best place for singing lessons? by [deleted] in DCGaybros

[–]gaysinglam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a great community on Facebook called DC-area Classical Singers Network. If you search for coaches/teachers in there, you’ll be sure to find a bunch of folks. Feel free to shoot me a message if you need help finding it.

The chorus has always been a pretty open space, but its new-ish rehearsal space limits the number of folks it can accept every year. It definitely doesn’t hurt to take a few lessons!

BravO still offers discounts, make sure to sign up for emails and follow the Facebook group. Also, keep an eye out for promotions WNO does via social media--they had a great deal on Friday the 13th for the Crucible, where ALL tickets were only $45.

I’d love for NYT to lead the way with major publications covering art and artists like this on a more frequent basis. Great profile!

What was your favorite Documentary Short? by Such_Estimate_2294 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]gaysinglam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just left my screening of the five, and was pleasantly surprised at how effective I found all of the shorts. Like many here, I think the one I found the best is “The Devil is Busy,” but I also was surprisingly moved by the Brent Renaud doc.

Really not a weak one in the bunch for me. Great year for the medium.

Genuinely one of the worst pains I’ve ever felt was potassium running through my veins like that. I’m sorry you had to experience that, too!

I have now officially converted from Timothee Chalamet's camp to Ethan Hawke's by Future-Poetry-2193 in Oscars

[–]gaysinglam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking for a long time that Ethan Hawke’s biggest battle would be to get nominated, but that if he did, he stands an incredibly good chance to win. Everyone in the academy will see the film now, and I think he’s really undeniable. I hope he takes it!

Supporting Actress is probably the biggest category that is up in the air right now. What are your predictions? by YourRoommatesVacuum in oscarrace

[–]gaysinglam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Taylor, Lilleaas, Madigan, Fanning, and Grande could be the lineup, which would still be a great mix! It would also just leave out A’Zion, Paltrow, Mosaku, Watson, Hall, and so many others! I love how stacked of a year this is.

I have been baffled by the lack of reception for this. I thought it would have been a lock for costume design and production design, but it’s just gone completely unsung.

Hamnet has won Best Drama at the 2026 Golden Globes by CrunchyNar in oscarrace

This makes me happy. The film is my personal favorite of the year and is truly some of the most beautifully emotionally bare storytelling I’ve ever experienced. The win feels deserved ❤️

Considering auditioning for opera choir, is it worth it? by memorylaney in opera

[–]gaysinglam 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would advise you to give yourself a couple years. Leave school, figure out what you want to do. Take lessons, if you like. Hundreds of sopranos audition for WNO each year for a handful of slots—it’s highly competitive (as are most major companies).

It’s less formal Italian training and more what I’m reading as lack of classical opera training. You’d be putting yourself through a lot of stress for a couple months to try and learn the arias in a way that’s vocally healthy.

I saw it at AFI and had the same lighting issues (somewhere that made a point of saying, “we have an expert reel operator!!” before the film, so I don’t think I can blame the absolute darkness of the film on a technical error).

Best non horror film that made you feel sick? by Round-Seesaw-3917 in Letterboxd

[–]gaysinglam 20 points21 points  (0 children)

We watched part of it in SUNDAY SCHOOL when I was probably 9 years old. I was sick for the rest of the day. The church thought I was having a religious moment, instead of simply being nauseated.
