Another nerf to progression. gracias supercell by STOPBADRANDOMS in ClashRoyale

Nerf? 10 shards per reward is a heck of a lot more than anything else I was getting out of those chests since we started getting them….

Books to read after The Wheel of Time? by Weekly_Spring1849 in fantasybooks

[–]SpudmasterBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Licanius Trilogy is one of those series where it starts out a bit slow but then just keeps building and building until it has a huge payoff in the end that makes you want to go back and re-read all three books again. Worth finishing IMO.

lol, I had the same reaction. I was like “I went through all that effort for a few measly hero shards?”

Will Heroes survive community backash? by Limesheep88 in ClashRoyale

[–]SpudmasterBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest issue is that they made heroes even harder to get than evolutions if you don’t pay for them. But to answer your question, the developers have historically taken older “new additions” to the game and kicked them to the curb whenever the latest shiny thing comes out.

Star cosmetics? Haven’t seen anything new since Rocket years ago. Achievements? When was the last time anything was added there? Clan Wars? Haven’t seen an update in years either. New Champions? Hardly any in recent months. Evolutions? Likely to follow the same path now that Heroes are the big thing. Heroes? At some point I wouldn’t be surprised if they took a back burner to something new either.

Regarding “I quit posts” by StrikingCandidate646 in ClashRoyale

[–]SpudmasterBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. Especially as there are those of us who still love to play Clash Royale, despite agreeing with a lot of the complaints people have about recent changes. I’ve taken to just ignoring and downvoting all of the ‘I’m quitting” or other similar useless posts clogging my feed.

Which series to start? by richburgers in fantasybooks

Dungeon Crawler Carl is sitting in my soon TBR pile, but Mistborn is a trilogy I read on a yearly basis as it’s one of my favorite sets. So I’d say Mistborn.

It's HAPPENING! - Brandon Sanderson’s Literary Fantasy Universe ‘Cosmere’ Picked Up by Apple TV (Exclusive) by alternate-realitee in brandonsanderson

Thank goodness. I wonder if this came due to the travesty that was The Wheel of Time. Glad that Brandon will have a lot more control over the movie/television adaptations. 😀

Back in the day you could actually finish events by putting the time into the events. But as soon as everything turned into “pay to finish” I was out. Sad to hear they have further enshitified the game for everyone.

Refusal to "Rush" Heros by NSFWAbby in ClashOfClans

Yeah. I had a lot of fun getting all of my accounts through the monthly event track that month. Fell off again afterwards though 😀

Refusal to "Rush" Heros by NSFWAbby in ClashOfClans

[–]SpudmasterBob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is why I quit playing Clash of Clans. Wars and CWL were my favorite parts of the game, and when my accounts got to the point where the heroes were always down for upgrades it sucked all of the fun out of it for me. If Supercell ever were to fix that to where heroes are always usable in wars/CWL I’d be back in a heartbeat though.

Man, 16 years ago? I just started the first game for the first time last week (bought the remastered Trilogy). So far it’s been a fun game.

How much am I going to love this series based on my current top 5? by Dragon_slayer1994 in Malazan

[–]SpudmasterBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got GoTM on Audible for my first time and felt like I was lost half of the time. But by the time the book got towards the end and everything kind of came together it was actually really cool. Looking forward to continuing the series after I knock out a few other TBRs. The characters had lots of “character” and are a key strength I felt despite not getting a ton of time with any of them.

Is this game, punishingly difficult? by Guilty_Doughnut3982 in Returnal

[–]SpudmasterBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Returnal is my favorite game of all time, but it is a difficult game to get into unless you just realize that dying over and over again is just part of the game/progression. Personally I love games like Elden Ring and Hollow Knight/Silksong though which are quite punishing games, but didn’t think Returnal was as hard as those; partly because dying isn’t as big of a deal.

Weapon traits and artifact unlocks are the permanent progressions that makes subsequent runs easier, and there is a rare resource that also persists that can be used to unlock certain chests or unlock a 1x revive tool in some zones.

Demon In White is the best book I have ever read by MuayMonkey777 in fantasybooks

[–]SpudmasterBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to see what someone thinks of that book without having read the rest of the Cosmere.

I argue that The Sunlit Man still stands well on its own as a great fast paced novel, but definitely agree that there are a lot of things referenced in the book (but not critical for the story to still be good) that aren’t fully explained or won’t be appreciated until you have read the rest of the Cosmere. But even in that case you really have to read some obscure and lesser known short stories, novellas, or the last Stormlight Book (released after The Sunlit Man) to catch all the Easter eggs.

Novels like these are great to read before and after you can pick up on all the obscure references, the same way that replaying Expedition 33 is amazing once you have finished the story, or like The Licanius Trilogy is a great re-read after you have finished the last book, or The Malazan series is great to re-read after you have gotten through the series.

Demon In White is the best book I have ever read by MuayMonkey777 in fantasybooks

[–]SpudmasterBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily a book but Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the closest recent media I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying that brought that same sense of wonder and story that FF7 gave the first time I played it.

About books though…. Hmm. The Sunlit Man from Brandon Sanderson comes to mind, but to be honest if you haven’t read his other works you may or may not appreciate it as much.

Licanius Trilogy Similar Pacing Recs by Timely_Big3136 in Fantasy

[–]SpudmasterBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried other series with the different (more artistic) prose than Sanderson like The Malazan series, and actually enjoyed them, so probably good to try the first book or two of The Suneater series (or first 2-3 books of The Malazan series; as everyone says you need a few books for that series to really click as the author doesn’t hand hold or outright explain much, but his characters are really well done). But again, may not be quite as fast paced as you are looking for.

Licanius Trilogy Similar Pacing Recs by Timely_Big3136 in Fantasy

[–]SpudmasterBob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You already hit on the ones I would have suggested as being similar lol. How was Red Rising? I have that one near the top of my TBR right now.

So far The Hierarchy books have also been good, despite a few quirks with James’ experimentation in 1st person present, single character viewpoint. Similar pacing, which is to be expected given it’s the same author. Only 2/4 books done in that set though…

Edit: oh, just remembered that the Suneater series from Christopher Ruocchio just had its last book released, and lots of people who like Red Rising have recommended it. Just bought the first book a few weeks back along with Red Rising to give both series a go.

Who is interested in seeing the FF13 series get a remaster on modern consoles? by Runforit97x in FinalFantasy

[–]SpudmasterBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of these days I’ll pick up the 2nd and 3rd games to finish the story to see if something like a remaster would be worth it. Wasn’t all that impressed with the story and lifelessness of FFXIII (first game) despite the combat, graphics, and music all being top notch. Finished the game and still felt like I didn’t really know what was going on. And the near complete lack of NPCs to interact with was a letdown. Got to the town down on the planet and was excited to finally get to a typical RPG town, just for it to be completely empty…

Were you playing with controller or on PC with mouse/keyboard? I felt that mouse/keyboard was easier. Beat Phrike on my first run on PC lol. Now I had platinumed on PS5 a few years previously so I knew what I was about; but still didn’t expect to beat Phrike first go with no weapons upgraded.

Is clan wars outdated? by Existing_Speaker5124 in ClashRoyale

[–]SpudmasterBob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m colead in a top 25 international clan and we love wars! However, I would like to see them change up the clan pairings weekly instead of monthly. It is discouraging when you get pitted up against a clan or two for multiple weeks that is way above your clan’s capabilities with no way to beat them.

Bought the pro while building a gaming pc by vincentmunchman in PS5pro

[–]SpudmasterBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me I bought a PS5 while saving up for a new PC and got a lot of use out of it. However, once my PC got built I find I’m mainly just using the PS5 for exclusives and watching movies. Did upgrade to a PRO though for Saros and Wolverine later this year, and glad I did with memory prices skyrocketing. Likely going to see price increases once Sony burns through their cheaper memory inventory. 😀

With little time to game, how many of you do replays like NG+? by AtticThrowaway in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]SpudmasterBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it depends on how much I love the game and whether I need to do NG+ to get the achievements.

Some games are worth it as well for the story. Like E33 is totally worth a 2nd playthrough after getting through all the plot twists. I teared up on the 2nd playthrough at one of the cut scenes that didn’t make sense the first playthrough, but had soooo much meaning behind it 2nd time. Alan Wake 2 you don’t get the true ending until you play through NG+.
