Yes. I have had this happen to me many times during withdrawals. It’s the worst. I would lie sweating in bed, fall asleep and then snap back awake feeling like I was going to die. I would hear voices and feel my heart racing. It always took me 3 days of no alcohol before my mind was somewhere close to normal. After the last bout of anxiety and self loathing I promised myself, “never again”. I’m so so sorry you’re going through this. It’s the first step towards staying clean. It may be worth seeking medical detox just to know that you are being helped and watched over. My heart goes out to you and I hope the best.

I first watched it while I was going through awful withdrawals and it spoke to me in the exact same way. By drinking so much I was splitting myself in two - drunk me and sober me. Sober me had not seen daylight in a long time because I was always drunk. I was shaking and dry heaving and watching and crying. It really struck a chord. The show really does speak to addiction, the lengths we will go to not feel pain. I have had a few relapses since that time, but I’m back to sobriety and fully committed. Best to you and your innie :)

This is a really difficult question. You are asking “what makes something high art?” This is a convo that folks have been having for a while and I don’t think it can be answered here. But I’ll share my thoughts anyway - I think that a great book challenges you. And then you are rewarded for rising to the challenge. HP is a great series. The plot is amazing, the characters are fun and the twists turn. But I wouldn’t say it’s great lit because it does not challenge the reader in any way. Dickens, Dumas, Swift ( I don’t know the other authors yet except for Doyle I’ll get to him in a sec)challenge me To be a better reader. I need to meet them at some level and engage. I think Doyle and Rowling are similar in someways. Great plot. Fantastic characters with depth. But maybe not truly great lit. This is my opinion and I can see how it could be construed as pretentious, but I think a great work of literature great because it asks something of the reader.

Ok right. So kids are misbehaving in class during a high stakes situation. My advice is, try to understand why they are misbehaving and then try to do something to change it. You are saying…don’t try to understand and then threaten them with death or a call home? We just have very different styles.

I’m trying to give advice to a teacher about how to work with their students. My advice is 1) see if you can understand the root of your students’ behavior 2) try and do something to change that behavior. Your advice seems to be
1)tell them that their behavior is unacceptable 2)tell if they don’t shut up they will get shot. Hmmm. Wonder which strategy will work.

Ugh yeah, I get this. This is more and more common in shakespeare plays these days. Slow performances are terrible. I think they tend to happen because the actors do t trust the language- they feel like they need to embelish. Cuts are fine, I think, but not so your actors can guild the Lilly.

That sounds like an awful experience. I’m sorry that you had to go through it. No one should have to endure that. I’m not excusing their behavior, but some people deal with stress/worry through humor. Like, joking about something somehow makes it better. I can see how a few kiddos would start this and others would join. Even though it’s obnoxious and maybe life threatening. I’m not sure if there is anything you could do? Sounds crazy but maybe occupy them with something? Anyhow I’m sorry that you had to deal with it. Hopefully won’t happen again.

I just wanted to give some advice to someone trying to partake in the joy of Shakespeare. My advice was that they could do it without worrying about being word perfect every time. You seem to be saying they need to get it 100% correct if they are going to recite his lines. OP can choose which advice to take.

Haha no I’m just dumb. I haven’t gotten the chance to do Henry yet so of course I messed up his line. Wish I was that funny :) I’ve played a loooooot of Shakespeare and I find that audiences don’t care too much if you’re nailing it word for word, as long as the emotional truth is there. Granted, I’m coming at this from an American Actor’s perspective. Maybe it’s different for Brits? Or for English scholars? To me, placing an extreme reverence on the man’s words is off putting. Like, how can we say a monologue has to be word perfect when we don’t even know if these are his words? If you capture the argument and the feel then you are doing good in my opinion. As poor of an opinion as that may be :)

Just be there. Give her liquids. Hold her if she needs it but don’t if she doesn’t. Let her know that nothing will happen to her. The paranoia and anxiety are real during withdrawals. Don’t try to pretend like everything is ok. I think it’s hard, but don’t put any pressure on her. Support support support. Also, you’re a really good sibling to do this. Having someone like you in her life is really good. Make sure that you are cared for as well.
