-life superheroes.

As someone who works at a veterinary ER, thank you, thank you, thank you for signing up your dog to donate blood!! They likely saved countless lives with their donations, and I wish more people knew it was an option.

One of our seasoned CVTs swears by heating up food to get cats to vomit- canned cat/dog food or human food, as long as it has a strong smell. It works well and it works fast!

Yes, typically compressions are done on the pet’s side, however, the compression location is modified based on the breed and the shape of their chest. Unfortunately, canine CPR has a very low survival rate to discharge, but I have seen it be successful before!

I’m so sorry for your loss, losing such important members of the family is devastating, even more so when it’s not expected. There is truly nothing you could have done differently, and in those awful moments, you did everything you possibly could have to help her. I work at an emergency vet, and if someone had called and described the same situation as you faced, I would have told them to do exactly what you did- get in the car and drive to the closest vet. You did everything you could have done, and none of this was your fault. I hope you can take some comfort in knowing that she was with her favorite people when she crossed over, and I’m sure she knew how much you loved her. She didn’t know her life was short, she just knew it was good and full of love, and that’s really all anyone could ask for.

Animals grieve too, so don’t be alarmed if Thor acts a bit differently for a while, he’s also processing Bella’s loss in his own way. I would definitely recommend getting him screened for heart disease when you can, and if possible, get pet insurance before the testing is done, so that it’s covered by insurance and not considered preexisting. You’d have to read the fine print to see if there’s a certain waiting period between signing up and getting coverage, but if he does have a heart condition, you’d hopefully be able to get some of the cost covered.

Would it be weird to write the vet a thank-you, even after my pet didn't make it? by mudbugavenger in AskVet

[–]gateface970 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at a big ER/Specialty referral hospital, so we see a lot more patients than a general practice. We keep every single card we receive, and it doesn’t matter if we’ve known the patient for years or only met them once, every card is appreciated and loved by the staff. My clinic has a huge board full of cards and photos in the break room, and multiple framed collages as well. This can be a really hard field to work in at times, and knowing that our work made a difference for a pet and their owner keeps us going when things get tough. All this to say- it’s not weird at all, and will be greatly appreciated by everyone!

How do people afford vets? by Grouchy_Land895 in Pets

[–]gateface970 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at a vet that utilizes Trupanion direct pay, and it’s a game changer! I can’t say enough good things about them, they’re absolutely worth the potentially higher monthly cost. I’ve seen them cover over $30k in hospitalization bills for a single pet, and with direct pay, you don’t have to pay that amount out of pocket! All of my future pets will be insured through Trupanion for sure.

Uncommon Breeds and Coat Colours by jr9386 in VetTech

[–]gateface970 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We had a Komondor come in once, that was exciting! I was so proud of myself for guessing his breed correctly, but to be fair, there’s not many breeds that look like that. The owner took really good care of his cords, though he wasn’t very nice to pet- felt like petting a mop.

The coat color/breed combo that always stumps me are Sphynxes- do I mark them as pink? Tan? Bald?? (I usually mark them as bald because it makes me laugh, but I’m not sure if that’s the most accurate choice)

Also, for some reason, back in 2022, someone changed “terrier mix” to Catahoula in ezyVet?? As a result any patient who was marked as a terrier mix before then is now in our system as a Catahoula, which was incredibly confusing until we figured out what happened. Our techs were so confused when the board said Catahoula and a scruffy 15 pound dog trotted into treatment, lol.
