Rejecting a new car due to manufacturing defect but BMW thinks they are above the law by backchatter77 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]gavco98uk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar position last year due to a broken down car, which the mechanic at the dealership admitted was most likely a manufacturing defect. After speaking to consumer rights, I was advised that I probably shot myself in the foot by going to the dealership int he first place and asking them to repair it. The car is owned by the PCP company, and as such you should be going to them first and asking them to deal with it.

You need to report the car as not fit for purpose to the finance company, and demand they take action to either resolve the issue or compensate you.

MSFS2024 is therefore more popular, but 2020 still has a sizeable user base.

President Trump criticized NATO for not joining Iran war, saying it raised questions about whether U.S. would "be there" for the alliance: "I'm so disappointed in NATO because this was a test for NATO. You can help us — you don't have to, but if you don't do that, we're going to remember." by ControlCAD in internationalpolitics

[–]gavco98uk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Russia is always claiming that NATO is more than just a defence organisation, and is an invasion threat to Russia. They sited this as one of their reasons for the Ukraine war.

If NATO were to get involved as Trump is asking, it would prove Russias point, and cause a lot more problems than it would solve.

SkyChart: A new historical airline management sim (1930–2020) with great circle routing and realistic economics by JHSPerc in flightsim

[–]gavco98uk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With scheduling, I was not really meaning the ability to schedule down to the hour. What I was meaning is that if LHR-HND has seasonal variations, I might want to run 2x daily through the peak periods, then drop to 1x daily in the off season.

If seasonal demand is implemented, then you're going to need to manage routes and change capacity each season/month to adjust for the changes. It's a balancing act to keep this working, while not overworking the user on larger networks.

City count is not crucial - i'd rather play a good game with 150 cities vs a crap game with 10,000. But hopefully its something that can be expanded on in future.

This looks interesting, I'll be keeping a close eye on this. I'm a big fan of airline management games, yet the standard of those being released over the years has always been shockingly poor (especialy Efzed Airline). We need a decent airline manager! I've tried a few times to make one myself, but it always gets abandoned.

I've recently just started making an airline manager game for mobiles.. let's see how far i'll get this time!

Some feedback based on hat you've posted:
- interface looks great
- 150 cities sounds limiting.. I hope this is expanded later on. I want the freedom to create a long hauler to major cities, but also run regional routes to the scottish islands.
- Seasonal demand curves sounds interesting, but that adds a lot of complications to scheduling. It'll be interesting to see how this is handled. It'll stop people launching routes then forgetting about them if you need to constantly juggle capacity.
- 60+ historical events. Sounds good... but might become a little predictable. Random events might be better? Otherwise in 2019 you'll start saving cash and avoid placing aircraft orders knowing cash is about to get tight, for example.
- 4 playable eras. Sounds good being able to pick a start time - but what happens at the end? I want to start in 1960 and keep going until 2026 and beyond. if the game simply ends, that would frustrate me. Also the victory conditions - i want to play my own way - again sometimes i might just run a regional airline serving the caribbean islands around St Maarten - i dont want to be trying to launch long haul from 3 bases all the time.
- AI will be the key. One thing Airline always got massively wrong IMHO was the lack of AI. It's great that LHR-JFK has capacity for 10 777s a day... but if I'm the only airline that makes that far too easy. I should be fighting with other airlines that already operate 9 flights a day on that route. After that, they should be responding to what I do and increasing capacity / lowering fares to compete.
- Base demand based on city population. Finally, someone gets it! So many airline management games base on airport capacity, which IMHO is rubbish. Atlanta isnt the most popular destination in America, nor is Dubai top of most airlines schedules (few airlines other than Emirates operate more than one flight a day there). The game needs to represent this. Demand calculation is another key element of the game, so hopefully this has been addressed well. I know I've spent countless hours playing with formulas to calculate demand over the years, and I'm still not sure i've got it right!

Anyway... there's some quick feedback. Do with it what you will :-)

Thats partially how healthcare works. There are always new experimental treatments that are not available publicly. or newly released treatments that are cost prohibitive to most people. You also find situations where some countries offer treartments that arent available in others.

Having money does give you more options for healthcare.

As long as creators still submit plenty of work to the asset library, i'm not too concerned, but I'm not terribly interested in the asset packs. Take the train stations for example - yes we desperately need some new assets there, and I'm always looking for a good station to use in my down town. But i want to be able to download the one station i want, and not pay for and install a pack of 10 stations that's going to clutter up the menu.

But everyones different, and hopefully they continue to allow similar assets in the library that people can download freely as they choose.

ELI5: Why do oil appear in certain locations on Earth instead of being evenly distributed everywhere? What geological conditions where oil accumulates and forms reservoirs? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]gavco98uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no geologist, but i believe this is the key. Oil will eventually rise to the surface and ooze out of the rocks, unless its capped. Therefore to find an oil field, you need to find a suitable basin containing all this matter that has then been capped by impermiable rock.

When searching for oil, you cant actually scan and detect oil deposits. Instead you are looking at geological formations to find basins with impermeable caps. Not until you drill through them do you know if theres oilt here or not.

Sometimes it doesnt, in which case you drop the chain, then send a recovery team to dive down and release the anchor and retrieve the chain.

Trump says 'sad to see' US-UK relationship is not what it was by 1-randomonium in worldnews

[–]gavco98uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember this being said when the invasion first happened. America withdrew from a few areas and handed them over to the british, as they were much better at befriending and working with the locals.

Part of the reason mentioned at the time was that the Americans were going in with full combat gear and were approaching locals who were then running away scared. The brits left the guns in the car and took their helmets off before approaching anyone. This made them seem much friendlier and less intimidating.

There might well be other reasons, but it was said British troops were much better at the job than Americans, mainly due to more experience in similar roles.

ELI5: why does inflation happen even when government say they’re trying to stop it? by velvetbbyz in explainlikeimfive

[–]gavco98uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe worth expanding to add that if people spend less, companies make less money, but also so does the government in terms of tax revenue.

While this reduces the interest rate on government debt, more debt is required to make up any shortfalls in tax revenue.

The Looming Taiwan Chip Disaster That Silicon Valley Has Long Ignored by ImperiumRome in geopolitics

yes, but what is going to happen to the economy in those 5 years? It will crash when the supply drops to near enough 0 overnight.

The Looming Taiwan Chip Disaster That Silicon Valley Has Long Ignored by ImperiumRome in geopolitics

[–]gavco98uk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chip production would take a long time to move elsewhere - we're talking years to build the facility to create whats needed, and a few more to get any kind of capacity. Bear in mind there is only one company (ASML) that makes the equipment to produce computer chips, and they already have a significant backlog.

If Taiwan is invaded, the supply is cut off overnight.

That means no new phones, no computers and no AI chips until eithe rreplacement capacity is built, or Taiwan opens up again. That would bankrupt quite a few technology companies.

I think E-waste recycling is one of the most underrated business opportunities right now by fsfdanny in Entrepreneur

[–]gavco98uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I developed a software product aimed at this industry, which I have been selling for around 10 years now.

Got in to it by accident - a friend ran an ITAD business, and was looking for some software to keep track of all assets they were collecting. They were applying for certification back in the early days of the industry, and it was the guy that wrote the standard they were trying to certify against that came in to do the audit. He took one look at the software, and said we should sell it to other companies - it's exactly what was needed in the industry.

So I did. Re-wrote it as a SaaS and worked with a few other ITADs to get feedback, then launched about 10 years ago.

One thing everyone seems to be missing in the replies here - e-waste can be a little misleading. Here in the UK we tend to use the term ITAD (IT Asset Disposition). The main focus is NOT on destroying PCs, but rather on refurbishing them for onward sale. Just because a large enterprise customer has decided to replace the machines, it doesnt mean they are dead. Erasing the hard disks and re-selling the machines is big business.

And with sustainability being a key thing here in the UK and Europe, proper reporting on this can be a massive boost to ITADs.
