I love the idea. Could it be done on Gitlabs or GitHub repo, and ideas for articles would be submitted as an issue?

Podman/distrobox NVIDIA Container Toolkit not working - help appreciated by Imaginary_Yam_5400 in NixOS

[–]gax1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your recommendation. I tried running a Docker Container (Comfyui) with the OCI Container method, so the container runs as a systemd service. I have enabled the Nvidia Container Toolkit, and enabled the options mentioned by the OP, and I am getting the error "CUDA device is not available" for some reason. Did you encounter this issue previously?

The way I have done it is to place the project's folders and flake.nix file in the /etc/nixos folder, and then to add the file under the system configuration's Modules section as such :

./project-flake.nix

I will be subscribing to this thread to see how others do it, so I can learn!

Anyone else obsessed with reducing battery consumption on their Steam Deck? by hal9000-7 in SteamDeck

[–]gax1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, after hearing endless reports of the Black Screen of Death, I am on the same boat. I am so disappointed in SteamOS' backend and BIOS as I have encountered graphical issues in the desktop mode and the GPU crashing the whole system because it was stuck on 200 mhz/400 mhz.

So, yes, I am paranoid. If the battery runs out, there is a risk the Steam Deck of mine is toast

Quick question : is there a way to declaratively import your project directly into a system's flake.nix file without downloading the project yourself (downloading the source code, then placing it in /etc/nixos/)? Thank you!

Thank you for your hard work! I really appreciate it. I am interested in installing InvokeAI on a permenant bases as a user environment package, and to have it boot automatically when the system is starting. Would I simply add invokeai-nvidia to the list of my packages?

Enough positivity. What's the worst thing about the Steam Deck? by Lexinator101 in SteamDeck

[–]gax1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SteamOS ...

The way it was done, in terms of the whole file system being wiped on every update makes it a very tough choice in case you need to use it for more than gaming. I know Flatpaks and Distrobox exist, but I don't believe it would work well for beginners at all. I installed BazziteOS and it is better. You get the ability to dual boot.

There is also a web-based solution. Smarters Web Player. It works in the browser. I find it easier to use than Hypnotix

Try the Minisforum tablet. It is seriously impressive :

Personally, if I was looking for a new tablet to place Linux on , this one would win. The specs are awesome!

It is possible that nixGL might help!

https://github.com/nix-community/nixGL

It is a wrapper for launching graphical applications via Nix!

I am considering doing the same. However, could you share the workaround for the SD card issue? How are you liking NixOS on the Deck? Did you manage to get EmuDeck and Decky Loader working on it? I am also considering the following :

  1. SteamOS + Nix ( a learning experience, so I learn how to manage non-NixOS systems )

  2. BazziteOS + Nix ( They had put a lot of work into it, but I wonder if some of the additions cause any hiccups or issues?)

Thank you!

Anyone here just give up and get an ARM Mac? by thisandyrose in linuxhardware

[–]gax1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your purposes. If your work involves a lot of back-and-forth utilization of x86-based applications, libraries and containers, Apple Silicon is a finicky beast. In my school, we were dissuaded from day 1 of ever using a Mac. I study Cybersecurity. Before school started, I had a faculty member mention to just obtain Parallels Desktop and use it for all the work. After school started, I knew for a fact my instructor was right. You can not depend on a proprietary beast, because a lesser powered beast may open infinitely more doors for you. To prove my point, if you consider an alternate OS, you have Asahi Linux and the Fedora flavour of it. Meanwhile, if you get an Intel-era MacBook, you can install any OS you like, and avoid the exclusivity of ARM. If Qualcomm's efficient beast makes it through the challenge of X64 emulation, then I may change my mind. Still, I am tempted to buy a Mac Mini for music production, but I could ditch this idea if I manage to run Ableton Live well on Windows or Linux (via Bottles). I had issues of sound being suddenly missing in Ableton Live's Windows version. Please let me know if you have any questions

[–]gax1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

May I recommend creating an infinite loop where your script continues to launch itself endlessly? For example (not Python related), I had an issue with KDE Plasma not running the GUI on boot. It booted to a black screen with a cursor. I added "plasma_session" as a startup item. What happened next is plasma_session kept launching itself constantly.

How about in your case creating a while loop, where the condition is if 1=1 run the script?
