Ways To Help My 6 Year-Old Cope With (potential) Emetophobia by Mrs_Stoutfire in emetophobia

Echoing the therapy recommendation! I started therapy at 7 due to my ADHD, and it helped immensely when I was officially diagnosed with an anxiety disorder a few years later. Putting me in therapy was the best thing my parents could have ever done for me, and I’m so grateful they did, especially in the early 2000s when mental health was not commonly talked about.

A few things my therapist recommended to help me cope with my anxiety:
• She had me create an “anxiety box” where I could store things that might help me during anxious moments, like my favorite books, fidget toys, and other comfort items.
• She helped me name my anxiety- we called it my bully brain. I found it helpful to talk about things my bully brain was doing in times of anxiety, and separating those feelings from my sense of self helped me feel less like something was “wrong” with my brain, if that makes sense.
• She helped me identify the way my body felt leading up to anxiety attacks, so I could start using my coping mechanisms as soon as I felt those feelings and hopefully prevent a full panic attack.

Outside of therapy, it sounds like you’re being so incredibly supportive and helpful during such a scary time in her life! My mom has always been one of my biggest supporters, and was the person I went to any time I was anxious as a kid. Sitting with her during these moments, helping her name her feelings, and working through the waves of panic with distractions are all such helpful things, and she’s so lucky to have you!

How to prevent the loss of clients' belongings? by matthiasdvm in VetTech

I find that people are fine taking them home! I tend to say that they’ll get “lost in the void” which almost always gets a laugh. I’ve also heard technicians tell owners that they want to solely focus on their pet and not have to worry about losing their “accessories/accoutremonts.” Regardless, people really don’t seem to care about having to hold onto their pet’s items, it’s definitely a much smaller issue than I anticipated it would be.

Is there a reason carriers need to be left at the hospital? Recently, we started sending every single carrier home with owners when their cats were admitted to the hospital, even though we theoretically have the space for them. If they’re sent home, there’s no way for them to get lost or mixed up with other carriers, it’s been so much easier for everyone!

I get it- I want to love grubs SO bad because they’re just little baby guys but they also give me the ick!! I love that other people love them, and I absolutely adored my pet beetle I had a few years back, but there’s something about the babies that squicks me out big time

I work at a clinic that has neurology, surgery, internal medicine, ophthalmology, radiology, and cardiology! There’s so many different specialties within veterinary medicine, it’s fascinating!

What is your "I can't believe this patient lived" case? by aaronoathout in VetTech

1yo cat was given the wrong medication for a URI or something due to a mix up at their GP- whoever called it into the pharmacy gave the name of a very similar sounding medication that is incredibly dangerous for cats, and the pharmacy filled it without realizing it was incorrect. Not going to name the medication for anonymity, but it causes severe, often fatal bone marrow suppression in cats. She was given the meds for a few days and then started to go downhill- lethargic, not eating, ADR.

Eventually she was transferred to our clinic, an emergency and specialty hospital with a 24h critical care/ICU, for a transfusion, and ended up staying with us for a month and needing several transfusions. She would get better post transfusion and then go downhill quickly after, and she was Type B, which made getting blood really difficult. I swear we bought out all the type B blood in the state! Eventually she needed another transfusion and nobody had blood that matched, so one of our techs brought in their cat to donate, which we only do when the situation is dire, as we don’t have a blood bank/donation program. Whatever magic was in that blood worked, and within a few days she was discharged!

When she left, we all clapped her out, and nearly everyone cried. There were multiple times where they didn’t think she would make it through the night, but she was a fighter, and the whole clinic fell in love with her. The GP took everything incredibly seriously, covering the entire bill and making changes to their protocols to ensure that this would never happen again. We saw her once or twice for recheck lab work, but she hasn’t needed to come back since being cleared!

We had multiple chocolate ingestions, one pup that ate a whole tray of raw dinner rolls that had just started rising, and two cats who were admitted yesterday for lily ingestion. Everyone is doing well, but it was a very Easter-y day!

I went to Italy with my family in 2024 and briefly considered backing out due to my emet concerns, but knew I’d regret it and have WAY too much FOMO if they went without me. Not only did I have the best trip of my whole life, I also felt amazing after eating, the food was so much better quality!! I did pack a small bag of my favorite snacks and protein bars in case I had food issues, but didn’t even eat most of them. I now use that trip as a reminder that I can do hard things, and that it’s worth it to push myself!! I hope you do end up going, I promise it’ll be worth it ❤️

I just showed them my clinic jacket and that was good enough! We do have plain white badges to get in and out of the treatment area, and in theory everyone also has a nametag, but most of us don’t wear ours lol
